Nitrogen (N) remaining as inorganic ('mineral') soil N at crop harvest (N(minH)) contributes to nitrate leaching. N(minH) data from 20 (grass) and 78 (maize) experiments were examined to identify main determinants of N(minH). N-rate (A) explained 51% (grass) and 34% (maize) of the variance in N(minH). Best models included in addition crop N-offtake (U), offtake in unfertilised plots (U(0)), and N(minH) in unfertilised plots (N(minH,0)) and then explained up to 75% of variance. At low N-rates where apparent N recovery rho keeps to its initial value rho(ini), N(minH) keeps to its base level N(minH,0). At N-rates that exceed the value A(crit) where rho drops below rho(ini), N(minH) rises above N(minH,0) by an amount proportional to (rho(ini)-rho)A. About 80% of (rho(ini)-rho)A was found as N(minH,) in grass as well as in maize. The fraction (1-rho(ini))A does not appear to contribute to N(minH) at low N-rates (A< or =A(crit)) or at high N-rates (A>A(crit)). 相似文献

Zoobenthos as indicators of ecological status in coastal brackish waters: a comparative study from the Baltic Sea 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A new method for classifying soft-bottom zoobenthic assemblages along the Finnish coasts (northern Baltic Sea) is presented and tested against traditional physicochemical monitoring data in the complex Archipelago Sea. Although multivariate methods for assessing the state of the marine environment have become widely used, few numerical indices can operate over a wide salinity range. We compare indices currently in use and propose a new index, BBI (brackish water benthic index), for the low-saline and species-poor Baltic coastal waters. BBI offers a salinity-corrected tool for classification of the soft-bottom zoobenthos under the demands of the European Union Water Framework Directive. 相似文献

Fifteen bottled mineral waters purchased at random all over Turkey were analyzed for their chemical composition by OPTIMA-2000
ICP-AES Perkin Elmer techniques. Results show a wide spread in the chemical specification of these mineral waters, with differences
in chemical composition observed in the regions being due to the geological environment and the majority of bottled mineral
waters exceeding the pH limit of Turkish drinking water standards. When the concentrations of elements are evaluated, it can
readily be seen that generally there are three types of mineral water in Turkey. The concentrations of Al, B, Ba, Cd, Cu,
Cr, Fe, Mn Pb and Zn in mineral water were compared with the limits established by the Turkish Standard for Natural Mineral
Waters (Turkish Official Gazette 2004); water standards prepared by World Health Organization (2006) and the United States of America Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) drinking water standards (1993). Such a comparison shows that, except for Ba and Mn, the concentrations of the other heavy metals are lower than the limit

Shewanella putrefaciens 200, resistant to high concentration of Hg(II), was selected for co-removal of mercury and selenium from aqueous medium. Biogenic Hg(0) reduced from Hg(II) by S. putrefaciens 200 was captured into extracellular amorphous selenium nanospheres, resulting in the formation of stable HgSe nanoparticles. This bacterial reduction could be a new strategy for mercury removal from aquatic environments without secondary pollution of mercury methylation or Hg(0) volatilization. 相似文献

Previous studies on the intertidal copepod Tigriopus japonicus have demonstrated that it is a suitable model species for the assessment of acute toxicities of marine pollutants. In order to standardize T. japonicus for use in environmental risk assessment involving whole life cycle exposure, we tested nine pollutants for their effects on growth and reproduction during a two-generation life cycle exposure test. Nauplii (F 0) were exposed to a range of concentrations of each chemical in a static renewal culture system. Broods of the second generation (F1) were subsequently exposed to the same concentrations for one full life cycle. Of the seven traits (nauplius phase, development time, survival, sex ratio, number of clutch, nauplii per clutch and fecundity), only the length of the nauplius phase and development time showed a greater sensitivity to chemical exposure. Between the two sensitive traits, the period of the nauplius phase was more sensitive than cohort generation time. Biocides significantly increased the maturation period of nauplii as well as copepodids in F 0 generation. In this study, it was demonstrated that T. japonicus could also be used in reproduction and life cycle tests and it provides an opportunity for testing the chronic and subchronic toxic effects of marine pollutants. Further validation and harmonization in a multi-centric study involving other laboratories of the region will strengthen its use as a supplement to existing model species. 相似文献

