Several recent hypotheses, including sensory drive and sensory exploitation, suggest that receiver biases may drive selection of biological signals in the context of sexual selection. Here we suggest that a similar mechanism may have led to convergence of patterns in flowers, stingless bee nest entrances, and pitchers of insectivorous plants. A survey of these non-related visual stimuli shows that they share features such as stripes, dark centre, and peripheral dots. Next, we experimentally show that in stingless bees the close-up approach to a flower is guided by dark centre preference. Moreover, in the approach towards their nest entrance, they have a spontaneous preference for entrance patterns containing a dark centre and disrupted ornamentation. Together with existing empirical evidence on the honeybee's and other insects’ orientation to flowers, this suggests that the signal receivers of the natural patterns we examined, mainly Hymenoptera, have spontaneous preferences for radiating stripes, dark centres, and peripheral dots. These receiver biases may have evolved in other behavioural contexts in the ancestors of Hymenoptera, but our findings suggest that they have triggered the convergent evolution of visual stimuli in floral guides, stingless bee nest entrances, and insectivorous pitchers.  相似文献

We investigated the phylogenetic relationships among different size groups of the pelagic microcopepod Oncaea venusta Philippi, 1843, by comparing the patterns of genetic variation of specimens collected at five locations of the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic analyses were based on sequence data obtained from two DNA markers: A 310 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene and a 480 bp fragment of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1). The cyt b sequences showed a much higher level of variation than those from ITS1, but the conclusion from both genes was concordant. Four genetic clades could be differentiated. A small- and a large-size group were unambiguously assigned to two distinct clades or lineages. Unexpectedly, the medium-sized individuals could be divided into another two different genetic clades. All four lineages were supported by high bootstrap values. The high levels of sequence divergence under sympatric conditions indicated that at least the two main groups, the large and the small one, may be assigned to different species. For the medium-size group additional morphological studies and more sensitive nuclear markers are required to clarify their taxonomic status.  相似文献

Training research is often criticized for being atheoretical. Further, the research has typically ignored the role of the trainer. We present a model that applies attribution theory to the training process with a focus on the attributions that trainers make for trainee behavior and their implications for training effectiveness. The impact of trainees own attributions is also discussed. The model indicates how characteristics of both trainers and trainees can influence the attributional processes. In the Adayar riverbed and its estuary 5 undisturbed sediment cores were drilled using a petrol-driven hammer. Cores of a depth of 4-5 m were sampled in 0.5 m steps. The distribution of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the top layers of fluvial and estuarine sediments indicates recent anthropogenic input: Revealing that the river acts as a sink for drainage from the residential and industrial zones. In this study, the mobilization of heavy metals into greater depths and their probable effects on the groundwater body are discussed. The high concentration of heavy metals and the influent character of the river Adayar allow the mobilization of metal ions and their transport into the deeper layers of the sediment. A changing environment due to effects such as saltwater intrusion and monsoon floods is the driving force for this phenomenon.  相似文献

Biphenyl degrading bacteria (40 strains) have been isolated along a gradient of chlorobenzene pollution from an aquifer which did not contain any PCB to answer the question of how metabolic/catabolic abilities exist in ecosystems that have not been stressed with the relevant substrates is important for intrinsic bioremediations. Only few of the isolates were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses as Pseudomonas species while the majority were Gram-positive, belonging to the order Actinomycetales and representing the genera Rhodococcus and Arthrobacter. The strains could grow on a variety of chlorobenzoates but no pattern of substrate usage and phylogeny or pollution gradient could be found. Strains which were able to grow on 2,5-dichlorobenzoate were often also able to use 3,4- and 3,5-dichloro- and 2,3,5-trichlorobenzoate or those using 2-chlorobenzoate could usually use 2,6-dichlorobenzoate as well. From that results, it is concluded that a highly diverse, basic metabolic activity for PCB degradation existed at this site despite the absence of PCB.  相似文献

Sediments from an arsenic(As) contaminated groundwater vent site were used to investigate As( Ⅲ) binding, transformation and redistribution in native and iron oxide amended lake sediments using aging spiked batch reactions and a sequential extraction procedure that maintains As(V) and As( Ⅲ) speciation. In the native sediments, fractionation analysis revealed that 10% of the spiked As( Ⅲ) remained intact after a 32-day aging experiment and was predominantly adsorbed to the strongly sorbed(NH_4H_2PO_4 extractable) and amorphous Fe oxide bound(H_3PO_4 extractable) fractions. Kinetic modelling of the experimental results allowed identifying the dominant reaction path for depletion of dissolved As( Ⅲ) to As( Ⅲ)absorbed on to the solid phase, followed by oxidation in the solid phase. Arsenite was initially adsorbed primarily to the easily exchangeable fraction((NH_4)_2SO_4 extractable), then rapidly transformed into As(V) and redistributed to the strongly sorbed and amorphous Fe oxide bound fractions. Oxidation of As( Ⅲ) in recalcitrant fractions was less efficient. The iron oxide amendments illustrated the controls that iron oxides can have on As( Ⅲ) binding and transformation rates. In goethite amended samples As( Ⅲ) oxidation was faster and primarily occurred in the strongly sorbed and amorphous Fe oxide bound fractions. In these samples,19.3 μg Mn was redistributed(compared to the native sediment) from the easily exchangeable and crystalline Fe oxide bound fractions to the strongly sorbed and amorphous Fe oxide bound fractions, indicating that goethite may act as a catalyst for Mn(Ⅱ) oxidation, thereby producing sorbed Mn( Ⅲ/Ⅳ ), which then appears to be involved in rapidly oxidizing As( Ⅲ).  相似文献
