A resource constraint alters the profit maximizing decision rule for a natural resource producer. Stich a producer also responds differently to common policy instruments. For a zero rate of discount, it is shown that a franchise (lump sum), severance (ad valorem or unit), or profit tax result, respectively, is increased, unchanged, and unchanged output. These results are generalized to the case when the rate of discount is nonzero and tax rates vary over time. A tax-subsidy scheme for guaranteeing the equality of optimal social and private rates of depletion is presented for a case where these rates diverge. 相似文献

The Red Sea nudibranch Hexabranchus sanguineus, rare in this region, was found in the Gulf of Aqaba together with a pair of commensal shrimp, Periclimenes imperator. The behaviour of the shrimp, especially as regards their adaptation to the host, was studied in the field and in an aquarium. The shrimp live on the sea slug, feeding on particles adhering to its mucous surface; they move on it even when it is swimming. The shrimp's colour is well adapted to that of the host. The observed specimens never left a healthy host willingly; when, in aquarium experiments, various red substrates or mucous sea cucumbers were offered beside H. sanguineus, the shrimp always chose the nudibranch. However, dead or injured and motionless slugs were abandoned. Two days after the death of a nudibranch, its commensal shrimp accepted the brown synaptid Euapta godeffroyi as host; on a previous occasion, a shrimp was found living on this latier species in the reef. The adaptation of P. imperator to living on the temporarily free-swimming H. sanguineus apparently represents a special evolutionary stage compared with that of other members of this family, which are mostly commensal with sessile hosts. Only palaemonid cleaner-shrimps feed briefly from free-swimming substrates.

Species-specific rates of photosynthetic carbon uptake (P), chlorophyll a content and P versus irradiance (P-I), have been measured for cells of Pyrocystis noctiluca and P. fusiformis isolated from natural populations collected in the euphotic zone within and below the surface mixed layer in the Sargasso Sea. These same measurements and the assay for ribulose bis-phosphate carboxylase (RuBP-Case), have been made for cultures of P. noctiluca in a 12 h L: 12 h D photoperiod at 9 different constant or at changing light intensities. In nature chl a cell-1 was constant throughout the euphotic zone. The photosynthetic capacity (Pmax), of cells captured below the surface mixed layer was lower by a factor of 10 compared with cells collected from the surface mixed layer. The Pmax for P. noctiluca collected and incubated within the surface mixed layer was the same as for cell cultures grown under high light, non nutrient-limiting conditions, suggesting that photosynthesis in the natural system was not nutrient limited. In laboratory cultures under constant low light intensities, chl a cell-1 increased by a factor of 5 while both Pmax and RuBPCase activity decreased by a factor of ca 4 compared with high light intensities. In changing light intensities both Pmax and RuBPCase activities were decreased by factors of 4 during low light intervals while chl a cell-1 approached a constant intermediate value. The change in chl a cell-1 in response to prolonged exposure to constant low light intensities was first order with a rate constant of 0.33 d-1. For all irradiance conditions in culture, the P-I dependence could be described by the simple Michaelis-Menten formula. The ratio of Pmax to KI, (the light intensity where P=Pmax/2) was a constant with a Coefficient of Variation of 12%: The constancy of this ratio, the parallel changes in RuBPCase activity with Pmax and the constant chl a cell-1 in the Sargasso Sea imply that for P. noctiluca and presumably P. fusiformis in nature, a dark enzymatic step rather than changes in photosynthetic pigment concentrations may regulate the photosynthetic capacity in the changing photic environment.Contribution no. 1141 from McCollum-Pratt Institute and Department of Biology, The Johns Hopkins University. We used a combination of satellite telemetry, archival and conventional tags to show that white sharks made broad-scale movements consistent with mixing of the population across their entire Australasian range. The capture of one of these sharks in New Zealand, some 3,550 km from the point of tagging in South Australia, provides further confirmation that white sharks sometimes move into open ocean waters and cross deep ocean basins. However, most movements were confined to shelf waters, generally in areas of less than 100 m depth and in some cases into waters of less than 5 m depth. Sharks showed considerable plasticity in swimming patterns, which included many of the behaviours reported for other species. One of the archival-tagged sharks showed separate periods of distinct swimming behaviour as it moved into different habitats and travelled between them. The changes in swimming behaviour were abrupt and suggested rapid switching of hunting strategies for different prey types in these habitats. All tracked sharks showed both prolonged periods of directional swimming in coastal waters at swimming speeds of 2–3 km h−1 as well as temporary residency in particular regions. Movements of tagged white sharks, together with data from shark control programs and bycatch records, suggest a seasonal movement northward along the east coast of Australia during the autumn–winter months and south in spring–early summer. The consistency of paths taken by white sharks in Australian waters suggests that they may follow common routes or “highways” in some areas. If so, identifying such areas may assist in reducing interactions with fishing operations and thus reduce bycatch. 相似文献

