Vegetation fires may alter the quantity and quality of organic matter inputs to soil, rates of organic matter decay, and environmental factors that influence those processes. However, few studies have evaluated the impacts of this land management technique on soil organic carbon (SOC) and total N in grasslands and savannas. We evaluated the impact of repeated fires and their season of occurrence on SOC and total N storage in a temperate mixed-grass-mesquite savanna where fire is used to control woody plant encroachment. Four fire treatments varying in season of occurrence were examined: summer only (SF), winter only (WF), alternate summer and winter fires (SWF), and unburned controls. In each treatment, soils were sampled to 1 m under three vegetation types: C3 grasses, C4 grasses, and mesquite trees. The SOC storage at 0 to 20 cm was significantly greater in SF (2693 g C m(-2)) and SWF (2708 g C m(-2)) compared to WF (2446 g C m(-2)) and controls (2445 g C m(-2)). The SWF treatment also increased soil total N (271 g N m(-2)) relative to all other treatments (228-244 g N m(-2)) at 0 to 20 cm. Fire had no effect on SOC or total N at depths of > 20 cm. Vegetation type had no significant influence on SOC or total N stocks. The delta13C value of SOC was not affected by fire, but increased from -21 per thousand at 0 to 10 cm to -15 per thousand at depths of > 20 cm indicating that all treatments were once dominated by C4 grasses before woody plant encroachment during the past century. These results have implications for scientists, land managers, and policymakers who are now evaluating the potential for land uses to alter ecosystem C storage and influence atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global climate. 相似文献

Air Quality Improvement Estimation and Assessment Using Contingent Valuation Method, A Case Study in Beijing 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The aim of the paper is to estimate and assess residents' willingness to pay to improve air quality in the urban area of Beijing using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The mean willingness to pay (WTP) for a 50% reduction of harmful substances in the air was 143 CNY per household per year, and the total WTP of the residents in the study area was 336 million CNY per year. As a proportion of household annual income, the mean WTP amounted to 0.7%. Four socio-economic variables were found to have significant impacts on residents' willingness to pay. The analysis results illustrated that WTP increases with income and education level, and decreases with household population and age. The willingness was larger for residents in the urban districts than those in the suburban districts. It was found that most of the protest bids lay on interviewees' incomplete perception of the values of environmental amenity. The influence of household income on people's willingness to pay illustrated in this study reflects a causal force of Beijing's transition to market economy that households created to have disposable income are more likely to care about environmental quality. The results of this study strike an optimistic note on the possibility of measuring the total economic value of environmental quality improvement by using the CVM in China. Suggestions on implication of the CVM for both academics and policy makers are provided in the paper. 相似文献

Biodegradability enhancement of landfill leachate using air stripping followed by coagulation/ultrafiltration (UF) processes was introduced. The air stripping process obtained a removal efficiency of 88.6% for ammonia nitrogen (NH4–N) at air-to-liquid ratio of 3500 (pH 11) for stripping 18 h. The single coagulation process increased BOD/COD ratio by 0.089 with the FeCl3 dosage of 570 mg l?1 at pH 7.0, and the single UF process increased the BOD/COD ratio to 0.311 from 0.049. However, the combined process of coagulation/UF increased the BOD/COD ratio from 0.049 to 0.43, and the final biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4–N and colour of leachate were 1223.6 mg l?1, 2845.5 mg l?1, 145.1 mg l?1 and 2056.8, respectively, when 3 kDa molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) membrane was used at the operating pressure 0.7 MPa. Marinas and harbours provide ideal sites for the study of population genetics of marine invertebrates with restricted dispersal capabilities. They combine a confinement effect, particular ecological conditions (pollution, turbidity), and the possibility of high gene flow through ship-borne propagules, which greatly increases the natural dispersal capability of sexual and asexual propagules in many species with short-lived larvae. We studied the genetic structure of populations of the ascidian Clavelina lepadiformis living inside and outside harbours in the north-western Mediterranean. A 500-bp segment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) mitochondrial gene was sequenced in three populations from inside harbours (interior form) and in three populations from the rocky littoral (exterior form). Two congeneric Mediterranean species, Clavelina sp. and C. dellavallei, were used for comparison. We found that the interior and exterior forms of C. lepadiformis belong to two distinct clades, with a genetic divergence of 5%. Gene-flow values among these forms were insignificant. The lack of gene flow and the genetic divergence suggest that the interior and exterior forms of C. lepadiformis are in fact cryptic species rather than differentiated populations of the same species. Levels of gene flow were higher among interior habitats than among exterior habitats, a pattern likely maintained by genetic exchange through ships. We discuss the possible origins of the present-day distribution of these cryptic species. We contend that the study of species living both inside and outside these particular habitats will reveal more instances of genetic discontinuities allowing local adaptations. 相似文献

A series of Bi(3+)-doped TiO(2) (Bi(3+)-TiO(2)) catalysts with a doping concentration up to 2wt% were prepared by a sol-gel method. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by different means to determine their chemical composition, surface structure and light absorption properties. The photocatalytic activity of different Bi(3+)-TiO(2) catalysts was evaluated in the photocatalytic reduction of nitrate in aqueous solution under UV illumination. In the experiments, formic acid was used as a hole scavenger to enhance the photocatalytic reduction reaction. The experiments demonstrated that nitrate was effectively degraded in aqueous Bi(3+)-TiO(2) suspension by more than 83% within 150min, while the pH of the solution increased from 3.19 to 5.83 due to the consumption of formic acid. The experimental results indicate that the presence of Bi(3+) in TiO(2) catalysts substantially enhances the photocatalytic reaction of nitrate reduction. It was found that the optimal dosage of 1.5wt% Bi(3+) in TiO(2) achieved the fastest reaction of nitrate reduction under the experimental condition. Bismuth ions deposit on the TiO(2) surface behaves as sites where electrons accumulate. Better separation of electrons and holes on the modified TiO(2) surface allows more efficient channeling of the charge carriers into useful reduction and oxidation reactions rather than recombination reactions. Two intermediate products of nitrite and ammonia during the reaction were also monitored to explore the possible mechanisms of photoluminescence quenching and photocatalytic reduction in the context of donor-acceptor interaction with electron trapping centers. 相似文献

