Intact young males of Ophryotrocha puerilis Clap. Mecz. which are about to reach the female phase are capable of producing oocytes even under conditions of fasting. Intact isolated females may change sex under fasting conditions; their oocytes are not shed but resorbed. Decerebrated males which are about to reach the female phase at the moment of decerebration are unable to develop oocytes. Decerebrated females begin earlier with the production of spermatozoa than females under fasting conditions. The oocytes of decapitated females are either resorbed (young females with oocytes ranging in diameter up to 60 μm), or shed in egg masses capable of development after fertilization (older females with oocytes of 90 μm diameter or more). The effect of decerebration on females is compensated completely by implantation of isolated prostomia from female donors. Decerebrated males with implanted isolated prostomia from female donors immediately start oocyte production; these oocytes are not shed. In the majority of cases, decerebrated females change to the male phase after implantation of prostomia isolated from male donors. The mutual influence of a pair depends on direct contact of the partners. In isolated females, anterior fragments, consisting of prostomia and some segments, may induce change of sex and shedding of oocytes. On the other hand, intact females may induce sex reversal in anterior fragments. Even isolated prostomia from female donors may induce change of sex in intact females. A possible influence of intact females upon isolated prostomia was not found. Intact females and decerebrated females with implanted prostomia from female donors exhibit no mutual influence when placed together.  相似文献

Evaluated and compared are the results of various mathematical models to data from the uptake of methyl mercury in bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus). Data were obtained from the direct uptake of methyl mercury from water in bluegill at 9°C and at a CH3HgCl concentration of 0.2 ppb. The models considered are: (1) linear uptake relationship; (2) first-order kinetics, one-compartment or single-exponential model; (3) combination of first-order kinetics and the linear uptake relationship, designated as slope-exponential model; (4) two-compartment or double-exponential model; (5) three-compartment model, including a storage compartment for the build up of contaminant, designated as storage model; (6) three-compartment model, allowing two routes of elimination, designated the “Y” model; (7) an empirical uptake relationship having the form of a rectangular hyperbola.A comparison of the nonlinear models showed that the empirical model had fewer convergence problems in obtaining parameter estimates and its parameter values had less variation. The best fit was made by the “Y” model, the empirical model gave one of the smaller values of the residual mean squares, and other nonlinear models had computational convergence difficulties. The lack of computational problems and the comparitively small residual mean squares resulted in the selection of and the preference for the empirical model for use in describing the individual and interactive effects of temperature and methyl mercury concentration on the direct uptake of methyl mercury from water by bluegill.  相似文献

Chemical composition was determined for Sergestes corniculum, S. grandis, S. japonicus, S. robustus and S. splendens collected in December, April and September. Protein content expressed as percent of dry weight varied from 65.7% in S. splendens to 46.8% in S. japonicus. Significant differences were noted among species in Apria and September, with highest protein values in April in S. corniculum, s. robustus and S. splendens. Lipid content expressed as percent dry weight ranged from 12.6% in S. robustus to 8.3% in s. splendens. Differences in percent lipid among species were significant in December and September with highest values in s. robustus and lowest values in S. splendens. Carbohydrate content varied from 1.0% in S. grandis to 2.5% in S. splendens. Ash and chitin were only determined for S. corniculum, S. grandis and S. splendens. Although protein and lipid content were correlated with size of shrimp analyzed, protein and lipid values in S. splendens, a species known to occur near the surface only at night, appeared to be related to seasonal zooplankton abundance in near-surface waters. Differences in lipid and protein content among species suggest that higher lipid and lower protein content occurs in species with shorter ranges of diel vertical migration.  相似文献

