An evaluation of the social organization and sexual system of eusocial species of Synalpheus has been hindered because it has not been possible to determine the sexual composition of colony helpers (workers). The external sexual characters typically used to sex caridean shrimps are lacking in Synalpheus. We used SEM sexing technique to determine the sexual composition of helpers in colonies of Synalpheus regalis, S. rathbunae, S. chacei, S. rathbunae A (see Morrison et al. Mol Phylogen Evol 30:563–568, 2004), and S. filidigitus. Colonies consisted of both sexes and sex ratios of helpers generally conformed to 50:50 female to male. Females were characterized by gonopores with U-shaped slits on the coxae of the third pereopods (first walking legs) while males had oval gonopore openings on the coxae of the fifth pereopods (third or last walking legs). In S. chacei, S. filidigitus, and S. rathbunae A, a few helpers were found that had both male and female gonopores (intersexes). All three reproductive females (queens) of S. filidigitus examined were intersexes. Sexing of helpers allowed us to test some hypotheses about sexual differences in helper morphology that might indicate task specialization (division of labor). Male helpers were not different from female ones in body size (except in S. regalis: males somewhat larger) and in fighting chela size. The lack of sexual dimorphism in these characters suggests no male–female specialization in colony tasks such as defense. The presence of male and female helpers similar in size suggests that the sexual system of these eusocial species is gonochoristic, although protandry of some sort in S. filidigitus can not be ruled out. The intersexuality observed in a few individuals may be due to developmental anomalies, protandry, or even simultaneous hermaphroditism. Finally, the sexing technique allowed us to establish that new colonizers of unoccupied sponges in S. rathbunae are a single male and female of helper size.  相似文献

Atmospheric monitoring data for selected polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were compiled from remote, rural and urban locations in the UK, Sweden, Finland and Arctic Canada. The objective was to examine the seasonal and temporal trends, to shed light on the factors which exert a dominant influence over ambient PAH levels. Urban centres in the UK have concentrations 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than in rural Europe and up to 3 orders of magnitude higher than Arctic Canada. Interpretation of the data suggests that proximity to primary sources 'drives' PAH air concentrations. Seasonality, with winter (W) > summer (S), was apparent for most compounds at most sites; high molecular weight compounds (e.g. benzo[a]pyrene) showed this most clearly and consistently. Some low molecular weight compounds (e.g. phenanthrene) sometimes displayed S>W seasonality at some rural locations. Strong W>S seasonality is linked to seasonally-dependent sources which are greater in winter. This implicates inefficient combustion processes, notably the diffusive domestic burning of wood and coal. However, sometimes seasonality can also be strongly influenced by broad changes in meteorology and air mass origin (e.g. in the Canadian Arctic). The datasets examined here suggest a downward trend for many PAHs at some sites, but this is not apparent for all sites and compounds. The inherent noise in ambient air monitoring data makes it difficult to derive unambiguous evidence of underlying declines, to confirm the effectiveness of international source reduction measures.  相似文献

A questionnaire-based tool for quantifying self-reported affective reactions to and behavioral disruptions by odorous/pungent substances, called the Chemical Sensitivity Scale (CSS), analogous to the Noise Sensitivity Scale (NSS), was evaluated regarding psychometric properties. Twenty-six members from the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association and 124 control participants responded to the CSS, the NSS, and to additional questions for evaluation of the validity of the CSS and NSS. The results showed that the CSS generates approximately normal distributions, has good test–retest reliability (rxy=0.87), good internal consistency (rα=0.88), and satisfying predictive and concurrent validity. These metric properties of the CSS and NSS were in general very similar. The content validity of the CSS is discussed. Two major dimensions of the CSS appear to represent sensory/somatic and neurasthenic symptoms, respectively. The analogy of the CSS to the NSS implies that use of both scales in combination may enhance understanding for the issue of general environmental sensitivity versus specific sensitivity to chemicals. Correlation coefficients between CSS and NSS scores for the asthma and allergy members (rxy=0.40) and controls (rxy=0.42) imply a moderate correspondence between chemical and noise sensitivity.  相似文献

The presence of Eriophorum angustifolium in mine tailings of pyrite maintains a neutral pH, despite weathering, thus lowering the release of toxic elements into acid mine drainage water. We investigated if the presence of slightly elevated levels of free toxic elements triggers the plant rhizosphere to change the pH towards neutral by increasing organic acid contents. Plants were treated with a combination of As, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn at different concentrations in nutrient medium and in soil in a rhizobox-like system for 48–120 h. The pH and organic acids were detected in the mucilage dissolved from root surface, reflecting the rhizospheric solution. Also the pH of root–cell apoplasm was investigated. Both apoplasmic and mucilage pH increased and the concentrations of organic acids enhanced in the mucilage with slightly elevated levels of toxic elements. When organic acids concentration was high, also the pH was high. Thus, efflux of organic acids from the roots of E. angustifolium may induce rhizosphere basification.  相似文献

