An experimental and theoretical study of Eu(III) sorption on goethite surface was performed in the presence of different background electrolytes (NaCl, NaNO3, KNO3). Results were described using a simple surface complexation, the double-layer model (DLM), and calculations were performed using either Fiteql3.2 or Jchess codes. The surface acidity constants and sites density were first determined by potentiometric titrations. The influence of electrolyte ions on the value of point of zero charge was studied by both potentiometric and electrokinetic measurements in order to assess their possible retention on goethite. The sorption of Eu(III) was then investigated by the batch method, in the three background electrolytes, as a function of pH. The presence of electrolyte ions was found to decrease the immobilization of Eu on goethite. Sorption results were modelled considering ternary surface complexes (goethite surface/europium/electrolyte ions).  相似文献

Productivity was studied in two diatom species, Chaetoceros armatum T. West and Asterionella socialis Lewin and Norris, which form persistent dense blooms in the surf zone along the Pacific coast of Washington and Oregon, USA. Past observations have shown that surf-diatom standing stock usually declines in summer along with concentrations of nitrate and ammonium. Using the 14C method, photosynthetic rates in natural surf samples were measured monthly for one year (October 1981 through September 1982) at a study site on the Washington coast. Also measured were temperature, salinity, dissolved nutrients, particulate carbon and nitrogen (used as estimates of phytoplankton C and N), and chlorophyll a. Assimilation numbers (P max) were higher in summer (5 to 8 g C g-1 chl a h-1) than in winter (3 to 4gC). Specific carbon incorporation rates (µmax) showed no obvious seasonality, mostly falling within the range of 0.09 to 0.13 g C g-1 C(POC) h-1. The discrepancy between the seasonal trends for chlorophyll-specific and carbon-specific rates reflects a change in the carbon-to-chlorophyll ratio. Because of seasonal differences in daylength and light intensity, daily specific growth rates () are thought to be higher in summer than in winter. Neither ammonium enrichment assays nor particulate carbon-to-nitrogen ratios provided convincing evidence for nitrogen limitation during summer, and the observed changes in diatom abundance cannot be explained on this basis. Both the high diatom concentrations and their seasonal variations probably are due mainly to factors other than growth rates; two factors considered important are diatom flotation and seasonal changes in wind-driven water transport. Chromosomal mosaicism is one of several unanswered dilemmas in first-trimester prenatal diagnosis. We report the course of a pregnancy in which a normal karyotype was detected on direct CVS preparation and fetal blood, 100 per cent trisomy 21 in one long-term CVS culture, and low-rate trisomy 21 mosaicism in a second long-term CVS culture and amniocentesis. The phenotypically normal infant had a 6 per cent mosaicism of trisomy 21. It appears that a persistent low-rate mosaicism in different tissues may be indicative of the true status of the fetus.  相似文献

Animal prey has developed a variety of behavioural strategies to avoid predation. Many fish species form shoals in the open water or seek refuge in structurally complex habitats. Since anti-predator strategies bear costs and are energy-demanding, we hypothesised that the nutritional state of prey should modify the performance level and efficiency of such strategies. In aquaria either containing or lacking a structured refuge habitat, well-fed or food-deprived juvenile roach (Rutilus rutilus) were exposed to an open-water predator (pikeperch, Sander lucioperca). Controls were run without predators. In the presence of the predator, roach enhanced the performance of the anti-predator strategy and increased the use of the refuge habitat whereby food-deprived roach were encountered more often in the structure than well-fed roach. Nonetheless more starved than well-fed roach were fed upon by the predator. In the treatments offering only open-water areas, roach always formed dense shoals in the presence of the predator. The shoal density, however, was lower in starved roach. Starving fish in shoals experienced the highest predation mortality across all experimental treatments. The experiment confirmed the plasticity of the anti-predator behaviour in roach and demonstrated that food deprivation diminished the efficiency of shoaling more strongly than the efficiency of hiding. The findings may be relevant to spatial distribution of prey and predator–prey interactions under natural conditions because when prey are confronted with phases of reduced resource availability, flexible anti-predator strategies may lead to dynamic habitat use patterns.  相似文献

