Diversity trends in Neogene European ungulates and rodents: large-scale comparisons and perspectives
The ungulate and rodent fossil records are often used independently to understand mammalian evolutionary history. Few studies
have directly compared both records over long time periods and large geographic areas. Here, we compiled two datasets of European
fossil localities containing rodents and/or ungulates over 20 My (Early Miocene–Early Pliocene) and processed the data with
the same methodology. We counted the raw diversity and calculated a measure of evenness (Pielou’s index). After controlling
for potential biases on diversity estimators, we identify the evenness index as a more reliable estimator bringing interesting
insights into the way both mammal groups are structured by biotic or abiotic factors. In this study, we consider that an uneven
distribution of the species richness among families, when only some families successfully diversify within the “continental-scale
community”, represents a lower adaptability of this community to the environmental context. Pielou’s index is used to estimate
this adaptability through time. The responses of ungulates and rodents to environmental changes are very divergent, especially
facing the climatic changes known since the Middle Miocene. The general patterns suggest that rodent broad-scale assemblages
are affected by all kinds of perturbations, even short biotic and abiotic events, but show a better adaptability when facing
long-term abiotic changes. Unlike rodents, the ungulate assemblages show more stability in periods of relative environmental
stability but show less adaptability to long-term climatic changes. Life-history traits of mammals can help explain patterns
of diversity and biogeography at different spatial scales and may probably partly explain the opposite patterns evidenced

Storm Xynthia crossed France’s western coast between 28th February and 1st March 2010. It hit the Vendée and Charente-Maritime departments hardest, as storm surge flooded up to 23,000 ha of coastal agricultural areas (i.e. polders), causing severe damage to farming operations. However, farm-level damage in the aftermath of seawater flooding is an issue that has rarely been explored in the literature. Here we investigated the effects of storm Xynthia on agriculture at the farm scale. We focused on the case study of Saint Laurent de la Prée research farm, a mixed crop–livestock system that was severely hit. All damages were described and economic losses were quantified for the years 2010 and 2011. The results show numerous consequences of the storm in terms of crop and fodder production losses, but also farm infrastructure repairs, crop restoration and animal health problems. Economic damage costs were high, reaching €71,720 in 2010 (€500/ha flooded) and €56,195 (€390/ha) in 2011 for the case study farm. The discussion highlights the farm-level impacts of seawater flooding and the crucial factors that can explain the damage caused to agriculture by storm events in coastal areas. The results are also discussed in the wider context of global warming which is expected to cause sea level rise and more frequent storm events in the future. The vulnerability of coastal agricultural areas to storms thus exposes broader issues of coastal flooding risk management and specifically the allied protection–remediation–adaptation measures. The conclusions underline the need for future research to address prospective scenarios and subsequent adaptive strategies. 相似文献

This paper presents a technique for detection and location of leaks in a single pipe, by means of transient analysis, of hydrogen–natural gas mixtures flows. The method uses transient pressure waves initiated by the sudden closure of a downstream shut-off valve. The presence of a leak in a pipe partially reflects these pressure waves and allows for the location of the leak. Pressure waves are governed by two coupled non-linear, hyperbolic partial differential equations with pressure dependent coefficients. The fluid pressure and velocity are considered as two principal dependent variables. To determine the leak location, the mathematical formulation has been solved by the characteristics method of specified time intervals. The computed results describe the influence of the leak on pressure time-history and the effect of hydrogen mass fraction in the mixture on the leak discharge behaviour. The overtopping of port breakwaters may affect the assets located at the breakwater lee side. If adaptation measures are not taken, the sea level rise will increase the overtopping discharges putting those assets at significant risk. This study compares, at a regional scale, overtopping discharges over port breakwaters for three storm conditions (return periods of 1, 5 and 50 years) under present climate as well as for three scenarios of sea level rise based on recent projections. The results indicate that, for the worst storm and sea level rise conditions, the overtopping discharge would not be negligible (larger than 1 l/s/m) in 35 ports (84 %), in contrast to only 18 ports (42 %) being affected under present conditions. In addition, in 28 ports (65 %) the overtopping would be at least one order of magnitude larger than for present conditions. In the case of large storms, in 2 ports the overtopping discharge exceeds 200 l/s/m (the discharge that can initiate breakwater damage) under present conditions, while in the worst scenario of sea level rise the number of ports exceeding this value would be 7. On the other hand, the vulnerability of each port for which overtopping flow is greater than an acceptable discharge flux is assessed, and regional maps of vulnerability are plotted. For the worst storm conditions, 23 % of the Catalan ports have risks associated with overtopping under present climate conditions. The concept of CO2 chemo-absorption by sodium hydroxide in a wet scrubber followed by microalgae cultivation was used as a means to reduce the major greenhouse gas. A thermophilic and alkaline tolerable cyanobacterium named Thermosynechococcus CL-1 (TCL-1) was cultivated in continuous system, with a carbonate-bicarbonate buffer as carbon source. The effects of dissolved inorganic carbon (DICin) and nutrient levels in influent on cell mass productivity, DIC removal efficiency, and alkaline solution regeneration by TCL-1 were investigated. The results show the highest cell mass productivity reaches 1.7 g L−1 d−1 under the highest DIC and nutrients level. Conversely, the best regeneration of alkaline solution proceeds from pH 9.5 to 11.3 under the lowest level. In addition, the highest ΔDIC (DIC consumption) and DIC removal efficiency are 42 mM and 43% at 113.2 and 57 mM DICin, respectively. 相似文献

