Destruction of PAHS from soil by using pressurized hot water extraction coupled with supercritical water oxidation

Chemical processes utilizing water both as extraction solvent and reaction medium are promising "Green Chemistry" alternatives to conventional techniques. Equipment for on-line coupled hot water extraction and supercritical water oxidation was constructed to extract polyaromatic hydrocarbons and toluene from sea sand followed by oxidation using hydrogen peroxide. The effectiveness of the technique is based on the physico-chemical properties of heated and pressurized water. Extraction efficiency increased with temperature and time; the best results were obtained at 300 degrees C with 40 min extraction time. In the oxidation stage, conversion of the PAHs increased with reaction time and oxidant concentration and the best conversion (97.0-99.9%, depending on the compound) was obtained at 425 degrees C with 43 s reaction time. Benzaldehyde and benzoic acid were the most abundant reaction intermediates in the oxidation process. In addition, phenol, p-cresol, and benzyl alcohol were found as intermediates. The intermediates originated mainly from toluene, which was present in much greater concentration than PAHs in the reaction medium.     

The material resources for the iron and steel industries

The future supplies of iron ore, coking coal and ferrous scrap are discussed. There is no likelihood of the resources of iron ore being exhausted until well into the twenty-first century. Coking coal, on the other hand, is in shorter supply but it is being eked out by blending with non-coking coal and by making blast furnaces more efficient. Briquettes made completely from non-coking coal will play a part in iron making in the future. To ensure greater flexibility in steel making, hydrocarbons are being considered as possible substitutes for coal. Scrap has always played an important part in steel making and the amount recycled is increasing every year. But more effort is needed, for example, to ensure that the steel in car scrap is fully utilised and that refuse is efficiently recycled. Steel making increasingly demands the scrap to have few impurities and to be in uniform sized pieces. A cryogenic method of preparing such scrap is described. A futuristic way of extracting iron, non-ferrous metals and other saleeable by-products from refuse, by using redundant blast furnaces, is also discussed.     

Prenatal diagnosis of thalidomide syndrome

A case of thalidomide syndrome diagnosed by ultrasound in the 17th week of pregnancy is presented. The pregnant woman had leprosy and received adjuvant treatment with thalidomide. The affected fetus was exposed to the drug until the 35th day of pregnancy and presented absent external ears, upper limb phocomelia and absent tibiae and fibulae. No internal organ abnormalities were noticed at autopsy.