Siliceous nanoplankton in the size range 2.5 to 5.5 m and of a type hitherto undescribed are reported from Eastern Subarctic water samples. Nine distinct cell types were recognizable, each possessing an unusual tetrahedral symmetry, resulting from the arrangement of 8 siliceous plates. Since the cells were abundant (maximum concentration of about 7×105 cells 1-1) and were distributed over a wide oceanic area (136° to 149°W), they could well play an important role in the food web in Subarctic seas. Similar cells were found simultaneously in Antarctic waters (see following paper: Silver et al., 1980), where they were as abundant and widespread as in the Subarctic. The surf diatom Chaetoceros armatum T. West, collected from its natural habitat along the Washington coast (USA), had a large inorganic component in the form of a clay coat (consisting of clay minerals, illite and montmorillonite) surrounding the cell chains: 63% of the dry weight of the natural material collected in November was inorganic. The organic fraction was composed of 67.6% lipid, 29.7% protein, and 1.3% carbohydrate. Culture cells were likewise high in protein and lipid and low in carbohydrate. Traces of chitin found in field samples were probably a contaminant, since chitin was absent from cultured cells. This diatom species serves as a major food source throughout the year for the Pacific razor clam Siliqua patula Dixon, which inhabits these same beaches. Protein constituted 47% and lipid 42% of the dry weight of razor clam tissue. The fatty acid distribution in the diatom lipid resembled that previously reported for other diatom species; similarly, the fatty acid distribution of the clam lipid was similar to that previously reported for other bivalve molluscs. Electricity network investment and asset management require accurate estimation of future demand in energy consumption within specified service areas. For this purpose, simple models are typically developed to predict future trends in electricity consumption using various methods and assumptions. This paper presents a statistical model to predict electricity consumption in the residential sector at the Census Collection District (CCD) level over the state of New South Wales, Australia, based on spatial building and household characteristics. Residential household demographic and building data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and actual electricity consumption data from electricity companies are merged for 74 % of the 12,000 CCDs in the state. Eighty percent of the merged dataset is randomly set aside to establish the model using regression analysis, and the remaining 20 % is used to independently test the accuracy of model prediction against actual consumption. In 90 % of the cases, the predicted consumption is shown to be within 5 kWh per dwelling per day from actual values, with an overall state accuracy of ?1.15 %. Given a future scenario with a shift in climate zone and a growth in population, the model is used to identify the geographical or service areas that are most likely to have increased electricity consumption. Such geographical representation can be of great benefit when assessing alternatives to the centralised generation of energy; having such a model gives a quantifiable method to selecting the ‘most’ appropriate system when a review or upgrade of the network infrastructure is required.  相似文献

Dinitrotoluenes (DNTs) are widely used in the manufacturing of explosives and propellants hence causing contamination of several terrestrial and aquatic environments. The present study describes biotransformation of 2,4-DNT and 2,6-DNT in marine sediment sampled from a shipwreck site near Halifax Harbour. Incubation of either 2,4-DNT or 2,6-DNT in anaerobic sediment slurries (10% w/v) at 10 degrees C led to the reduction of both DNTs to their corresponding diaminotoluene (2,4-DAT and 2,6-DAT) via the intermediary formation of their monoamine derivatives (ANTs). The production of diaminotoluene was enhanced in the presence of lactate for both DNT isomers. Using [(14)C]-2,4-DNT less than 1% mineralization was observed as determined by liberated (14)CO(2). Sorption of DNTs, ANTs, and DATs was thus investigated to learn of their fate in marine sediments. Under anaerobic conditions, sorption followed the order: DNTs (K(d)=8.3-11.7lkg(-1))>ANTs (K(d)=4.5-7.0lkg(-1))>DATs (K(d)=3.8-4.5lkg(-1)). Incubation of 2,4-DAT in aerobic sediment led to rapid disappearance from the aqueous phase. LC/MS analysis of the aqueous phase and the acetone sediment extract showed the formation of azo- and hydrazo-dimers and trimers, as well as unidentified polymers. Experiments with radiolabelled 2,4-DAT showed a mass balance distributed as follows: 22% in the aqueous phase, 24% in acetone extracts, and 50% irreversibly bound to sediment. We concluded that DNT in anoxic marine sediment can undergo in situ natural attenuation by reduction to DAT followed by oxidative coupling to hydrazo-oligomers or irreversible binding to sediment.  相似文献
