Short-term exposure of plants to heavy metals is often used for risk assessment of metal-enriched soils (OECD guideline 208) without considering the reliability of the assessment for long-term exposure, i.e. for the completion of a plant's life-cycle. In the present study with 15 orogenic soils three phases of the life-cycle of a Zn-Cd-resistant ecotype of Silene vulgaris were studied to improve risk assessment of metal-enriched soils. The first phase, i.e. emergence of seedlings was not related to the water-soluble or total metal concentration of the soils. Seedling mortality was low as long as the water-soluble metal concentration did not surpass 0.15 micromol Zn and 0.04 micromol Cu g(-1) dry soil. Curtailment of the life-cycle prior to flowering, i.e. the vegetative growth as second phase, occurred on those soils where roots and shoots were heavily enriched by Zn already in the seedling phase. In the third phase, i.e. the generative phase, time to flowering and yield differences between orogenic soils were substantial, but soil metal concentrations could not be directly related to timing of reproduction or biomass. Ranking of data showed a high inconsistency of the responses to metal exposure during the first phases of the life-cycle. It is concluded that total plant mass and seed mass are the only realistic endpoints of life-cycle bioassays in risk assessment as long as ranks are inconsistent between two successive early phases of the life-cycle.  相似文献

Evaluation of twelve minesoils collected from restored or abandoned surface mines in eastern Kentucky with six standard lime requirement procedures showed that one of the procedures accurately forecasted long term lime requirements. The minesoils were then evaluated for potassium choloride-extractable aluminum using the Yang exchangeable acidity procedure. When the extractable A13+ was multiplied by a factor of 2.24 it was found to also be an accurate measure for longterm limestone requirements. To bring the minesoil to pH 5.5 the results obtained using the modified Yuan procedure indicate that for each MEQ Al3+ extracted per 100 grams of minesoil 2.24 Mg of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) equivalent lime per hectare be applied. Application of lime based on this procedure and one of the standard lime procedures resulted in pH stability of the minesoils for forty months.  相似文献

Nematodes belonging to the family Oncholaimidae are known to aggregate at sites of organic pollution. The oncholaimidAdoncholaimus thalassophygas (De Man, 1876), collected from the Weser Estuary, FRG, in 1989, has the capability to take up acetate at naturally occurring concentrations. Under almost axenic conditions, ca 2.3 to 3.0 ng sodium acetate was taken-up per worm within 24 h, when an ambient concentration of 0.33 mmol was offered. The concentration factor was ca 8.5 to 11.1. Perhaps the most common form of cooperation among primates is the formation of coalitions. Competition among males within a group concerns a constant quantity of the limiting resource (fertilizations). Contest competition over fertilizations is known to produce payoffs that are distributed according to the priority-of-access model, and hence show an exponential decline in payoff with rank. We develop a model for rank-changing, within-group coalitions among primate males. For these coalitions to occur, they must be both profitable (i.e. improve fitness) for all coalition members and feasible (i.e. be able to beat the targets). We assume that the value of the coalition is the sum of the payoffs of the partners in their original ranks. We distinguish three basic coalition configurations, depending on the dominance ranks of the coalition partners relative to their target. We predict five basic coalition types. First, all-up, rank-changing coalitions targeting individuals ranking above all coalition partners; these are expected to involve coalition partners ranking just below their target, concern top rank, and be small, just two or three animals. Second, bridging, rank-changing coalitions, where higher-rankers support lower-rankers to rise to a rank below themselves; these are expected to be most common where a high-ranking male in a despotic system can support a low-ranking relative. Third, bridging non-rank-changing coalitions; these are expected to be common whenever high-ranking males have low-ranking close relatives. Fourth, non-rank-changing coalitions by high-rankers against lower-ranking targets; these are expected to serve to counteract or prevent the first type. Fifth, non-rank-changing, leveling coalitions, in which all partners rank below their target and which flatten the payoff distribution; these are expected to be large and mainly involve lower-ranking males. Bridging, rank-changing coalitions are expected in situations where contest is strong, all-up rank-changing coalitions where contest is intermediate, and leveling coalitions where contest is weak. We review the empirical patterns found among primates. The strong predictions of the model are confirmed by observational data on male-male coalitions in primates.

The endotoxic principle of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) is localized in their lipid A component. Biological effects of LPS on, for instance, body temperature, blood pressure, and blood picture, are also induced by free lipid A. In contrast to the great variability of the 0-specific chains, the chemical structure of lipid A is much more constant. It is common for Salmonella and similar for other genera of the Enterobacteriaceae. Recently, a number of lipid A's have been recognized that exhibited distinct structural features compared with Enterobacteriaceae. Rapid karyotyping in the second and third trimesters has important implications for the management of pregnancies at risk. From September 1985 to March 1992, 735 amniotic fluid samples sent to our laboratory for rapid karyotyping from 64 different diagnostic centres of the Federal Republic of Germany were included in a comparative study on harvesting for chromosome analysis using the ‘pipette method’ or the ‘in situ’ technique. The average time between preparation of the amniotic fluid and verbal notification of the analysed karyotype was 5·41 days. The ‘pipette method’ needed on average 4·65 days, and the ‘in situ’ technique 5·97 days. In comparison with other more invasive techniques available for rapid karyotyping such as cordocentesis and placental biopsy, amniocentesis and subsequent chromosome harvesting using the ‘pipette method’ and/or the ‘in situ’ technique proved very useful and efficient. The overall incidence of chromosome aberrations was 15·3 per cent. The high rate of structural chromosome aberrations and uncommon aneuploidies found in our investigation (12 per cent) indicates that for rapid karyotyping in the second and third trimesters, conventional cytogenetic techniques cannot be replaced by faster techniques based on fluorescent in situ hybridization on interphase cells in the near future.  相似文献
