Abstract

The feeding behavior of gypsy moth larvae exposed to two pesticide deposits (Bt and carbaryl) on oak leaf disks was monitored to determine the relationships between its efficacy and application parameters (droplet density and pesticide concentration). A range of pesticide concentrations and droplet densities (from 9 to 149 droplets/cm2) was used to simulate high and low application rates produced by different methods of application in the field.

The LD50 and the LC50, appeared to be affected by the spatial distribution of the deposit on the leaf surface. Both Bt and carbaryl showed a decreasing LD50 at increasing time after spray. The LD50 of Bt decreased from 14.1 BIU/liter to 3.1 BIU/Iiter between 48 and 144 hours after spray. The results show that feeding inhibition by Bt is more closely related to concentration than to droplet density and dose per unit area with the highest feeding inhibition occurring at 10 BIU/liter at 9 droplets/cm2. With carbaryl, an increase in both concentration and droplet density was necessary to cause a decrease in leaf area eaten by larvae.  相似文献

A correct characterization of the status and trend of forest condition is essential to support reporting processes at national and international level. An international forest condition monitoring has been implemented in Europe since 1987 under the auspices of the International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests). The monitoring is based on harmonized methodologies, with individual countries being responsible for its implementation. Due to inconsistencies and problems in sampling design, however, the ICP Forests network is not able to produce reliable quantitative estimates of forest condition at European and sometimes at country level. This paper proposes (1) a set of requirements for status and change assessment and (2) a harmonized sampling strategy able to provide unbiased and consistent estimators of forest condition parameters and of their changes at both country and European level. Under the assumption that a common definition of forest holds among European countries, monitoring objectives, parameters of concern and accuracy indexes are stated. On the basis of fixed-area plot sampling performed independently in each country, an unbiased and consistent estimator of forest defoliation indexes is obtained at both country and European level, together with conservative estimators of their sampling variance and power in the detection of changes. The strategy adopts a probabilistic sampling scheme based on fixed-area plots selected by means of systematic or stratified schemes. Operative guidelines for its application are provided.  相似文献

Anthraquinone-2-sulphonate (AQ2S) under UVA irradiation is able to oxidise nitrite to (·)NO(2) and to induce the nitration of phenol. The process involves the very fast reactions of the excited triplet state (3)AQ2S(*) and its 520-nm absorbing exciplex with water, at different time scales (ns and μs, respectively). Quinones are ubiquitous components of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in surface waters and AQ2S was adopted here as a proxy of CDOM. Using a recently developed model of surface-water photochemistry, we found that the oxidation of nitrite to (·)NO(2) by (3)CDOM(*) could be an important (·)NO(2) source in water bodies with high [NO(2)(-)] to [NO(3)(-)] ratio, for elevated values of column depth and NPOC.  相似文献

The increasing use of freshwater/sediment microcosms in geochemical and ecotoxicological studies requires additional efforts to characterize and understand their functioning and the main parameters that can influence the pollutants' behavior and bioavailability inside the microcosms themselves. In this study, we investigated the geochemical behavior of four elements (Cr(III), Cu, Cd, and Pb) in microcosms containing one type of natural water and sediment. The microcosms were operated under flow-through conditions with continuous metal spiking (2.5-40 μgL(-1) for Cr(III) and Pb; 1.25-20 μgL(-1) for Cu and Cd) over a period of 1 month. During this period, metal concentrations and partitioning between colloidal and truly dissolved phases in the microcosm water columns showed very little variability indicating that the system rapidly reached and maintained a steady state. Metal concentrations in pore waters also showed little variability, while Cd, Cr, and Pb levels in the top layer of sediments increased linearly from day 0 to day 28 (no significant variations in sedimentary Cu levels were observed). These features make this type of microcosms particularly suitable for ecotoxicological studies with zooplanktonic or epibenthic organisms. Characterizing the geochemical properties of microcosms provides critical information for properly interpreting microcosms-based ecotoxicity data and for reducing uncertainty in laboratory-to-field extrapolation.  相似文献

Based on available literature data of [NO2 ], steady-state [·OH], and ·OH generation rate upon nitrate photolysis in environmental aqueous samples under sunlight, the steady-state [·NO2], could be calculated. Interestingly, one to two orders of magnitude more ·NO2 would be formed in photochemical processes in atmospheric water droplets compared to transfer from the gas phase. The relative importance of nitrite oxidation compared to nitrate photolysis as an ·NO2 source would be higher in atmospheric than in surface waters. The calculated levels of ·NO2 could lead to substantial transformation of phenol into nitrophenols in both atmospheric and surface waters.  相似文献

The present work investigates electricity production using a high efficiency electrochemical generator that employs as fuel a biogas from the dry anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW).The as-produced biogas contains several contaminants (sulfur, halogen, organic silicon and aromatic compounds) that can be harmful for the fuel cell: these were monitored via an innovative mass spectrometry technique that enables for in-line and real-time quantification.A cleaning trap with activated carbons for the removal of sulfur and other VOCs contained in the biogas was also tested and monitored by observing the different breakthrough times of studied contaminants.The electrochemical generator was a commercial Ni anode-supported planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC), tested for more than 300 h with a simulated biogas mixture (CH4 60 vol.%, CO2 40 vol.%), directly fed to the anode electrode. Air was added to promote the direct internal conversion of CH4 to H2 and CO via partial oxidation (POx).The initial breakthrough of H2S from the cleaning section was also simulated and tested by adding ~1 ppm(v) of sulfur in the anode feed; a full recovery of the fuel cell performance after 24 h of sulfur exposure (~1 ppm(v)) was observed upon its removal, indicating the reliable time of anode exposure to sulfur in case of exhausted guard bed.  相似文献
