The issue of E-waste disposal is concerning all the stakeholders, from policymakers to the end users which have accelerated the research and development on environmentally sound disposal of E-waste. The recovery of metals (gold, tantalum, copper, iron etc.) from E-waste has become an important focus. The mechanical recycling, thermo-chemical processes like pyrolysis, pyro-, hydro- and biometallurgical processes can play important roles in the Metal Recovery from E-waste (MREW) technology. For the industrial application of the MREW technology, it is important to analyze the sustainability. In this paper, two case studies have been presented on E-waste recycling industries in India and China. Based on the literature data, an attempt has been made to assess qualitatively the overall sustainability of MREW technology considering the three pillars, i.e., environmental, economic and social. Two conceptual frameworks with (Option-2) and without (Option-1) pyrolysis for integrated MREW units have been developed and the generalized energy and environmental impact analysis has been made using the principles of LCA. The impacts of two options have been compared. Option 2 has been found to be more efficient and sustainable. It has been realized that climate change, fossil fuel depletion, water depletion, eutrophication, acidification, fresh and marine water ecotoxicity are possible impact categories. The recommendations based on the generalized assessment are in good agreement with the findings of previous researchers on individual steps of MREW unit. The findings of this paper are expected to be beneficial to researchers and stakeholders for research directions and decision making on MREW.

Hooghly–Matla estuarine ecosystem of India is very rich in natural resources and receives large amount of nutrients through litterfall from adjacent mangrove forest. Nitrogen as an important nutrient occurs in various forms and plays a crucial role in the regulation of productivity in this estuarine system. Modelling of nitrogen dynamics from mangrove litterfall and particularly the release of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in this estuarine system is important because of its role in augmenting growth of phytoplankton and other higher plants and all other biological components of grazing food chain. 相似文献
In recent years, organizations are becoming environment conscious due to stringent laws, competitive advantages and increasing awareness of customers. They are integrating environmental practices into their operations to curb carbon emissions. Regulatory bodies are also imposing carbon policies to check emission. In this paper, we developed three models considering three carbon policies (I. carbon tax, II. strict cap and III. cap-and-trade) and have determined the optimal order quantity and number of shipments for a two-echelon supply chain. The objective is to minimize the total supply chain cost which comprises the ordering, setup, production, inventory holding and transportation costs. In Model I tax on carbon emissions has been included in the cost function; in Model II we have considered a strict carbon cap on the total carbon emission; and in Model III trading price of carbon is included in the cost function. A numerical study is given to illustrate the solution procedure. Further, sensitivity analyses are performed to examine the impact of the various parameters on the total cost and total emission. 相似文献
Until the 20th century, forest policies across the globe focused primarily on effective forest utilization for timber production. Subsequent loss of forest land prompted many countries to review and amend such policies, in an attempt to incorporate the principles of conservation and sustainable forest management. One of the countries to implement such changes was India, which introduced new policies, acts and programmes to regulate forest conversion and degradation, beginning in the 1980s. These policies, acts, and programmes included the Forest Conservation Act of 1980, the National Forest Policy of 1988 and the Hon. Supreme Court Order of 1996. All of these regulations affected the timber supply from government forest areas, and created a huge gap in timber supply and demand. Currently, this deficit is met through imports and trees outside forests (TOFs). Timber production from government forest areas is abysmally low (3.35% of total demand) compared to potential timber production from TOFs, which fulfil 45% of the total timber demand in India. This implies that TOFs have immense potential in meeting the growing timber demand; however, they have not been fully utilized due to discrepancies in state level TOFs’ policies. The present paper provides a review of different forest policies, acts and guidelines in relation to timber production in India, and provides specific recommendations in order to maximize timber production in the context of increasing demand for timber products. 相似文献
