In 2005, torrential rains associated with Hurricane Stan devastated farm systems in southern Mexico. We present a case study on the impacts of and responses to Hurricane Stan by coffee households in three communities in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, with the objective of illuminating the linkages between household vulnerability and resilience. We analyze data from 64 household surveys in a cluster analysis to link household impacts experienced to post-Stan adaptive responses and relate these results with landscape-level land-cover changes. The degree of livelihood change was most significant for land-constrained households whose specialization in coffee led to high exposure and sensitivity to Stan and little adaptive capacity. Across the sample, the role of coffee in livelihood strategies declined, as households sought land to secure subsistence needs and diversified economically after Stan. Nevertheless, livelihoods and landscape outcomes were not closely coupled, at least at the temporal and spatial scale of our analysis: We found no evidence of land-use change associated with farmers’ coping strategies. While households held strong attitudes regarding effective resource management for risk reduction, this knowledge does not necessarily translate into capacities to manage resilience at broader scales. We argue that policy interventions are needed to help materialize local strategies and knowledge on risk management, not only to allow individual survival but also to enhance resilience at local, community and landscape scales. 相似文献

The pressure exerted by shallow water hydrothermal vents on edible gastropods and their cellular responses triggered by these stresses are almost unknown. The aims of this study were to evaluate the bioavailability of metals in the Macaronesian endemic limpet Patella candei gomesii living close to shallow water hydrothermal vents, and the structural differences in their digestive gland as well as the levels of apoptosis in that organ. Limpets were sampled in four sites, two with the presence of hydrothermalism and the other two without it. Whole body concentrations of several metals (Ca, Cd, Cs, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, and Zn) were obtained, morphometry analysis of the digestive gland and TUNEL test for apoptosis were also performed. Results revealed that the presence of shallow water hydrothermal vents is a source of chronic metal stress to limpets, imposing modifications in the morphometry and cell composition of the digestive gland of those limpets that may constitute cell and tissue adaptations to the environment they live in. This study sets up new baseline data for further research on the influence of shallow water hydrothermal vents over communities living in these habitats. 相似文献

An understanding of the trophic organization patterns of tropical littoral fish assemblages can contribute to the knowledge
of key ecosystem processes while simultaneously assisting to validate large-scale biogeographic patterns (i.e. latitudinal
patterns in fish herbivory). In the present study, the diets of eight fish species inhabiting the tide pools of a rocky shore
on the western coast of Colombia (tropical eastern Pacific) are documented. A total of 17 prey items were identified, with
a major representation (average percent by weight) of crabs and macroalgae items in the guts of all species. Small crustacean
prey items (crabs, shrimps, copepods and amphipods) dominated the diets of most species, but consumption of macroalgae and
diatoms by a significant number of species was also observed. We identified four significant trophic guilds within the assemblage
using multivariate techniques (cluster analysis and nMDS): an omnivorous guild, consisting of Malacoctenus zonifer and the smallest size class of Bathygobius ramosus; a small-prey carnivorous guild, consisting of the intermediate size classes of B. ramosus and the smallest size class of Gobiesox adustus; a large-prey carnivorous guild, consisting of both largest size classes of B. ramosus and G. adustus; and an herbivorous guild consisting of Abudefduf concolor, A. troschelii and Chaenomugil proboscideus. The diet of two species slightly overlapped those of the rest of the assemblage and did not conform to any guild (Echidna nocturna and Halichoeres aestuaricola). It is hypothesised that guild formation may be a consequence of aggregation of species at abundant resources in the intertidal
zone rather than a direct consequence of inter-specific competition. Ontogenetic changes in diets were observed in two resident
species of the assemblage (B. ramosus and G. adustus). The latitudinal trend for herbivory inside this tropical assemblage is discussed in comparison with similar temperate studies

We explored the potential of using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), a non-destructive technique, to assess elemental contents in dolphin bones. Specimens were deposited in museum collections, and prepared by different methodologies. Fifty eight Commerson’s dolphins (Cephalorhynchus c. commersonii) chevron bones and 24 Franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) were analysed. The EDX allowed us to detect the following elements: Ca, P, Na, Mg, Fe, K, Zn, S, Cl and Al; and quantify their proportion (weight percent of element). Principal components analysis differentiates two groups according to the cleaning procedures applied, supporting that cleaning methods could influence the chemical integrity of bone. No significant age-dependent increase was found for elements analysed in species, and no significant differences were found between sex and physical maturity stages. Alternative assessment was made through atomic absorption spectrophotometry, providing quantitative information on the principal elements in bones (Ca, P, Mg, Na, Fe and Zn) and allowing comparisons with other studies. A standard protocol for bone cleaning and conditioning is needed to exclude any effect on the mineral integrity of calcified tissue. This would enable future comparative studies on the bone mineral matrix over time housed in natural history museums or other scientific collections. 相似文献

The recent global financial crisis has highlighted the need for balanced and efficient investments in the reduction of the greenhouse effect caused by emissions of CO2 on a global scale. In a previous paper, the authors proposed a mathematical model describing the dynamic relation of CO2 emission with investment in reforestation and clean technology. An efficient allocation of resources to reduce the greenhouse effect has also been proposed. Here, this model is used to provide estimates of the investments needed in land reforestation and in the adoption of clean technologies for an optimum emission and abatement of CO2, for the period of 1996–2014. The required investments are computed to minimize deviations with respect to the emission targets proposed in the Kyoto Protocol for European Countries. The emission target can be achieved by 2014 with investments in reforestation peaking in 2004, and a reduction of the expected GDP of 42%, relative to 2006. Investments in clean technology should increase between 2008 and 2010 with maximum transfer figures around 70 million American dollars. Total (cumulative) costs are, however, relatively high depending on the price of carbon abatement and the rate at which the expected CO2 concentration in the atmosphere should be reduced. Results highlight the advantages for policy makers to be able to manage investments in climate policy more efficiently, controlling optimum transfers based on a portfolio of actions that tracks a pre-defined CO2 concentration target. 相似文献