Blubber, liver and kidney samples of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) from the northern Gulf of Alaska were collected during 2000-2001 for the analysis of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (CoplPCBs). On the lipid weight (lw) base, the total concentrations of PCNs (Sigma PCNs) ranged from 0.3 to 27 ng/g lw, and the total concentrations of CoplPCBs (Sigma CoplPCBs) were 3.6-546 ng/g lw in all the tissue samples. Di-ortho PCBs and mono-ortho PCBs were dominant followed by non-ortho PCBs and PCNs. Sigma Mono-ortho PCBs and Sigma di-ortho PCBs in nursing seals were apparently lower than those in male adult seals, but Sigma PCNs and Sigma non-ortho PCBs in female adults were not significantly different from those in male adults. Differences in PCNs and CoplPCBs congener profiles in female and male adult seals are apparently related to their chemical structure and properties, animal's developmental stages and physiological conditions. A large quantity of mono-ortho and di-ortho PCBs might be transferred to newborns from the nursing seals during lactation, while non-ortho PCBs and PCNs were relatively accumulative in the mother seals. Sigma PCNs and Sigma CoplPCBs in the harbor seals correlated with ages, gender, body weight and blubber thickness, but the blubber Sigma PCNs and Sigma CoplPCBs in Kodiak Island and Southern Alaska Peninsula (KIAP) did not significantly differ from those in Prince William Sound (PWS). In addition to the new PCB data, this first report on PCN contamination in Alaskan harbor seal tissues is useful for the wildlife and ecosystem management and human health protection. 相似文献

An ambient air quality study was undertaken in two cities (Pamplona and Alsasua) of the Province of Navarre in northern Spain
from July 2001 to June 2004. The data were obtained from two urban monitoring sites. At both monitoring sites, ambient levels
of ozone, NOx, and SO2 were measured. Simultaneously with levels of PM10 measured at Alsasua (using a laser particle counter), PM10 levels were also determined at Pamplona (using a beta attenuation monitor). Mean annual PM10 concentrations in Pamplona and Alsasua reached 30 and 28 μg m−3, respectively. These concentrations are typical for urban background sites in Northern Spain. By using meteorological information
and back trajectories, it was found that the number of exceedances of the daily PM10 limit as well as the PM10 temporal variation was highly influenced by air masses from North Africa. Although North African transport was observed on
only 9% of the days, it contributed the highest observed PM10 levels. Transport from the Atlantic Ocean was observed on 68% of the days; transport from Europe on 13%; low transport and
local influences on 7%; and transport from the Mediterranean region on 3% of the days. The mean O3 concentrations were 45 and 55 μg m−3 in Pamplona and Alsasua, respectively, which were above the values reported for the main Spanish cities. The mean NO and
NO2 levels were very similar in both sites (12 and 26 μg m−3, respectively). Mean SO2 levels were 8 μg m−3 in Pamplona and 5 μg m−3 in Alsasua. Hourly levels of PM10, NO and NO2 showed similar variations with the typically two coincident maximums during traffic rush hours demonstrating a major anthropogenic

WO(3) and Zn-doped WO(3) thin films were prepared on indium-tin oxide glass by a dip-coating. The composite films were characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The effect of preparation conditions (concentration of Zn, annealing temperature, number of layers) on the photocurrent was studied. It was found that the photocurrent under visible light displayed the highest value for 2% Zn-WO(3) films annealed at 400 degrees C. The photocatalytic activity of the Zn-doped WO(3) was evaluated in terms of decay rate of nitrite ions under visible light. The influence of applied potential, initial pH and nitrite concentration on the reaction rate was studied. The experiments demonstrated that NO(2)(-) could be efficiently degraded on the doped photoanode that showed a higher activity than the undoped WO(3) especially under high anodic potential (>0.7 V). The rate of degradation was enhanced in aqueous NaCl solutions. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the photodegradation mechanism of NO(2)(-) proceeded mainly indirectly via OH radicals. The possible reason of enhancement of reaction rate was also discussed. 相似文献

Phenols are widely present in the atmosphere and nitration probably in the aerosol phase leads to nitrophenols. Nitration by nitric acid in sulfuric acid can be rapid, but little is known of the process under atmospheric conditions. The Henry's law constants K(H)(dagger) of phenol and 2-, 3- and 4-nitrophenol were all measured by a bubble stripping method as: 2820mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 298K), 147mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 298K), 1.6x10(4)mol kg(-1)atm(-1) (at 308K) and 2.1x10(4)mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 308K), respectively. The Henry's law constant of phenol in sulfuric acid systems is lower by more than a factor of two at 1020mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 298K) in 40wt% sulfuric acid, which is in line with salting-out of oxygen-containing aromatic compounds in water-sulfuric acid systems. The Henry's law constants of 2- and 4-nitrophenol behave differently and are almost independent of sulfuric acid concentration. The variation of K(H)(dagger) with temperature (T) described in terms of -dln(K(H)(dagger))/d(1/T) does not to vary with sulfuric acid concentration, suggesting enthalpy of dissolution for phenol is independent of sulfuric acid. The series of Henry's law constants measured here can describe the equilibrium situation for phenols in careful determinations of phase partitioning in the atmosphere. 相似文献