Several reports have indicated that low level of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure can adversely affect a multitude of physiological disorders and diseases in in vitro, in vivo, and as reported in epidemiological studies. This investigation is focused on the possible contribution of two most prevalent PCB congeners in vitro in developing toxicities. We used PCBs 138 and 153 at the human equivalence level as model agents to test their specificity in developing toxicities. We chose a global approach using oligonucleotide microarray technology to investigate modulated gene expression for biological effects, upon exposure of PCBs, followed by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA), to understand the underlying consequence in developing disease and disorders. We performed in vitro studies with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), where PBMC cells were exposed to respective PCBs for 48 h. Overall, our observation on gene expression indicated that PCB produces a unique signature affecting different pathways, specific for each congener. While analyzing these data through IPA, the prominent and interesting disease and disorders were neurological disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, as well as endocrine system disorders, genetic disorders, and reproductive system disease. They showed strong resemblances with in vitro, in vivo, and in the epidemiological studies. A distinct difference was observed in renal and urological diseases, organisimal injury and abnormalities, dental disease, ophthalmic disease, and psychological disorders, which are only revealed by PCB 138 exposure, but not in PCB 153. The present study emphasizes the challenges of global gene expression in vitro and was correlated with the results of exposed human population. The microarray results give a molecular mechanistic insight and functional effects, following PCB exposure. The extent of changes in genes related to several possible mode(s) of action highlights the changes in cellular functions and signaling pathways that play major roles. In addition to understanding the pathways related to mode of action for chemicals, these data could lead to the identification of genomic signatures that could be used for screening of chemicals for their potential to cause disease and developmental disorders. 相似文献
The environmental fate and behaviour of titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) nanoparticles is a rapidly expanding area of research. There is a paucity of information regarding toxic effect of TiO(2) nanoparticles in plants and to certain extent in humans. The present study focuses on the effect of exposure of TiO(2) nanoparticles in two trophic levels, plant and human lymphocytes. The genotoxicity of TiO(2) nanoparticles was evaluated using classical genotoxic endpoints, comet assay and DNA laddering technique. DNA damaging potential of TiO(2) nanoparticles in Allium cepa and Nicotiana tabacum as representative of plant system could be confirmed in the comet assay and DNA laddering experiments. In Allium micronuclei and chromosomal aberrations correlated with the reduction in root growth. We detected increased level of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration at 4mM (0.9 μM) treatment dose of TiO(2) nanoparticles in Allium cepa. This indicated that lipid peroxidation could be involved as one of the mechanism leading to DNA damage. A comparative study of the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of TiO(2) nanoparticles and bulk TiO(2) particles in human lymphocytes also reveal interesting results. While TiO(2) nanoparticles were found to be genotoxic at a low dose of 0.25 mM followed by a decrease in extent of DNA damage at higher concentrations; bulk TiO(2) particles reveal a more or less dose dependent effect, genotoxic only at dose 1.25 mM and above. The study thus confirms the genotoxic potential of TiO(2) nanoparticles in both plant and human lymphocytes. 相似文献
Starches modified by Ophiostoma spp. have been investigated to develop bio-materials with enhanced mechanical and physical properties for thermoplastic applications.
In this study, glass transition temperature (Tg) of modified starches was investigated in both dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC)
to detect molecular changes in the starch’s structure. Overall, two thermal transitions were observed in modified starches,
as opposed to one in their native counterparts. Scanning electron microscopy of granular modified starch indicated visible
damages and internal structural perturbations in addition to occlusion of granular pores by extraneous materials owing to
possible enzymatic degradation and production of secondary metabolites. Modified starches registered two-fold improvement
in storage modulus as compared to that of native starches. From the study of second derivative of the mass loss against temperature,
two thermal transitions were also identified in modified starches. X-ray diffraction analyses showed that crystalline regions
of the starch granules remained intact after the modification. It is proposed that the second phase transition potentially
corresponds to modified amylose fractions and/or exopolysaccharides produced by the fungi. 相似文献
In this study we investigated the use of activated carbon (AC) as a soil amendment for reducing bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Artificial soil was contaminated with PCBs and used in bioaccumulation experiments fresh or after aging for 19 months. PCB bioaccumulation in earthworms was reduced by 68% when AC was placed as a layer without mixing and by 94% when AC was manually mixed into the soil. Aging of the same AC mixed soil for 19 months resulted in an overall reduction of 99% in PCB biouptake. AC-treated aged soil also showed two orders of magnitude lower equilibrium aqueous concentrations of PCBs compared to untreated aged soils. The findings from this study indicate that application of engineered sorbents like AC to PCB impacted soils may greatly reduce PCB uptake at the base of the terrestrial food chain. 相似文献
