During the demolition of an industrial building contaminated with chlorophenols and polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (from Boehringer & Sohn in Hamburg-Moorfleet, Germany), several measures must be taken in order to protect the surroundings. Since these compounds are strongly adsorbed by particulate matter, a mist is continuously sprayed over the whole building. The waste water is expected to be highly contaminated and must therefore undergo extensive purification procedures. The primary goal of the existing study is to examine whether or not the present effluent reprocessing unit, a system which is comprised of a charcoal filter, is able to clean the waste water according to legal requirements. Secondly, the main factors that influence the clean up of the effluent were investigated in order to design a suitable precleaning unit for the contaminated water should the present reprocessing unit not fulfill these requirements. By means of the factorial design technique, the effect of three factors (flow velocity of the water, amount of charcoal and the pH-value) on the efficiency of the cleaning process and with regard to chlorophenols was examined. Surprisingly, the pH-value does not have a significant effect on the efficiency. In addition, the results of the experiments show that a precleaning of the effluent is not required.  相似文献

We examined the genetic identities of 49 individuals of four species of eels in the genus Anguilla Shaw, A. anguilla, A. japonica, A. reinhardti and A. rostrata, using the random(ly) amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR technique. We used 15 random decamer primers. Out of the 22 148 amplification products detected, 454 markers were evaluated using Nei's distance coefficient, two numerical methods (neighbor-joining, UPGMA), and phylogenetic analysis using parsimony (PAUP). Both numerical and parsimony methods were congruent and confirmed the specific status of all four examined Anguilla species. In all dendrograms, all individuals of each of the species clustered together within four closed groups with highly significant bootstrap values (between 97 and 100%). Additionally 1 to 18 species-specific monomorphic diagnostic fragments were detected in three of the species; none were detected in A. anguilla. Mean interspecific genetic distances ranged from 0.384 to 0.559, with the minimum between A. anguilla and A. rostrata and the maximum between A. anguilla and A. reinhardti. Individuals collected at one locality and belonging to a single species did not cluster together, and neither were any diagnostic monomorphic fragments found for individuals of single localities. This probably reflects a random dispersal of larvae in ocean currents before they reach coastal waters. Among all possible species pairs, only the two Atlantic species were consistently clustered in all dendrograms, with highly significant bootstrap values (100%). Additionally, we detected ten diagnostic markers for this pair of eel species. From RAPD data, we suggest a phylogram which was routed by the descending analysis method: A. reinhardti appears to have been the first species to diverge from a putative common ancestor of the four eel species. Later, A. japonica separated from the hypothetical ancestor of the Atlantic species, which then split recently into A. anguilla and A. rostrata. The close relationship of A. anguilla and A. rostrata is indicated by their low genetic distance (GD = 0.384) and a high degree of shared RAPD fragments (SF = 71.2%); this compares with the following means for all other species pairs: ( = 0.531,  = 44.2%). The prerequisites for using RAPD data for the reconstruction of phylogenies are discussed. Received: 2 September 1999 / Accepted: 8 May 2000  相似文献

Female houseflies, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae), lay their eggs in ephemeral resources such as animal manure. Hatching larvae compete for essential nutrients with fungi that also colonize such resources. Both the well-known antagonistic relationship between bacteria and fungi and the consistent presence of the bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca on housefly eggs led us to hypothesize (1) that K. oxytoca, and possibly other bacteria on housefly eggs, help curtail the growth of fungal resource competitors and (2) that such fungi indeed adversely affect the development of housefly larvae. Bacteria washed from housefly eggs significantly reduced the growth of fungi in chicken manure. Nineteen bacterial strains and ten fungal strains were isolated from housefly eggs or chicken manure, respectively. Co-culturing each of all the possible bacterium–fungus pairs revealed that the bacteria as a group, but no single bacterium, significantly suppressed the growth of all fungal strains tested. The bacteria's adverse effect on fungi is due to resource nutrient depletion and/or the release of antifungal chemicals. Well-established fungi in resources significantly reduced the number of larval offspring that completed development to adult flies. We investigated speciation, oxidative state changes, and long- and short-term molecular-level dynamics of organic S after 365 d of aerobic incubation with and without the addition of sugarcane residue using XANES spectroscopy. Soil samples were collected from the upper 15 cm of undisturbed grasslands since 1880, from undisturbed grasslands since 1931, and from cultivated fields since 1880 in the western United States. We found three distinct groups of organosulfur compounds in these grassland-derived soils: (i) strongly reduced (S to S) organic S that encompasses thiols, monosulfides, disulfides, polysulfides, and thiophenes; (ii) organic S in intermediate oxidation (S to S) states, which include sulfoxides and sulfonates; and (iii) strongly oxidized (S) organic S, which comprises ester-SO-S. The first two groups represent S directly linked to C and accounted for 80% of the total organic S detected by XANES from the undisturbed soils. Aerobic incubation without the addition of sugarcane residue led to a 21% decline in organanosulfur compounds directly linked to C and to up to an 82% increase inorganic S directly bonded to O. Among the C-bonded S compounds, low-valence thiols, sulfides, thiophenic S, and intermediate-valence sulfoxide S seem to be highly susceptible to microbial attack and may represent the most reactive components of organic S pool in these grassland soils. Sulfonate S exhibited a much lower short-term reactivity. The incorporation of sugarcane residue resulted in an increase in organosulfur compounds directly bonded to C at the early stage of incubation. However, similar to soils incubated without residue addition, the proportion of organic S directly linked to C continued to decline with increasing duration of aerobic incubation, whereas the proportion of organic S directly bonded to O showed a steady rise.  相似文献

Local mate competition (LMC) occurs when brothers compete with each other for mating opportunities, resulting in selection for a female-biased sex ratio within local groups. If multiple females oviposit in the same patch, their sons compete for mating opportunities with non-brothers. Females, in the presence of other females, should thus produce relatively more sons. Sex ratio theory also predicts a more female-biased sex ratio when ovipositing females are genetically related, and sex-ratio responses to foundress size if it differentially affects fitness gains from sons versus daughters. The mating system of the parasitoid wasp Ooencyrtus kuvanae meets assumptions of LMC. Females insert a single egg into each accessible egg of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, host egg masses. Wasps complete development inside host eggs and emerge en masse, as sexually mature adults, resulting in intense competition among brothers. We tested the hypothesis that O. kuvanae exhibits LMC by manipulating the number of wasp foundresses on egg masses with identical numbers of eggs. As predicted by LMC theory, with increasing numbers of wasp foundresses on an egg mass, the proportions of emerging sons increased. In contrast, the presence of a sibling compared to a non-sibling female during oviposition, or the size of a female, did not affect the number or sex ratio of offspring produced. The O. kuvanae system differs from others in that larvae do not compete for local resources and thus do not distort the sex ratio in favor of sons. With no resource competition among O. kuvanae larvae, the sex ratio of emergent son and daughter wasps is due entirely to the sex allocation by ovipositing wasp foundresses on host egg masses.  相似文献
