We report an ultrastructural study of the morphological changes in cells of the marine dinoflagellate Pyrocystis noctiluca Murray, which correlate with its vertical migration pattern. Cells alternate between a large, highly vacuolated, positively
buoyant, vegetative cyst surrounded by a dinosporin-containing wall and a smaller, more compact, negatively buoyant, cellulose-bounded
cell. The cyst wall is composed of two layers: a thin smooth outer layer, thought to be composed of dinosporin, and a thick
inner layer that likely to be cellulosic. One or two thecate cells are formed from within the cysts. Thecate cells are smaller,
more compact and contain many small translucent bodies. They are surrounded by a typical dinoflagellate amphiesmal layer composed
of membranes and cellulose plates. The amphiesmal layer appears only in recently divided cells and exists for only one night.
By the following day, the cellulose wall has been replaced by a new dinosporin wall synthesized from beneath the cellulose
thecal layer. The cyst stage is suggested as being optimized for photosynthesis, whereas the compact, negatively buoyant,
thecate form is thought to allow nutrient uptake in deeper waters. Vertical migration in this species is thus correlated with
the presence of dinosporin wall during most of its stay in the upper waters, alternating with a brief thecate wall in deeper
nutrient-rich waters. This is the first report correlating dinoflagellate vertical migration with changes in cell-wall composition.

The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is the only infectious agent for which a close association with human malignant tumors has been clearly demonstrated. These tumors are one type of nasopharyngeal carcinoma which is frequent in parts of East Asia and the Burkitt lymphoma which predominantly occurs in parts of Africa and New Guinea. Nonetheless, the EBV is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis (IM), a benign, self-limiting lymphoproliferative disease of adolescents. The major difference between the countries in which the EBV-induced tumors occur and those in which IM occurs is the late primary EBV infection in the latter, whereas primary infection with EBV occurs in the first year of life in the former. All theories of viral carcinogenesis have to explain the long latency period between primary infection and tumor growth and how an ubiquitous virus may be oncogenic. Thus, invariably, one has to assume a role of cofactors, which may be of cytogenetic nature or may be represented by additional infections or by chemical agents. Since most modern theories of carcinogenesis consider a multi-step development of tumors, the theory that infection with an ubiquitous virus at the right time of life represents one step to carcinogenesis seems to be tenable. 相似文献

Bark samples of spruce, pine and oak trees were collected at two sites in southern Bavaria which are characterized by high agricultural ammonia emissions. The samples were taken using a recently developed bark sampling device which removes a defined layer of the bark. The bark was then analysed for ammonium concentration in order to reflect the environmental ammonia immission. The measured bark concentrations decreased with rising distance between the sample trees and the ammonia source. This applied (i) to measurements inside a closed forest stand ranging from forest edge with high immission to forest interior with much lower immission, and (ii) to the open field where single-standing trees were sampled. Comparing the ammonium concentrations among the three different tree species revealed significant correlations. Thus, it could be shown that old spruce trees are as usable for bark bio-monitoring as the traditionally used pine and oak trees. The ammonium concentrations of the bark were significantly correlated to measurements taken by ammonia passive samplers at the same locations. These results indicate that bark samples may be used for a standardised monitoring of airborne ammonia load. A major advantage of the technique is the determination of the long-term accumulative ammonia load using a single measurement. 相似文献

Many vertebrates grow up in the company of same or different-age siblings, and relations among them can be expected to significantly
influence individual life histories and the development of individual morphological, physiological, and behavioral phenotypes.
Although studies in birds still dominate and have stimulated most theoretical considerations, the increasing number of mammalian
studies promises to broaden our understanding of this complex field by enabling interesting comparisons with the rather different
bird system. It therefore seems timely to bring together recent studies of sibling relations in mammals and to demonstrate
what these can offer in the way of fresh insights. In this brief review, intended to accompany a series of papers on a diverse
range of mammals, we outline the current state of sibling research in mammals, comparing it to the better studied birds. Most
obviously, in mammals, mother and young are in much closer contact during early life than in birds, and siblings can influence
each other’s development as well as the mother’s physiology while still in utero. During nursing, mammalian young also encounter
a very different feeding situation to bird siblings. These contrasts should help stimulate further debate, as well as provide
further opportunities to study the relative importance of maternal versus sibling effects on individual development. Finally,
we discuss the need to balance studies of sibling competition and conflict with a consideration of the benefits accruing to
individuals from sibling presence and the need for long-term studies of the influence of early sibling relations on individual
development and life histories.

The fate of pharmaceuticals in surface waters under solar irradiation was investigated. Photodegradation of pharmaceuticals caused by sun irradiation may be of major significance in the natural elimination process. Based on a data compilation from the literature, the lipid lowering agent metabolite clofibric acid, the iodinated X-ray contrast media iomeprol, which contribute to the adsorbable organic halogen compounds, and the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine were selected. The irradiation experiments were carried out in batch experiments with simulated UV–sunlight. The photodegradation of the pharmaceuticals showed a pseudo-first-order kinetics. The objective of this investigation was to demonstrate that the extent of photoinduced degradation of pharmaceuticals can vary significantly for the different pharmaceuticals and it strongly depends on the water constituents present in solution. The influences of different initial pharmaceutical concentrations, the presence of other pharmaceuticals like carbamazepine or clofibric acid and the presence of natural organic matter on the photochemical degradation rate of pharmaceuticals in aqueous solutions were investigated. Analyses of the pharmaceuticals and their photodegradation products were carried out by high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array and fluorescence detection. 相似文献
