We present in this work preliminary results on the translocation of copper, manganese and iron from soil to leaves of Sambucus nigra L. seedlings in the presence of increasing copper concentrations in the growth medium. The use of electron spin resonance spectroscopy and the comparison with atomic absorption spectroscopy is not presently common in the study of metal absorption in plants. This approach gave promising results both on the detection of some metal ions, as well as of radical species related to the presence of Cu2+ in plant tissues. Augmenting Small Populations of Plovers: An Assessment of Cross-Fostering and Captive-Rearing 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study compared the growth and behavioral development of parent-reared, cross-fostered, and captive-reared Killdeer ( Charadrius vociferus ) chicks. Common species were used to test these techniques for possible application to rare endangered forms. Parent-reared chicks were raised naturally in the wild, cross-fostered chicks were raised by Spotted Sandpipers ( Actitis macularia ) in the wild, and captive-reared chicks were raised in captivity by humans. Both hatching and fledging success were significantly increased by captive-rearing, and cross-fostering produced approximately the same number of fledged young as natural parent-rearing. Captive-reared Killdeer chicks spent more time resting and less time feeding and stayed closer to siblings than cross-fostered or parent-reared chicks; these behavioral differences were not seen after release to the wild. Growth rates among the three groups were similar. All of the young Killdeer responded to Killdeer alarm calls. There was no evidence that captive-reared and cross-fostered Killdeer were negatively affected by their early experiences. Captive-rearing is a viable management technique for augmenting small populations of endangered shorebirds, such as the Piping Plover ( Charadrius melodus ). It is recommended over cross-fostering because captive-rearing is more flexible as a technique, produces more young, does not affect another species, and does not produce potential imprinting problems. 相似文献

Resource value is often considered the most important nonstrategic variable in the fighting behavior of invertebrates. In
our study, we tested whether the experience of shells of a given quality, occupied in the recent past, might affect the agonistic
behavior of the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus. We analyzed the fights battled by 84 test crabs against size-matched unknown rivals before (premanipulation phase) and after
(postmanipulation phase) having modified the quality of the domicile shell of the contestants. Specifically, we compared the
behavior of crabs that had been subject to either a worsening or an improvement in the quality of their shell with crabs that,
although being similarly subject to a shell manipulation, occupied a shell of the same quality as in the premanipulation phase.
We found that the crabs subject to a worsening in the quality of their shell were more aggressive than those subject to its
improvement and that the former were even more aggressive than those that occupied a bad quality shell also in the premanipulation
phase. Crabs seemed not to gather information about the opponent’s shell during fights or not to use this information, most
often behaving in accordance with the quality of the domicile shell. These results are clear in showing the role played by
the experience of a previously occupied shell, also confirming that the agonistic behavior of P. longicarpus is mainly based on decision rules of the type “own resource value dependency.” 相似文献

When released after clock-shift, homing pigeons fail to orient towards the home direction but display a consistent deflection of their initial orientation due to the difference between the real sun azimuth and the computed azimuth according to the subjective time of each single bird. It has been reported that the size of the observed deflection is frequently smaller than expected and a discussion on the possible factors affecting the size of deflection has emerged. Some authors have proposed that the major factor in reducing the deflection after clock-shift is the simultaneous use of both the magnetic and the sun compasses, giving true and erroneous information, respectively, about the home direction. Therefore, a magnetic disturbance, by impeding the use of the geomagnetic information in determining the home direction, is presumed to increase the size of the deflection up to the levels of the expectation. To test this hypothesis, we released three groups of clock-shifted birds from unfamiliar locations (unmanipulated pigeons, pigeons bearing magnets on their head, and pigeons bearing magnets on their back) together with a group of unshifted control birds. As no difference in the orientation of the three groups emerged, we were not able to confirm the hypothesis of the role of the magnetic compass in reducing the expected deflection after clock-shift.Communicated by W. The food system’s decreasing ability to deliver food security has led to the emergence of food assistance initiatives. Food assistance is highly contested; as some argue, it is a “failure of the state”, while others regard food assistance to be an “extension of the welfare state”. Either way, research suggests that actors within food assistance are rethinking their role in the food system. In this paper, we study three food assistance initiatives, in the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland, that perform new food assistance practices while embedded in specific institutional contexts, and analyse their potential to transform the food system, drawing on Transformative Social Innovation theory. Building on transition and social innovation theory, this recently developed theory distinguishes different levels within systems, named “shades of change”, that are associated with societal transformation. By exploring these “shades” of change in the analysis, we describe aspects of the initiatives’ novel practices, and in relation to the initiative and institutional relations their motivations and expectations. We compare the three cases and discuss how food assistance practices relate to and change (or do not change) the food system. In particular, we elaborate on how these three food assistance initiatives contribute in various ways to local food and welfare system innovation. In doing so, we offer a novel perspective on food assistance initiatives. We argue that they show dynamics that have the potential for more substantial transformation towards food security over time, by building momentum through “small wins”. 相似文献