The distribution of the cladoceran Podon polyphemoides (Leuckart) in the Chesapeake Bay (USA) estuarine system was determined by a quantitative pump sampling method, and the patterns of abundance were correlated with temperature and salinity distributions. The species was seasonally recurrent, with distinct population maxima in the central portion of the bay. Population densities in excess of 60,000 podonids/m3 have been recorded. The podonids first appeared in the spring in the shallow tributaries, when water temperatures near the bottom reached 6°C. The vernal populations disappeared when summer temperatures exceeded 27°C, but reappeared in the fall as the water cooled. The species was euryhaline and eurythermal in its distribution, but the greatest concentrations were attained within relatively narrow zones of temperatures between 11o and 26°C, and salinities between 8 and 18. The production of males, sexual females and sexual eggs occurred both in the spring and the fall between the thermal limits of 11o and 17°C. 相似文献

While examining historical data on dissolved oxygen in the Canary Current area and the Central Atlantic Ocean (areas of activity of the UNDP/FAO Regional Fisheries Survey in West Africa), a quite different pattern of distribution was found in the dissolved oxygen/water temperature relationship in two adjacent Marsden squares (MS)1, 074 and 038. Not only were the dissolved oxygen values in MS 038 considerably lower than in MS 074 but, in the former square, the oxgen/temperature distribution showed 2 dissolved oxygen minima, the latter only 1 minimum. In MS 335, situated below the Equator, near the African coast, the oxygen/temperature distribution differs from the two former squares in that the dissolved oxygen value decreased steadily, and no oxygen minimum was found down to a depth where the water temperature was 6°C. 相似文献

D'Obbigny, 1826 (Foraminifera) was subdivided into two groups which were cultivated for 5 months, one at 300 lux, the other at 600 lux. Nourishment was provided by symbiotic photosynthesizing algae. The 300-lux group added 1 whorl, the 600-lux group added 1/2 a whorl during the experiment, suggesting that the first group was nearer the optimum for growth than the second. Growth rates reacted but slowly to changes in environmental conditions. Also, specimens within the same culture dish showed great differences in response. In the 600-lux group, many specimens ceased to grow entirely, while others continued. Cessation of growth tends to produce a rounded test shape, by filling-in of the apertural angle, while rapid growth tends to be correlated with flaring tests (i.e., tests with an open spiral). In addition, there is a trend toward increased flaring during normal ontogenetic development. Shell damage is greater in rapidly growing individuals; walls are apparently thicker in slowly growing and in resting individuals. Ecological interpretation of morphological characteristics is hampered by: (1) a lag effect between growth response and environmental change; (2) slowing or termination of growth under stressful conditions with corresponding minor changes in morphology; (3) great variation in response between sibling individuals within the same culture dish; (4) aging effects. 相似文献

