Resources to develop proactive environmental programs compete directly with resources dedicated to the fundamental business of the company. Therefore, environmental managers need to prioritize environmental programs using the same criteria as the company as a whole; for many companies, this means measuring how well such programs meet and exceed customer expectations. We must define our customers, measure their expectations, analyze the results, develop programs in response, and finally measure the results of the program implementation. Although Apple has not completed this cycle, our customer definition and measurement systems are taking shape. This article explains how we define our customers, and how we measure their expectations through direct and indirect data collection mechanisms. Taxonomic composition, biomass as organic carbon, numerical abundance, and size distribution of the microplankton were determined at 6 Southern California nearshore locations in late May–early June, 1970. Samples were taken at approximately 5 m (10 m at one station) intervals through the upper 40 to 50 m to reveal some of the small-scale differences and levels of variability in the populations. Total microplankton biomass over all euphotic zone samples varied by more than two orders of magnitude (7.6 to 1,200 g C l-1). Average biomass at comparable sites (n=5) ranged from 48 to 240 g C l-1; biomass range within stations varied from about 5-fold to 120-fold. Total microplankton numbers varied approximately 22-fold (4.3×105 to 9.5×106 organisms l-1) over all euphotic zone samples, but the range within stations was always less than an order of magnitude. At comparable stations, nanoplankton biomass had ranges extending from 3.7-fold to 12-fold; its average percentage contribution (±1 SD) to the total microplankton biomass varied from 39±5% to 54±13%. Netplankton biomass showed a similar minimal range, but its greatest range was more than two orders of magnitude. Ranges of abundance of major taxonomic groups within stations varied considerably from about 2-fold to more than three orders of magnitude. Electron micrograph examination of the leaf and stem surfaces of Cleome viscosa L (Family Capparaceae) revealed the presence of secretory glandular trichomes with club-cylinder and cylinder morphologies. In the present study, the leaves and stems of C. viscosa were extracted with hexane and the extract was evaluated for the following biological activities: anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, contact insecticidal and nematicidal. The extract was found to be a potent anti-bacterial agent according to the thin layer chromatography autobiographic assay. Activity-directed isolation studies of the anti-bacterially active compounds led to a 14-member ring cembranoid diterpene being identified as one of the effective agents. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values (µg/spot) of 5.0 µg/spot and 1.0 µg/spot were found for the diterpene on Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (Gram-negative), respectively. The diterpene did not inhibit the growth of the fungus Cladosporium cucumerinum. The extract demonstrated a pyrethroid type of contact insecticidal activity on adult Cylas formicarius elegantulus Summer (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The extract also had high nematicidal activity with a percentage Abbott's value of 72.69 on the plant parasitic nematode Meloidogyne incognita Chitwood; however, the extract lost its potency upon subfractionation. 相似文献

A significant number of all organic chemicals that are released into the environment are racemic mixtures. Most environmental regulations and scientific environmental studies treat racemic mixtures as though they were single, pure compounds. This can lead to incorrect toxicological, distribution, degradation and other data. A series of new enantioselective chromatographic techniques have been developed that allow the facile separation and quantitation of chiral compounds of environmental importance. Nineteen racemic compounds that have been or currently are being released to the environment are resolved. These include: rodenticides--Warfarin, Coumachlor and Coumafuryl; insecticides--Crufomate, Bulan, Fonofos, Mitotane; insect repellent--Ethohexadiol; herbicides and fungicides--Ancymidol, Silvex, Napropamide, phenyl mercuric lactate, 2-[3-chlorophenoxy]propionamide, and 2-chloropropionic acid; and halocarbons-1,2-dichloropropane, 2-bromo-1-chloropropane, 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane, 2,3-dichlorobutane and alpha-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane. Several examples are given to illustrate the importance of enantioselective measurements of these and other compounds. The interannual variations in abundance of the calanoid copepod Centropages typicus (Krøyer) in the North Sea are significantly positively correlated with sea-surface temperature. The same is true of Calanus helgolandicus Claus. In both cases there was a deviation from the close relationship with temperature for several years in the early to mid-1980s. Centropages typicus was less abundant than expected from 1981 to 1984, but Calanus helgolandicus recovered from a period of lower than expected abundance from 1980 to 1982, to become more abundant than expected from 1983 to 1987. The difference between the responses of the two species to climate-driven changes in seasonal cycles of phytoplankton is interpreted in relation to their biology. Geographical variations of the interannual variability and seasonal cycles of Centropages typicus in the North Sea are analysed. The centre of the population of this species in the North Sea is in the German and Southern Bights, but the variations in abundance may be partly influenced by advection from areas to the west of Britain. 相似文献