In Taiwan, the authorities have spent years working on remedying polluted rivers. Generally, the remediation planning works
are divided into two phases. During the first phase, the allowed pollution discharge quantity and abatement quantity of each
drainage zone, including the assimilative capacity, are generated based on the total river basin. In the second phase, the
abatement action plans for each pollution source in each drainage zone are respectively devised by the related organizations
based on the strategies generated during the first phase. However, the effectiveness of linking the two phases is usually
poor. Highly integrated performances are not always achieved because the separate two-phase method does not take system and
management thinking into consideration in the planning stage. This study pioneers the use of the Managing for Results (MFR)
method in planning strategies and action plans for river water quality management. A sustainable management framework is proposed
based on the concept and method of MFR, Management Thinking, and System Analysis. The framework, consisting of planning, implementation,
and controlling stages, systematically considers the relationships and interactions among four factors: environment, society,
economy, and institution, based on the principles of sustainable development. Based on the framework, the Modified Bounded
Implicit Enumeration algorithm, which is used as a solving method, is combined with Visual Basic software and MS Excel to
develop a computer system for strategy planning. The Shetzu River, located in northern Taiwan, is applied as a case study.
According to the theoretical, practical, and regulatory considerations, the result-oriented objectives are defined to first
improve the pollution length of the Shetzu River in specific remediation periods to finally meet regulated water quality standards.
The objectives are then addressed as some of the constraints for the strategy planning model. The model objective is to pursue
the maximum assimilative capacity (environmental phase) subjected to the constraints of water quality standards (institutional
phase), social equity (social phase), and proper available technology (economic phase). The pollution quantity abatement and
allocation, which are named the top strategies, of each drainage zone for different scenarios can be obtained based on each
water quality standard. The middle as well as lower strategies and action plans, which consist of pollution quantity abatement
and allocation of each class (domestic, industrial, livestock, and non-point pollution sources) and their individual pollution
sources in each drainage zone, are then generated based on the top strategies. The performance indicators and measure plans
are proposed based on the action plans to promote the comprehensive effectiveness of river water quality management. The authorities
have begun to develop a budget based on the strategies and action plans developed in this study. The analytical results indicate
that the objectives, strategies, and action plans developed based on the sustainable management framework and strategy planning
system can effectively help the related authorities to fulfill the tasks of water quality management for a river basin. 相似文献

A new analytical technique based on DRIFTS spectroscopy has been developed for the specific and sensitive determination of size-fractionated wood dust from 37 mm glass fiber filter samples collected with the Respicon sampler. A translational diffuse reflectance apparatus was modified to accept filter samples by incorporating a special filter holder in the sample stage and a clockwork motor to drive the translational stage during infrared scanning, thus providing an average analysis across the filter face. Filter samples were pre-treated with ethyl acetate to uniformly redeposit dust onto the filter and extract potential chemical interferences. Two absorbance maxima (1251 and 1291 cm(-1)), corresponding to the cellulose content of the wood, were suitable for quantitation of wood dust. Analysis of seven species of wood at 1291 cm(-1) showed an equivalent quantitative response for all species except maple. The response at 1251 cm(-1) was more variable across species but more sensitive for the softwoods. There was a statistically significant effect of particle size on the analytical response, so that analytical standards should be matched to the samples in terms of particle size distribution. Analytical limit of detection was approximately 0.08 mg of wood dust per sample with overall precision of about 6%. Comparison of DRIFTS and gravimetric analyses of 51 pure wood dust samples ranging from about 0.2 to 2 mg yielded a slope of 1.08 and r2 equal to 0.9. Other particulate contaminants common in the industrial wood processing industry showed little or no interference with the determination of wood dust by this method. 相似文献

To simulate an acute exposure of Chinese cabbage and radish plants to airborne HTO, the potted plants were exposed to HTO vapor under semi-outdoor conditions for 1h at different times from the early to late growth stages. The plants were grown outdoors and the plant tritium was measured at the end of an exposure (h(0)) and at harvest. The leaf tissue free water tritium (TFWT) concentrations at h(0) were considerably lower than estimated equilibrium concentrations. In the leaves of Chinese cabbage, the exposure at the earlier growth stage generally ended with a higher TFWT concentration. Such a tendency was not apparent either in the leaves or roots of radish. On the other hand, the earlier stage exposure gave rise to lower TFWT concentrations at the harvest of both crops. For the OBT (organically bound tritium), however, the same occurred only in the Chinese cabbage leaves. During the period between the exposure and harvest, the TFWT concentrations reduced by factors of up to 1.1 x 10(6) for the Chinese cabbage leaves and 1.3 x 10(4) for the radish roots. Based on the activity ratios of OBT to TFWT at harvest, it is estimated that OBT mostly contributes much more to the ingestion dose than TFWT does. 相似文献
