An open-top chamber study was conducted to investigate the tissue and cellular-level foliar effects of ozone (O3) on a Mediterranean evergreen species, the mastic plant (Pistacia lentiscus L.). Plants were exposed at three different O3 levels, and leaf samples were collected periodically from the beginning of the exposure. Although no visible foliar injury was evident, alterations of the plastids and vacuoles in the mesophyll were observed. Senescence processes were accelerated with an anomalous stacking of tannin vacuoles, and a reduction in the size and number of the chloroplasts. Overall, most of the modifications induced by O3 were consistent with previously reported observations on deciduous broadleaf species, with the exception of alterations in the cells covering the secretory channels, reported here as a new finding. Comments on the feasibility of using microscopy to validate O3 related field observations and subtle foliar injury are also given.  相似文献

Abstract

This study aims to establish the relationship between the consumption of certain foods and the presence of organochlorine pesticides in human milk. A total of 167 samples of breastmilk were collected. Sample analysis was carried out by gas chromatography with electron capture detector. Pesticide concentrations (op’DDT, pp’DDT, pp’DDE, Σ-DDT, HCB, β-HCH) were grouped by consumption level of fish, dairy products, meat, eggs, and seafood and then were compared to each other. The odds ratio (OR) was calculated between the concentration of pesticides (higher and/or lower than median) and the exposure variable (high consumption). The results indicated low median concentrations of HCB, β???HCH, op’DDT and pp’DDT, whose fluctuations and trends between different frequencies of food consumption were not significant. pp’DDE and Σ???DDT values according to the increase in consumption of fish were significantly increased. Women with high fish consumption have a higher risk of high concentrations of pp’DDE and Σ-DDT (OR: high consumption: 5.6 (1.3–23.6). A protective effect was observed in the consumption of dairy products (β-HCH and op’DDT), meat (HCB), and seafood (pp’DDT). These results suggest that it is possible that the consumption of fish, dairy products, meat, and seafood influences the presence of organochlorine pesticides in the studied population.  相似文献

Chemical oxidation of wastewater from molasses fermentation with ozone   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
Color removal from biologically pre-treated molasses wastewater by means of chemical oxidation with ozone has been investigated. Batch experiments have been performed in order to analyze the influence of ozone dosage and reaction time on color removal, molecular weight distribution and decolorization kinetics. Depending on the applied ozone dosage, color removal from 71% to 93% and COD reduction from 15% to 25% were reached after 30 min reaction time. TOC values remained constant throughout ozonation. Gel permeation chromatography corroborated that high molecular weight compounds, responsible for the brown color, were present in raw wastewater. UV spectral studies confirmed that these colored compounds were melanoidins. As a result of ozonation the concentration of chromophore groups decreased. Ozonation of synthetic melanoidin under the same experimental conditions provided similar color removal efficiencies. Pseudo-first order kinetics with respect to colored compounds were found.  相似文献

Biomonitoring organophosphate (OP) exposure in marine environments is generally achieved by the measurement of acetylcholinesterase activity in bivalves like mussels. However, there is evidence that indicates that oxidative stress may be implied in OP toxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between survival from the OP insecticide fenitrothion and glutathione levels in marine bivalves. Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam.) and scallops (Flexopecten flexuosus Poli) were exposed, in a time to death test, to their LC85 of fenitrothion for 96 h. OP-poisoned mussels showed reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) glutathione depletion in the digestive gland, muscle and gills. Pectinid spats exposed to this insecticide presented GSH depletion in the digestive gland and mantle, and a reduction of the GSH/GSSG ratio in gills and mantle. Although survival curves were significantly different and mussels withstood twice as much fenitrothion as pectinid spats, muscular GSH/GSSG ratio was highly related to mortality in both species. We suggest that an impairment in the glutathione redox status could result in an induction of the cell death, either by apoptosis or necrosis, leading ultimately to the death of the organism. We conclude that whereas glutathione depletion can be used as a biomarker of exposure, the muscular GSH/GSSG ratio might be used as a biochemical marker of effect and individual susceptibility to mortality of marine bivalves exposed to fenitrothion or other pollutants that induce oxidative stress.  相似文献

An improved dynamic coupled column liquid chromatographic (DCCLC) technique for determining water solubility data of hydrophobic compounds is presented. The technique is based on pumping water through a thermostated generator column in order to generate emulsion-free, saturated aqueous solutions of the compound under study. Through a switching valve system the solute in the aqueous solution is extracted and concentrated by an on-line solid-phase extraction process and subsequently eluted and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (fluorescence detection coupled to photodiode array detection). The improvements carried out to the original DCCLC technique have given rise to savings in time for the experimental work and increased sensitivity during the detection and quantification stage. Applicability of the method for studying highly hydrophobic substances is demonstrated by determining water solubility of anthracene and pyrene in the temperature range of 8.9-49.9 and 8.5-32.2 degrees C, respectively. The measured water solubilities are in good agreement with the best available literature data. The method has also been applied to the determination of water solubility of m-terphenyl, 9, 10-dihydrophenanthrene and guaiazulene, in the temperature range of 4.8-49.9, 4.8-25.0, and 4.5-29.9 degrees C, respectively. The uncertainty in the Sw values determined in this work ranged from 0.7% to 4.6%. The experimental water solubility data, as a function of temperature, are fitted to the equation In Sw = A + B/T; where Sw and T are given in mole fraction and Kelvin, respectively.  相似文献