During two periods (1 to 15 March and 3 to 17 April, 1969), the R.V. “Jean Charcot” accomplished hydrological, chemical, and biological observations in the northern portion of the Western Mediterranean Sea. The main aim was to study the influence of the intensive vertical mixing of water masses on primary and secondary productions during winter. Earlier work in this area had revealed, in the offshore region, relatively large biomasses and high production rates during spring; considering the low potential fertility of Mediterranean waters, this finding may be explained by the effective vertical transport of nutrients upwards to the photic zone. The present paper discusses the hydrological features and the distribution of nutrients (phosphates and nitrates), in these areas, where, in winter, formation of deep water occurs. Observations were made down to 1,000 m on a grid of stations centred at 42°N; 5° E (“région provençale”) and another series of stations in the region “Corse-Côte d'Azur”. These two areas are characterized by cyclonic gyres, in which each centre shows a sector of high surface density (σ t > 29.00). The surface mixed layer encountered is not deeper than 100 m; however, the Medoc Group (1970) has described formation of a homogeneous layer down to more than 1000 m. Many well-mixed water columns (maximum temperature and salinity at any depth do not exceed 13°C and 38.45‰, respectively) remain and occupy the western portion of the high surface density area; everywhere, the Mediterranean 3-layer system (superficial, intermediate and deep waters), more or less affected by mixing, remains well developed in the coastal region, and especially in the region of Côte d'Azur and Corsica. At some places, relatively high surface temperature (>13°C) associated with high salinity shows that the intermediate water fraction reaches the surface not only by direct vertical mixing, but also by any other dynamic lifting process, which constitutes another way of nutrient transport to the photic layer. The highest surface nutrient (0.3μ atg/l P?PO4; 5 μ atg/l N?NO3) and the lowest surface oxygen content (saturation <90%) are encountered in the mixed area; they are the best indicators of recently upwelled water. The surface layer around the cyclonic area is characterized by the low nutrient content of water of Atlantic origin. The lower salinity (<38%) of this water does not allow deep vertical mixing. During 3 to 17 April, 1969, the survey carried out on the same grid and sections reveals heating effects on all surface waters; the resulting stability in the most superficial layer accomodates the general spring bloom of phytoplankton. Nutrient consumption by photosynthesis in the upper 100 m layer of the surveyed area south of Marseilles was calculated to be: 129.1×106 g-at P?PO4 per 16,000 km2 per month, converted on the atomic basis of P:C=1:106 represents almost 75% of the carbon production obtained by 14C-uptake measurements. 相似文献

Cellular freezing and chilling resistances of different marine bivalve species have been measured comparatively, using isolated pieces of gill tissues. The species-specific resistance values correspond to the ecological behaviour and the geographical distribution of the species. Among marine animals from subarctic and boreal regions, cellular freezing resistance is significantly higher in species living, during the whole year, in the upper littoral than in bottom dwellers or sublittoral forms. Tissues of tropical littoral bivalves are very sensitive to freezing. Similar responses are obtained in deepwater species of the temperate zone. Studies on geographically separated populations of species from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean demonstrate small differences in cellular freezing resistance; no genetically fixed distinctions could be recognized. Among species within the same littoral habitat, those suffering from mass mortalities in extremely severe winters also exhibit comparatively lower cellular chilling and freezing resistances. In littoral bivalves from normal sea water, considerable seasonal variations of cellular freezing resistance occur; such variations are very small in specimens from brackisk waters. Maximum freezing resistance results from adaptation to low temperature combined with high salivity. The adaptation time required for reaching the final level of resistance depends on temperature and salinity. Also, the considerable increases in cellular freezing resistance caused by exposure to air, or to oxygen-deficient water, or by different organic compounds, are modified by temperature and salinity conditions during pretreatment. The subtropical-tropical species Chione cancellata, exhibits “meaningful” adaptation of cellular chilling resistance when the adaptation temperature is changed from 10° to 23.5°C; however, no comprehensible change in cellular freezing resistance occurs at the same time. Increased calcium contents of the external medium affect cellular chilling and freezing resistances of marine bivalves differently. Quick effluxes of aldolase (from cytoplasm) and of acid phosphatase (from lysosomes) after freezing and thawing of isolated gills indicate damage to membranes before cellular injuries are recognized by microscopical observations. We describe a portable, non-motorized device for delivering a tracer dye into seawater under field conditions. Dye is ejected at a constant flow rate over a period of tens of minutes. The ejector works in a wide range of ambient pressures without external energy requirements. The flow rate is adjusted simply by varying the length of the delivery tube. The dye streams permitted observations of the upcurrent and downcurrent flow regimes for a filter-feeding crinoid (Comanthus bennetti) living at a depth of 8 m on a coral reef. The results indicate that the crinoid may enhance the rate of particle capture by changing the scale of turbulence in the water passing through the mesh of the filtration fan. 相似文献
