The paper reports a case of evident and widespread leaf damage on trees in southern Tuscany (Central Italy) attributed to the input of pollutants produced in a geothermal area. The main potentially phytotoxic substances are boron and hydrogen sulphide. Trees affected are conifers as well as both evergreen and deciduous broadleaves. In the present study the possible impact of geothermal pollutants on Quercus pubescens leaves has been considered. Leaf samples coming from three sampling locations (S1 inside the geothermal area; S2 on the margins; S3 outside) and three consecutive dates (June, July and August) were analyzed for the following parameters: sulphur and boron concentration; leaf area; leaf mass per area; chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm); chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoid concentrations. Anatomical and ultrastructural observations were also performed. In all sampling location sulphur and boron concentrations are greater than the background values recorded in southern Tuscany in a previous survey. The sulphur concentration in leaves was higher in S1 than S2 and S3, but did not increase throughout the survey period. Boron reached the greatest concentrations in S2 and showed a continuous increase over the study period. Leaves subjected to a higher load of pollutants were smaller in size (in terms of leaf area), but were more sclerophyllous. Damaged chloroplasts and reduced Fv/Fm values were observed at S1 and S2, but chlorophyll concentration values were higher at S1. Such an apparent anomaly can possibly be explained by the onset of compensation and recovery mechanisms. Foliar injuries appeared to be related to boron concentration.  相似文献

The Colline Metallifere (Tuscany) was a major Italian mining district (FeS2, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn) for centuries, and in the last fifty years it has become the most important area for the exploitation of geothermal resources. Leaves of the widespread oak Quercus pubescens and surface soils were collected from 90 sampling sites in the area and their elemental composition was compared. The results showed that the composition of oak leaves was not significantly affected by the presence of mineral deposits (metal sulphide ores) or soils with high concentrations of Cr, Mg, and Ni (ultramafic). Arsenic was the only element showing higher concentrations in leaves from sites with deposits of metal sulphide ores or As-polluted soils around abandoned smelting plants. Compared to the composition of epiphytic lichens andepigeic mosses from the same sites in the Colline Metallifere, the elemental composition of Q. pubescens leaves was less affected by element contributions from adsorbed soil particles. It was thus easier to evaluate atmospheric inputs of elements in oak leaves than in cryptogams.  相似文献

Here, we show that chlorination of organic compounds during humification processes in peat is widespread in nature. The feasibility of composting as disposal practice of husk mixed with olive mill wastewaters (OMW) was studied in the present research. The process was investigated with regards to some reliable and easy to be determined microbial activity parameters such as the ATP content, the activity of a pool of enzymes and the viable counts, keeping in mind the well known bias of this last technique. Two different composting technologies were compared: static pile and reactor by studying the cured composts obtained. Among the bioindicators tested, the composting process trend was described better by the ATP content and the activity of some enzymes. In fact, the ATP content showed an increase during the thermophilic phase in both the pile and the reactor, and decreased at the end of the process, it was also higher in the bioreactor-pile technology than in the pile. With regard to the enzymatic activity, with the reactor technology experiment, two peaks were evidenced in the thermophilic phase and during the curing phase in pile, and a drop during the transfer of material from the reactor to the pile. The quality of the cured product obtained using the reactor technology has been evaluated considering phytoxicity and hygienic features: the stabilised compost resulted to have neither phytoxical effect, nor faecal indicator contaminants.  相似文献

This paper describes a project in northern Chile aimed to promote the development of appropriate green areas and gardens for arid regions under prevalent conditions of shortage of water and high salt content in soil and water. Field studies were conducted to test the suitability of selected salt-tolerant native and introduced plants for ornamental use. Plant growth, water and soil quality, marine spray, climate, wastewater treatment and irrigation operating problems were the subject of specific studies and discussion.  相似文献

The widespread use of industrial chemicals in our highly industrialized society has often caused contamination of large terrestrial and marine areas due to the deliberate and accidental release of organic pollutants into the soil and groundwater. In this review, environmental problems arising from the use of chlorinated solvents and BTEX compounds are described, and an overview about active management strategies for remediation with special emphasis on phytoremediation are presented to achieve a reduction of the total mass of chlorinated solvents and BTEX compounds in contaminated areas. Phytoremediation has been proposed as an efficient, low-cost remediation technique to restore areas contaminated with chlorinated solvents and BTEX compounds. The feasibility of phytoremediation as a remediation tool for these compounds is discussed with particular reference to the uptake and metabolism of these compounds, and a future perspective on the use of phytoremediation for the removal of chlorinated solvents and BTEX compounds is given.  相似文献

A new active biomonitoring tool, keeping alive mosses for 2 months, had demonstrated the buffering action of the water presence on the biological activity of three moss species (chlorophyll fluorescence induction method on Pleurozium schreberi, Scleropodium purum, Eurhynchium praelongum). The two more resistant mosses were exposed on four different sites with parallel exposure of monthly bulk collectors during three successive periods of 2 months. The coarse and sedimentable particles of bulk collectors were separated into different size classes (> 1 mm; 1000-200 microm; 200-40 microm; 40-20 microm). Dry depositions and mosses were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for a stock (microg g(-1)- fluxes (microg m(-2) t(-1)) conversion. The "moss plate" allowed relative site (Ba, Cs, Sb, Sr, U) and species (Pb, Sb, Ti, V) comparisons. Two months were enough for a significant enrichment (Ba, Cd, Pb, Sb, Ti, U, V). Good explicative models were elaborated for Ba, Pb, Sb and Ti (r2 > 70%) including categorical (sites, moss species) and quantitative variables (fluxes of particles size classes). Entire and intact shoots of Scleropodium purum were analysed by detected synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence (SXRF). The in vivo distribution of the multi-elemental short term enrichment along the moss stem was mainly localized in the plant older parts (Pb, Ti, Cl, Se).  相似文献

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of the fungicide captan has been developed based on its reaction with thiosemicarbazide. The absorbance was measured at 315 nm. The effects of the proportion of water, thiosemicarbazide concentration, pH and temperature on this reaction was studied to select the best chemical conditions. The calibration graph was obtained between 1.2 and 30 ppm and the detection limit is 0.5 ppm. The RSD (n = 10) was 1.34%. Possible interference of various pesticides was examined. The method was applied to the determination of captan in agrochemical formulations. Results agree well with the labelled values and also with results that were obtained by a polarographic method.  相似文献