The study was carried out in the neritic and estuarine waters of Porto Novo, Coromandel Coast, Bay of Bengal, India during the period January, 1960 to December, 1967. The average displacement volume of plankton usually varied between 2 and 4 c2/m2. During summer, with a season of high plankton productivity, the average plankton displacement volume rose to 8 c2/m3. Generally speaking, the average zooplankton density (standing crop) was usually between 80,000 and 100,000 organisms/m3, of which copepods alone comprised usually between 70,000 and 90,000 organisms/m3. The average copepod density per sample varied from 30,000 to 50,000 organisms/m3. However, in the summer months, the copepod density was usually not less than 100,000 organisms/m3; in some years this was even higher (from 125,000 to 170,000 organisms/m3). Copepods comprised between 80 and 95% of the zooplankton population. The maximum non-copepod population in the zooplankton seldom reached 30%, was ofter below 25%, and usually less than 20%. During the period March to October (in some years as early as February, and in some years up to November), either an increasing or a steady trend of plankton production was evident. Gut analyses of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Müller) demonstrated that perennial phaeophytes, mostly fucoids and Alaria esculenta, were predominant in the diet. Ephemeral species, coralline algae and animals, were consumed in smaller amounts when available. Grazing by the urchins is evidently responsible for the dearth of non-coralline sublittoral algae in Newfoundland waters. The seasonal ontogenetic migration of the Arctic copepod Calanus hyperboreus was described from surface-to-bottom hauls in the central Greenland Sea Gyre (GSG) and in the Westspitsbergen Current (WSC). All stages except females spent the winter below 500 m in the GSG and below 1000 m in the WSC. Seasonal ascent begins in April, and descent in July. For the C.␣hyperboreus population an active downward transport of 8.1 g m−2 dry weight during 8 months of overwintering was estimated, similar to flux rates of particulate matter in sediment traps. Seasonal distribution of biomass was determined from weight measurements of single stages. Annual means varied from 4.0 to 9.2 g m−2 in two different years in the GSG and were 1.1 in 1 year in the WSC. The life cycle in the Greenland Sea was reconstructed from field data on stage composition, vertical distribution, reproduction, and moult cycle phase from tooth development of CV. Laboratory experiments were conducted on the moulting of CIV and CV in fall. A 3-year (males) and 3- to 4-year (females) life cycle is proposed for the GSG and 2 to 3 years for the WSC. However, the small number of young larvae and the incomplete spring ascent by older copepodites observed in the WSC cast doubt on the reproductive success in the WSC. A suite of physiological strategies and adaptations performed by the developmental stages support survival of this species in harsh environments. Stimulation of photosynthate excretion from zooxanthellae and free-living algae by tissue homogenate of several bivalves was studied. Mantle tissue homogenate of Tridacna derasa enhanced 10-to 15-fold excretion of photosynthetically fixed carbon from freshly isolated zooxanthellae within 2 h incubation. Maximum carbon excretion was 35 to 45% of the total carbon fixed. This excretion stimulating activity was detected in the homogenates of the mantle, adductor muscle, gill, and kidney. However, no excretion stimulating activity was detected in the haemolymph. The excretion stimulation activity of mantle homogenate, directed against freshly isolated zooxanthellae from T. derasa, was higher in bivalves belonging to the Tridacnidae (T. derasa, T. crocea, T. maxima, T. squamosa, Hippopus hippopus) than in the Cardiidae (Fragum fragum, F. mundum, F. unedo), non-symbiotic bivalves (Mytilus edulis, Meretrix lusoria, Ruditapes philippinarum) or gastropods (Umbonium giganteum, Turbo argyrostoma). The mantle homogenate of T. derasa enhanced photosynthate excretion by free-living algae belonging to the Dinophyceae (Prorocentrum micans, Amphidinium carterae, and Heterocapsa triquetra) but did not enhance its excretion by free-living algae belonging to the Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Rhodophyceae, Prasinophyceae, and Haptophyceae. T. derase used in this study originated from Belau (Palau). T. crocea, T. squamosa, T. maxima, H. hippopus and F. unedo were collected at Ishigaki Island in Okinawa in 1992. Parental investment (PI) theory assumes that optimal parental investment is a function of expected cost/benefit ratio of current versus future reproduction. This study tests the prediction of PI theory that in a species with high adult mortality, paying of reproductive costs can be induced or prevented by manipulation of brood reproductive value (RV). Analysis of recruitment rates in a 10-year study of great tits (Parus major) showed that brood RV was affected by both fledgling number and quality (body mass and tarsus length). A 4-year brood size manipulation experiment (±2 hatchlings) resulted in reduction of fledgling quality in enlarged versus control and reduced broods, while the fledgling number did not differ between manipulation categories due to increase of nestling mortality with brood size manipulation score. Hence, the experiment resulted in reduction of brood RVs in enlarged broods. Females rearing enlarged broods survived better than those with control and reduced broods, while male survival was not affected by the experiment. This indicates that paying the survival costs for reproduction was a part of normal life history for studied female great tits, and that decisions whether to pay this cost were based on the estimation of brood RV. Recruitment rate was lowest (but extremely male-biased) in reduced broods, while control and increased broods did not differ in the number of locally recaptured offspring.  相似文献

The aim of this contribution was the ecological characterization of 32 selected terrestrial Central-European enchytraeid species regarding factors of land use, pH-value, grain-size distribution, humus form, and soil moisture. The background of this characterization is generated by the so-called Soil Biological Site-Classification (abbreviated BBSK), a concept for the soil-biological assessment of soils. The crucial point within this concept is the comparison of the theoretically expected soil biocoenosis with the biocoenosis actually detected at a single site. Intending to obtain a simplified management of the parameters mentioned, these were each divided into three to five classes. The data-basis for the ecological characterization was formed by analysing suitable sources of literature with both biological and abiotic data given for one site. The result of the analysis was the frequency of a single species regarding the classes of the viewed soil parameters. On the basis of these results, the enchytraeid coenosis of three adjacent Bavarian sites of different use was predicted exemplarily and the enchytraeid community of these sites was investigated. The comparison of the predicted and detected coenoses showed that the sureness of the forecast varied between the different land uses: for wood and grassland, the prognosis was very precise and satisfactory, whereas the forecast for the agricultural site differed quite extensively. This was mainly due to the narrow data basis for agricultural sites.  相似文献