The main operating variables affecting ozonation efficiencies of wastewater from beet molasses alcoholic fermentation have been studied. Semibatch experiments have been performed in order to analyze the influence of pH, bicarbonate ion, temperature and stirring rate on color and organic matter removals. The efficiencies were similar regardless of the pH, which indicates that direct reactions of ozone with wastewater organics were predominant to radical reactions. Gel permeation chromatography confirmed the reduction in the concentration of organics absorbing light at 475 nm after ozonation. The elimination of bicarbonate ion, strong inhibitor of hydroxyl radical reactions, yielded an improvement in both color and COD reduction efficiencies. Acidification for removing bicarbonate ions produced a shift of colored compounds to smaller molecular weights. The highest efficiencies were achieved at 40 degrees C. Color and COD reductions at 40 degrees C were about 90% and 37%, respectively. In no case, the percentage of TOC removed was higher than 10-15%. Stirring rate had a slightly positive effect during the first stage of the ozonation showing that mass transfer played a role only during the initial reaction phase when direct attack of ozone molecules to aromatic/olefinic structures of colored substances was the predominant pathway.  相似文献

The extensive eastern boundary of Everglades National Park (ENP) in south Florida (USA) is subject to one of the most expensive and ambitious environmental restoration projects in history. Understanding and predicting the water quality interactions between the shallow aquifer and surface water is a key component in meeting current environmental regulations and fine-tuning ENP wetland restoration while still maintaining flood protection for the adjacent developed areas. Dynamic factor analysis (DFA), a recent technique for the study of multivariate non-stationary time-series, was applied to study fluctuations in groundwater quality in the area. More than two years of hydrological and water quality time series (rainfall; water table depth; and soil, ground and surface water concentrations of N-NO3-, N-NH4+, P-PO4(3-), Total P, F-and Cl-) from a small agricultural watershed adjacent to the ENP were selected for the study. The unexplained variability required for determining the concentration of each chemical in the 16 wells was greatly reduced by including in the analysis some of the observed time series as explanatory variables (rainfall, water table depth, and soil and canal water chemical concentration). DFA results showed that groundwater concentration of three of the agrochemical species studied (N-NO3-, P-PO4(3-)and Total P) were affected by the same explanatory variables (water table depth, enriched topsoil, and occurrence of a leaching rainfall event, in order of decreasing relative importance). This indicates that leaching by rainfall is the main mechanism explaining concentration peaks in groundwater. In the case of N-NH4+, in addition to leaching, groundwater concentration is governed by lateral exchange with canals. F-and Cl- are mainly affected by periods of dilution by rainfall recharge, and by exchange with the canals. The unstructured nature of the common trends found suggests that these are related to the complex spatially and temporally varying land use patterns in the watershed. The results indicate that peak concentrations of agrochemicals in groundwater could be reduced by improving fertilization practices (by splitting and modifying timing of applications) and by operating the regional canal system to maintain the water table low, especially during the rainy periods.  相似文献

In this paper we present what kind of human impacted changes can be found in dwarf birch (Betula nana) dominated shrub tundra vegetation around the large industrial complex of Vorkuta in the north-European Russian tundra. Using fieldwork data and Landsat TM satellite image we could identify two impact zones: (1) Pollution zone (150-200 km2). In this zone most of the lichen species are absent. Changes in vegetation communities' species composition in all main plant groups are obvious. Willows especially are more dominant than in the unpolluted sites. (2) Slight pollution/disturbance zone (600-900 km2). Here vegetation changes are mainly similar but less so than the changes in the first zone. Particularly, the amount of herbs and grasses is increased when compared to unpolluted areas. The pollution zones are spatially connected to the main emission sources in the area. Zones spread furthest to the northeast, matching the prevailing winds during winter.  相似文献

A study was conducted of the viability of using the cationic exchange resins Amberlite IR-120 and Lewatit SP-112 to treat rinse water generated in the galvanizing process as well as acidic wastewater containing zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Solutions containing either 100 mg/L of Zn at pH 5.6 (rinse water) or Fe and Zn at concentrations of 320 and 200 mg/L at pH 1.5 (acidic water), respectively, were percolated through packed beds until the resins were exhausted. Breakthrough capacities obtained ranged between 1.1 and 1.5 meq metal/mL resin. The elution of metal and the regeneration of resins were performed with hydrochloric acid. The influence of the flowrate used during the loading stage was also studied, with 0.5 bed volumes/min (3.2 cm/min) found to be the optimum flowrate.  相似文献

Using an air quality model, two future urban scenarios induced by the construction of the new international airport for Mexico City are compared at a regional level. The air quality model couples the meteorology model MM5 and state-of-the-art photochemistry. The air quality comparison is made using metrics for the criterion gases selected for the study. From the two urban scenarios compared, the option for Tizayuca is moderately better than the option for Texcoco, because relative reductions in O3 and other photochemical pollutants are achieved over highly populated areas. Regardless of the site, the air quality for the central region of Mexico in the future will deteriorate. In the region of central Mexico, SO2 and NO2 will become important pollutants.  相似文献