The distribution and diet of juvenile (<750 mm) Patagonian toothfish are described from four annual trawl surveys (2003–2006)
around the island of South Georgia in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Recruitment of toothfish varies inter-annually,
and a single large cohort dominated during the four years surveyed. Most juveniles were caught on the Shag Rocks shelf to
the NW of South Georgia, with fish subsequently dispersing to deeper water around both the South Georgia and Shag Rocks shelves.
Mean size of juvenile toothfish increased with depth of capture. Stomach contents analysis was conducted on 795 fish that
contained food remains and revealed that juvenile toothfish are essentially piscivorous, with the diet dominated by notothenid
fish. The yellow-finned notothen, Patagonotothen guntheri, was the dominant prey at Shag Rocks whilst at South Georgia, where P. guntheri is absent, the dominant prey were Antarctic krill and notothenid fish. The diet changed with size, with an increase in myctophid
fish and krill as toothfish grow and disperse. The size of prey also increased with fish size, with a greater range of prey

The feasibility of using composted civic waste for the remediation of a soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (EPH) 10+/-1.8 g kg(-1) and total 16 USEPA PAH 1.62+/-0.5 g kg(-1)) was assessed. The effects of compost to soil ratio, in combination with and without earthworm presence (Dendrobaena veneta), upon the loss of contaminants were determined for EPH (GC-FID) and PAH (GC-MS), respectively. Increasing the ratio of compost substrate to hydrocarbon impacted soil (1:0.5, 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4 (soil:compost wt/wt)) in the absence of earthworms resulted in significantly (p<0.05) greater losses of both EPH and SigmaPAH after an 84 d incubation period, when compared to the soil only control. Where earthworms were present without compost, EPH losses were significantly (p<0.05) enhanced in the soil only treatment (33.4+/-5.3% residual) compared to the soil only control (54.4+/-5.3% residual). However, PAH loss in the soil only treatment (with-earthworm presence) were only slightly enhanced (65.3+/-9.3% residual), with respect to the soil only control (69.2+/-6.4% residual). Synergistic benefits of both earthworm and compost presence were most significant for PAHs (p<0.05), and less so for EPH. Chemical cues released by damaged or dead organisms can affect how and where benthic organisms feed. These cues may cause predators to act as opportunistic scavengers in lieu of their normal predatory role. A scavenger, as defined in this study, is an organism that consumes damaged and/or dead organisms. In-situ experiments were performed to determine how the seastar Pycnopodia helianthoides (Brandt) reacts in the presence of chemical cues from one of its prey species, the butter clam Saxidomus giganteus (Deshayes), using both intact and damaged individuals. The results of these experiments suggest that P. helianthoides use their chemosensory abilities to locate damaged/dead prey. The role of current in propagating chemical cues was paramount in this foraging activity. P. helianthoides chose damaged prey over live prey even when live prey was encountered en route to the damaged individual. This study suggests that chemical cues emitted from damaged or dead individuals may cause significant changes in foraging tactics of key predators, thus altering food-web dynamics.Communicated by J.P. Among both forest practitioners and the general public, “forest health” has become an issue of contention. Whereas the debate
over which treatments will best achieve healthy forests has been framed largely by the popular media and politicians as a
struggle between industry and environmentalists, the views of the general public remain unexplored. Survey results from Oregon
and Washington residents were used to assess the relationships between respondents’ self-described environmental or economic
priorities and the following two variables: (1) acceptability of forest management practices and (2) perceived threats to
forest health. Findings indicate that active management was generally accepted by a majority of respondents regardless of
their environmental or economic orientation. Disagreement emerged, however, when the appropriateness of specific management
practices within specific forest conditions was examined. Additionally, strong evidence was found for a relationship between
self-described environmental or economic orientation and perceived threats to forest health. Those with an environmentally
oriented viewpoint tended to perceive human-caused factors as the largest threats, whereas those with an economic orientation
saw naturally occurring processes as the greatest threats. These findings suggest that the issue of contention is not active
management per se. Rather, the major divisions in the forest health debate are defined by specific contexts and circumstances,