The implementation of an adaptive cluster sampling design often becomes logistically challenging because variation in the final sampling effort introduces uncertainty in survey planning. To overcome this drawback, an inexpensive and easy to measure auxiliary variable could be used in a two-phase survey strategy, called adaptive cluster double sampling (Félix-Medina and Thompson in Biometrika 91:877–891, 2004). In this paper, a two-phase sampling strategy is proposed which combines the idea of adaptive cluster double sampling with the principle of post-stratification. In the first-phase an adaptive cluster sample is selected by means of an inexpensive auxiliary variable. Networks from the first phase sampling are then post-stratified according to their size. In the second-phase, the network structure is used to select a subsample of units by means of stratified random sampling. The proposed sampling strategy employs stratification without requiring an a priori delineation of the strata. Indeed, the strata sizes are estimated in the course of the two-phase sampling process. Therefore, it is suitable for situations where stratification is suspected to be efficient but strata cannot be easily delineated in advance. In this framework, a new type of estimator for the population mean which mimics the stratified sampling mean estimator and an estimator of the sampling variance are proposed. The results of a simulation study confirm, as expected, that the use of post-stratification leads to gain in precision for the estimator. The proposed sampling strategy is applied for targeting an epiphytic lichen community Lobarion pulmonariae in a forest area of the Northern Apennines (N-Italy), characterized by several species of conservation concern. 相似文献

The phylum Gastrotricha includes about 750 species of meiobenthic marine and freshwater species that are often widely distributed.
The microscopic size, short life cycle, low motility of adults, and the absence of larval stages normally required for dispersal
raise doubts about the putative cosmopolitan distribution of many of gastrotrich species. The phenomenon of cosmopolitanism
is acknowledged for all major meiobenthic taxa (“the meiofauna paradox”) and can be explained, at least in part, with the
existence of sibling species, so far identified primarily by molecular analysis. In this paper, we report the discovery of
sibling species in the marine chaetonotidan Xenotrichula intermedia using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). A total of 40 specimens collected from two geographically separate populations,
the Mediterranean (Adriatic Sea) and the Arabian Gulf (Kuwait), were investigated. Fifteen specimens of each population were
studied in vivo with a contrast interference microscope (DIC) in order to obtain the main morphometric parameters; ten other
animals (five in each population) were fixed and marked with fluorescent phalloidin for the observation of their muscular
systems under CLSM. The metrics and meristic data of the two populations fall within the range of measures recognized for
the species. Pairwise comparisons (t-test) in general did not reveal statistically significant differences between the traits of specimens belonging to the two
populations; moreover, multivariate analyses (cluster- and MDS analysis) were unable to separate clearly the Mediterranean
from the Arabian specimens. In contrast, an examination of their muscular systems revealed clear dissimilarities between the
two geographic groups. In particular, while the Italian specimens possessed incomplete circular bands and dorsoventrally orientated
muscles that are partially inserted into the basal lamina of the cuticle, in both splanchnic- and somatic positions, their
Arabian counterparts showed partial dorsoventral bands and complete circular muscles that surround the entire body of the
animal in the same corresponding positions. Additional differences in the position of helicoidal bands (present in a more
anterior location in the Italian specimens) are noted between Mediterranean and Arabian specimens. Since the investigated
animals share a similar interstitial habitat, a working hypothesis connects the differences in the musculature to possible
differences in the reproductive modality of specimens between the two populations. 相似文献
