Abstract: Legume trees have been harvested in the Sonoyta Valley since 1975. We estimated the effects of this woodcutting along the border between Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (U.S.A.) and Sonora, Mexico. We placed 10 × 100 m transects in ephemeral watercourses and uplands on both sides of the international boundary at different distances from the border. Mesquite and ironwood trees exhibited significantly higher damage in the Mexican sites than in the protected uplands in the United States. Damage for all the species significantly decreased 500 m from the border, with the exception of ironwood, for which damage remained high within ephemeral watercourses. 相似文献

Phosphorus release from stream sediments into water could increase P loads leaving agricultural watersheds and contribute to lag-time between implementation of best management practices and improvement in water quality. Improved understanding of P release from stream sediments can assist in setting water quality goals and designing stream monitoring programs. The objective of this study was to estimate the relative potential of sediments and soils to release P to stream water in two agricultural watersheds. Stream sediments were collected from banks, pools, riffles, and depositional features. Soils were sampled from wheat, row crop, pasture, and manure-amended fields. Sediments and soils were analyzed for equilibrium P concentration at zero net P sorption (EPC0), maximum P adsorption capacity (P(max)), anion exchange extractable P (P(lab)), and degree of P saturation. Dissolved reactive P (DRP) of stream water was monitored. Stream sediment EPC0 was similar to or less than EPC0 from field soils; however, P(lab) of stream sediments was three times less than field soils. Sediments were sandy and had low P(max) due to low oxalate-extractable Fe and Al, which could be explained by stream geomorphology. Manure-amended fields had the highest EPC0 and P(lab) due to continued inputs of manure-based P; however, conventionally fertilized fields also represented an important P source due to their vast extent. Stream water DRP was similar to EPC0 of sediments during base flow and similar to EPC0 of field soils during storm flow. This study compares water quality parameters, shrimp growth and mortality rates, and biomass at harvest in two ponds of equal size, seeded with the same density (7 m2) of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and Monodon Baculo Virus (MBV) negative post-larvae (PL)-20 of shrimp, Penaeus monodon in the Vellar estuary of South India. The primary difference between the ponds was the water source; one was filled from the estuary and the second with water from bore wells with high alkalinity. Temperature in both ponds was similar and reached 320C after 185 days of culture. Dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were within the acceptable range although levels in the alkaline pond were near the lower limit for the last 90 days before harvest. Salinity levels were similar in both ponds, above optimal levels, and increased over the 185 days. Alkalinity in the estuarine water was typically <50 ppm and again 200-320 ppm in the alkaline pond. In the alkaline pond, beginning on the 75th day mineral deposits was observed covering all parts of the shrimp including the eye and the inner gill chambers, and by harvest, 42% of the shrimp showed this coating. Elemental analysis identified the major constituents as calcium, phosphorus and manganese. Survival rates in the estuarine-water-fed pond was 92% with a total pond biomass at harvest of 1.65 tons ha-1 compared to survival of 79% in the alkaline pond and a biomass at harvest of 1.020 tons ha-1. When well water must be used, its alkalinity should be monitored and diluted with water from other sources. 相似文献

Stream biological assessment reflects not just conventional water quality, but an environmental quality that represents the integrity of the stream ecosystem. In Britain, Australia and the United States, macroinvertebrate predictive models were built and applied to stream assessment by employing multivariate analysis. There were variations in these models, where adaptations were made for different regions, but the philosophy underlying the models was similar: employ site classification to predict expected assemblage. Taxon assemblage is predicted from reference groups with similar stream features; these resulting models are RIVPACS-style models. Because every site has to belong to one group in the classification process, each reference group might include some dissimilar sites, and their dissimilarity in taxon assemblage impaired the results of taxon predictions from these models. To avoid this limitation, this study employed a Region-of-Influence-style (ROI-style) modeling method, selecting only similar reference sites and allowing each site to build its own reference group.Three different Region-of-Influence selection schemes were applied to improve the macroinvertebrate predictive model in Maryland: the Assessment by Nearest Neighbour Analysis (ANNA), the Burn's Region of Influence (BROI), and the New Datum Region of Influence (NROI) predictive schemes. The prediction results from ANNA, BROI, and NROI were compared, and the reference selections of each predictive scheme were examined. The comparison showed no preference for the total number of reference sites used by either predictive scheme. The number of reference sites did not correlate to the quality of reference sites used and thus does not control the predictability. The ROI-style model in Maryland had better prediction performance than the RIVPACS-style models, and could improve the bioassessment of streams. 相似文献

Regional Turnover and Fluctuation in Populations of Five Plants Confined to Serpentine Seeps 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: Spatial patterns in population turnover were analyzed for five plant species confined to a patchy and isolated habitat, serpentine seeps: annuals Helianthus exilis and Mimulus nudatus and perennials Senecio clevelandii , Astragalus clevelandii , and Delphinium uliginosum . A 3-year survey showed that, over a preceding 15-year period, 32 of 132 known populations in a 4200-ha area disappeared, and 65 new populations appeared. Populations that disappeared were significantly more isolated from conspecific populations than were surviving populations. Populations that disappeared were also marginally significantly closer to human-caused disturbances than were populations that survived. Vacant sites in which new populations appeared were significantly less isolated from conspecific populations than sites remaining vacant. Spatial patterns in population density were analyzed for three of the species for 3 years at 50 sites in a 20 × 40 km region. From 1997 to 1998, population densities of each species changed synchronously throughout the region. From 1998 to 1999, one species ( Mimulus nudatus ) again showed synchrony, and populations of the other two species ( Helianthus exilis , Delphinium uliginosum ) remained asynchronous and spatially uncorrelated. The five species we studied all appear to be persisting well at the regional scale, despite recent disturbance to the study region. These results suggest that for rare plants in isolated habitats, the spatial configuration of populations may have an important influence on local population persistence. 相似文献