This paper studies climatic drivers (air and water temperature, precipitation rates, river discharge, sea level and storm
patterns) in four Mediterranean regions: the Catalan-Valencia Coast (Spain), the Oran (Algeria) and Gabès (Tunisia) Gulfs
and the western Nile Delta (Egypt). The paper also considers the potential hazards that these drivers can induce. It first
analyses climatic trends in the drivers, taking into account the available time series of recorded and simulated meteo-oceanographic
data from different sources. Next, it presents the general framework to assess biogeophysical hazards (flooding, erosion,
droughts and water quality), followed by a simple and yet robust evaluation of those hazards for the four studied coastal
sites. Assuming climate change projections under different scenarios and considering the observed trends in drivers, the resulting
erosion rates due to sea-level rise and wave storm effects have been estimated. The Nile and Ebro Deltas, together with the
Oran Gulf, are more vulnerable than the Gulfs of Valencia and Gabès. Regarding water quality in terms of (a) precipitation
and dissolved oxygen in the water column and (b) sea surface temperature, the results show that the most vulnerable zones
for the projected conditions (a) are the Gulfs of Oran, Valencia and Gabès, while the Nile Delta is the region where the decrease
in water quality will be less pronounced. For the projected conditions (b), the most vulnerable zone is the Ebro Delta, while
the impact in the other three cases will be smaller and of comparable magnitude. Finally, the overall future impact of these
hazards (associated to climatic change) in the four sites is discussed in comparative terms, deriving some conclusions. 相似文献

A combined treatment of electrocoagulation and ultrasound was proposed to solve some problems which exist in the phosphorus removal processes in fine chemical industry. The intermittently discharged wastewater has the features of high initial phosphorus concentration and wide initial pH variation. The electrocoagulation–ultrasound effective performance for the removal of phosphorus was investigated. The results obtained from synthetic wastewater showed that the total phosphorus (TP) decreased from 86 to about 0.4 mg/L, and the removal efficiency reached about 99.6 %, when ultrasound was applied to the electrocoagulation cell under the optimum working conditions in 10 min. Comparatively, the TP removal efficiency of electrocoagulation group was 81.3 % and the ultrasound group has almost no change. Therefore, we can conclude that the electrocoagulation and ultrasound synergistic effect can effectively degrade high-phosphorus wastewater. We have discussed the impact of various parameters on the electrocoagulation–ultrasound based on the phosphorus removal efficiency. The results obtained from synthetic wastewater showed that the optimum working pH was found to be 6, allowing the effluent to be met the emission standards without pH adjustment. An increased current enhanced the speed of treatment significance, but higher current (>40 mA/cm2) enhanced ultrasonic cavitation effect causing flocculation ineffective. In addition, it was found that the optimum ultrasonic power was 4 W/cm2 and the frequency was 20 kHz. The best ultrasound intervention and ultrasonic irradiation time were processed with electrocoagulation simultaneously. The results indicated that the electrocoagulation–ultrasound could be utilized as an attractive technique for removal of phosphate in the real wastewater. 相似文献
