Since the early 1970s, it has been known that exposure of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) to a variety of microorganisms results in biodegradation of this polymer. Besides the ability of PCL to be utilized as a carbon source for microorganisms, it has been demonstrated that, during degradation, carbon dioxide is generated. Soil burial and compost experiments have shown that chain scission of the PCL backbone occurs, mechanical properties of articles prepared from PCL are reduced rapidly, and significant weight loss occurs in a short time period. This inherent biodegradability of PCL, in combination with its ability to be converted by conventional extrusion equipment, allows for the preparation of biodegradable articles that have utility.Paper presented at the Bio/Environmentally Degradable Polymer Society—Third National Meeting, June 6–8, 1994, Boston, Massachusetts.  相似文献

Using a sample of hospital employees this study addressed whether job satisfaction mediates the relationship between absenteeism predictors and absenteeism and how well absenteeism predictors explained different measures of absenteeism. The results suggest that job satisfaction is not a mediator and that the independent variables explain more variance in records‐based time lost than in self‐reported time lost or self‐reported absence frequency. Implications are discussed in terms of using job satisfaction as a mediator as well as the viability of alternative measures of absenteeism. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper introduces a methodology for estimating gridded fields of total and speciated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations for time periods and regions not covered by observational data. The methodology is based on performing long-term regional scale meteorological and air quality simulations and then integrating these simulations with available observational data. To illustrate this methodology, we present an application in which year-round simulations with a meteorological model (the National Center for Atmospheric Research/Penn State Mesoscale Model, hereafter referred to as MM5) and a photochemical air quality model (the Community Multiscale Air Quality Model, hereafter referred to as CMAQ) have been performed over the northeastern United States for 1988–2005. Model evaluation results for total PM2.5 mass and individual species for the time period from 2000 to 2005 show that model performance varies by species, season, and location. Therefore, an approach is developed to adjust CMAQ output with factors based on these three variables. The adjusted model values for total PM2.5 mass for 2000–2005 are compared against independent measurements not utilized for the adjustment approach. This comparison reveals that the adjusted model values have a lower root mean square error (RMSE) and higher correlation coefficients than the original model values. Furthermore, the PM2.5 estimates from these adjusted model values are compared against an alternate method for estimating historic PM2.5 values that is based on PM2.5/PM10 ratios calculated at co-located monitors. Results reveal that both methods yield estimates of historic PM2.5 mass that are broadly consistent; however, the adjusted CMAQ values provide greater spatial coverage and information for PM2.5 species in addition to total PM2.5 mass. Finally, strengths and limitations of the proposed approach are discussed in the context of potential uses of this method.  相似文献

Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) were implanted with acoustic telemetry transmitters (n = 42) and monitored within a stationary acoustic receiver array (n = 53 receivers) in The Bahamas to examine residency, seasonal movements, and habitat use. Barracuda were monitored for up to 980 days and remained within the array area ~33% (median value) of the time. Most tagged barracuda were transient and would often disappear from the array for months at a time, particularly in the summer where they were usually last detected on receivers located in deeper shelf habitats, and then return at other times in the year. Habitat use across the footprint of the array differed, with most detections occurring in coastal areas and comparatively fewer in deeper mosaic or shelf habitats. Linear home range estimates revealed that some barracuda moved >12 km within a single day and are capable of migrating >100 km to other islands in the Bahamian Archipelago. Our results provide some of the first telemetry data for this apex marine predatory fish and the first reliable information on the residency and localized seasonal movements of adult great barracuda in the coastal waters of the Western Atlantic.  相似文献

The effect of anthropogenic landscape change on disease in wildlife populations represents a growing conservation and public health concern. Red colobus monkeys (Procolobus rufomitratus), an endangered primate species, are particularly susceptible to habitat alteration and have been the focus of a great deal of disease and ecological research as a result. To infer how landscape changes can affect host and parasite dynamics, a spatially explicit agent-based model is created to simulate movement and foraging of this primate, based on a resource landscape estimated from extensive plot-derived tree population data from Kibale National Park, Uganda. Changes to this resource landscape are used to simulate effects of anthropogenic forest change. With each change in the landscape, disease outcomes within the simulated red colobus population are monitored using a hypothetical microparasite with a directly transmitted life cycle. The model predicts an optimal distribution of resources which facilitates the spread of an infectious agent through the simulated population. The density of resource rich sites and the overall heterogeneity of the landscape are important factors contributing to this spread. The characteristics of this optimal distribution are similar to those of logged sections of forest adjacent to our study area.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to derive a land-use regression model to estimate on a geographical basis ambient concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. These estimates of concentrations of NO2 will be subsequently used to assess exposure in epidemiologic studies on the health effects of traffic-related air pollution. In May 2003, NO2 was measured for 14 consecutive days at 67 sites across the city using Ogawa passive diffusion samplers. Concentrations ranged from 4.9 to 21.2 ppb (median 11.8 ppb). Linear regression analysis was used to assess the association between logarithmic concentrations of NO2 and land-use variables derived using the ESRI Arc 8 geographic information system. In univariate analyses, NO2 was negatively associated with the area of open space and positively associated with traffic count on nearest highway, the length of highways within any radius from 100 to 750 m, the length of major roads within 750 m, and population density within 2000 m. Industrial land-use and the length of minor roads showed-no association with NO2. In multiple regression analyses, distance from the nearest highway, traffic count on the nearest highway, length of highways and major roads within 100 m, and population density showed significant associations with NO2; the best-fitting regression model had a R2 of 0.54. These analyses confirm the value of land-use regression modeling to assign exposures in large-scale epidemiologic studies.  相似文献

The skeletons of 3 gorgonian and 2 antipatharian corals were subjected to quantitative chemical analysis. Protein values ranged from 70.4 to 93.6%; ash from 3.0 to 19.4%; lipid from 0 to 8.4%; carbohydrate from 1.24 to 3.94% and halogen from 4.2 to 24.9% of the dry skeletal weight. Hydroxyproline and phenolic values were 0 to 3.0% and 11.6 to 25.0% of the protein, respectively. Lipid, present in 2 gorgonian species and 1 antipatharian, significantly decreased with age in all three cases. Glucose and galactose accounted for over 90%, and sialic acids for an additional 1 to 10%, of the carbohydrate in the gorgonian skeletons studied; the glucose content of the gorgonian skeleton decreased with age. The antipatharian skeletons possessed no glucose or galactose, but contained significant levels of amino sugars; the presence of chitin is confirmed. In the gorgonians, bromine and iodine, the predominant halogens, increased with skeletal age and were present in nearly equal amounts. Small amounts of bromine were found in the antipatharian skeletons, but very large amounts of iodine were found in older parts of the skeleton. The basal regions of both antipatharian species contained >23% by weight of iodine, the highest content of iodine yet recorded for any organism.  相似文献

Genetic disease is the leading cause of infant death in the United States, accounting for approximately 20% of annual infant mortality. Advances in genomic medicine and technological platforms have made possible low cost, pan-ethnic expanded genetic screening that enables obstetric care providers to offer screening for over 100 recessive genetic diseases. However, the rapid integration of genomic medicine into routine obstetric practice has raised some concerns about the practical implementation of such testing.