Crop rotation long-term field experiments were established in 1955 and 1956 at three locations in the Czech Republic (?áslav, Ivanovice, and Lukavec) differing in their climatic and soil physicochemical properties. The effect of long-term application of farmyard manure and farmyard manure + NPK treatments on plant-available, easily mobilizable, potentially mobilizable, and pseudo-total contents of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) contents in soils (in 2013) as well as the uptake of these elements by winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain and straw were analyzed in the two following seasons: 2012 and 2013. The treatments resulted in increasing the soil pH level when compared to the control, but the cation exchange capacity remained unchanged. Although all fertilizers were applied for six decades, the pseudo-total concentration elements in both the soil and wheat plants stayed far below those of the Czech and European threshold limits for agricultural soils and cereals for human nutrition and feedstuff. Although the mobile pools of As, Cu, and Zn were slightly changed at the treated soils, these changes were not related to the element uptake by the wheat plants. Moreover, the effect of the location and growing season was more decisive for the differences in soil and plant element contents than for the individual treatments. Thus, the long-term application of farmyard manure did not result in any substantial change in risk element contents in both soils and winter wheat plants.  相似文献

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a large group of chemicals used in different industrial and commercial applications. Studies have suggested the potential of some PFCs to disrupt endocrine homeostasis, increasing the risk of adverse health effects. This study aimed to elucidate mechanisms behind PFC interference with steroid hormone receptor functions. Seven PFCs [perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorononanoate (PFNA), perfluorodecanoate (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoate (PFUnA), and perfluorododecanoate (PFDoA)] were analyzed in vitro for their potential to affect estrogen receptor (ER) and androgen receptor (AR) transactivity as well as aromatase enzyme activity. The PFCs were assessed as single compounds and in an equimolar mixture. PFHxS, PFOS and PFOA significantly induced the ER transactivity, whereas PFHxS, PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFDA significantly antagonized the AR activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, PFDA weakly decreased the aromatase activity at a high test concentration. A mixture effect more than additive was observed on AR function. We conclude that five of the seven PFCs possess the potential in vitro to interfere with the function of the ER and/or the AR. The observed mixture effect emphasizes the importance of considering the combined action of PFCs in future studies to assess related health risks.  相似文献

The biodegradation of organic matter in municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash was studied in order to investigate the interaction between the CO(2) produced by microbial respiration and bottom ash. Respiration tests were performed on bottom ash at different moisture contents in an incubator at 30 degrees C. O(2) consumption and CO(2) production were monitored and quantified. Leaching tests were carried out at the end of the experiments. Total organic carbon (TOC) leaching had decreased. Over a period of three weeks, pH decreased from 10.7 to 8.2 and bottom ash was considered to be fully carbonated. This showed that the organic matter found in bottom ash can provide a substrate for microbial activity. The CO(2) produced by microbial respiration was directly dissolved in bottom ash pore water in order to be mineralized in carbonate form. The origin of the carbon dioxide which induces maturation of bottom ash on weathering areas has never been really discussed and is often presumed to be atmospheric CO(2). However, biodegradation of organic matter could contribute for a large part to this phenomenon, depending on field-scale physico-chemical weathering conditions.  相似文献

As soil is a natural resource not always renewable, the risk characterization of contaminated soils is an issue of great interest. Artificial Intelligence (AI), based on Decision Support Systems (DSSs), has been developed for a wide range of applications in contaminated soil management. Decision trees have already shown to be easy to interpret and able to treat large scale applications. Fuzzy logic gives an improvement in the perturbations and the variance of the training data, due to the elasticity of fuzzy set formalism. In this study, we have developed a classificatory tool applied to characterize contaminated soil in function of human and environmental risks. Knowledge engineering for constructing the Soil Risk Characterization Decision Support System (SRC-DSS) involves three stages: knowledge acquisition, conceptual design and system implementation. A total of 26 parameters were divided into three groups to facilitate the configuration of the expert system: source attributes, transfer vector attributes, and local properties. Sixteen case studies were evaluated with the SRC-DSS. In comparison with other techniques, the results of the current study have shown that SRC-DDS is an excellent tool to classify and characterize soils according to the associated risk.  相似文献
