High nutrient inputs and eutrophication continue to be one of the highest priority water quality problems. Bioretention is a low-impact development technology that has been advocated for use in urban and other developed areas. This work provides an in-depth analysis on removal of nutrients from a synthetic stormwater runoff by bioretention. Results have indicated good removal of phosphorus (70 to 85%) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (55 to 65%). Nitrate reduction was poor (< 20%) and, in several cases, nitrate production was noted. Variations in flowrate (intensity) and duration had a moderate affect on nutrient removal. Mass balances demonstrate the importance of water attenuation in the facility in reducing mass nutrient loads. Captured nitrogen can be converted to nitrate between storm events and subsequently washed from the system. Analysis on the fate of nutrients in bioretention suggests that accumulation of phosphorus and nitrogen may be controlled by carefully managing growing and harvesting of vegetation. 相似文献

Background, Aims and Scope It is well known that the composition of petroleum or some of its processing products changes in the environment mostly under
the influence of microorganisms. A series of experiments was conducted in order to define the optimum conditions for an efficient
biodegradation of petroleum pollutant, or bioremediation of different segments of the environment. The aim of these investigations
was to show to what extent the hydrocarbons of a petroleum pollutant are degraded by microbial cultures which were isolated
as dominant microorganisms from a surface water of a wastewater canal of an oil refinery and a nitrogen plant. Biodegradation
experiments were conducted on one paraffinic, and one naphthenic type of petroleum during a three month period under aerobic
conditions, varying the following parameters: Inorganic (Kp) or an organic medium (Bh) with or without exposition to light.
Methods Microorganisms were analyzed in a surface water sample from a canal (Pančevo, Serbia), into which wastewater from an oil
refinery and a nitrogen plant is released. The consortia of microorganisms were isolated from the water sample (most abundant
species: Phormidium foveolarum - filamentous Cyanobacteria, blue-green algae and Achanthes minutissima, diatoms, algae). The
simulation experiments of biodegradation were conducted with the biomass suspension and crude oils Sirakovo (Sir, paraffinic
type) and Velebit (Ve, naphthenic type). After a three month period, organic substance was extracted by means of chloroform.
In the extracts, the content of saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols and fatty acids was determined (the
group composition). n-Alkanes and isoprenoid aliphatic alkanes, pristane and phytane, in the aliphatic fractions, were analyzed
using gas chromatography (GC). Total isoprenoid aliphatic alkanes and polycyclic alkanes of sterane and triterpane types were
analyzed by GC-MS.
Results and discussion. Paraffinic type petroleums have a significant loss of saturated hydrocarbons. For naphthenic type petroleum,
such a trend has not been observed. The most intensive degradation of n-alkanes and isoprenoid aliphatic alkanes (in paraffinic
oil) and isoprenoids (in naphthenic oil) was observed using the inorganic medium Kp in the light; the microbial conversion
is somewhat lower with Kp in the dark; with organic medium Bh in the light the degradation is of low intensity; with the same
medium in the dark the degradation is hardly to be seen. Steranes and triterpanes were not affected by microbial degradation
under the conditions used in our experiments. Obviously, the petroleum biodegradation was restricted to the acyclic aliphatics
(n-alkanes and isoprenoids).
Conclusion Phormidium foveolarum (filamentous Cyanobacteria - blue-green algae) and Achanthes minutissima (diatoms, algae), microbial
cultures isolated as dominant algae from a surface water in a wastewater canal of an oil refinery and a nitrogen plant, have
degradable effects dominantly involving petroleum hydocarbons. Petroleum microbiological degradation is more intensive when
inorganic medium (in the light) is applied. Having in mind that the inorganic pollutants have been released into the canal
as well, this medium reflects more the natural environmental conditions. Polycyclic alkanes of sterane and triterpane type,
in spite of the fact that these compounds could be degraded, have remained unchanged regarding abundance and distribution.
Since this is the case even for naphthenic type petroleum (which is depleted in n-alkanes), it can be concluded that the biodegradation
of petroleum type pollutants, under natural conditions, will be restrained to the n-alkane and isoprenoid degradation.
Recommendation and Outlook Performed experiments and simulations of petroleum microbiological degradation may serve for the prediction of the fate of
petroleum type pollutants, as well as for definition of conditions for bioremediation of some environmental segments. 相似文献

The response variable (often the presence of a species) in predictive habitat models relies on a set of environmental predictors. Among all known environmental predictors, vegetation has the most effect on species abundance and on their habitat preferences, due to the wide range of necessary resources that it provides for the survival of bird species. However, other predictors, in turn, affect bird distribution, and some-times they play a more important role in habitat selection, depending on the natural history and ecological needs of the bird species. In this regard, different analyses have been conducted to predict the distribution, and define habitat suitability (such as discriminant function analysis, General Linear Models, and ANOVA). In this study, all three analytical designs were used to investigate the relationship of seven bird species to the major environmental gradients in the study area, to find out the significance of each of these factors on habitat selection. GIS has been used to prepare spatial distributional data, and to overlay and calculate different aspects of the environmental factors. The results suggest that potential individual habitat patches play a small role compared to the landscape (entire corresponding habitat patches), when considering vegetation. The influence of built-up areas is significant for all the species, and the proximity to the sea shore is very significant for at least one of the species, however, it is not neutral for all other species. 相似文献

This paper offers a potential measurement solution for assessing disaster impacts and subsequent recovery at the household level by using a modified domestic assets index (MDAI) approach. Assessment of the utility of the domestic assets index first proposed by Bates, Killian and Peacock (1984) has been confined to earthquake areas in the Americas and southern Europe. This paper modifies and extends the approach to the Indian sub‐continent and to coastal surge hazards utilizing data collected from 1,000 households impacted by the Indian Ocean tsunami (2004) in the Nagapattinam district of south‐eastern India. The analyses suggest that the MDAI scale is a reliable and valid measure of household living conditions and is useful in assessing disaster impacts and tracking recovery efforts over time. It can facilitate longitudinal studies, encourage cross‐cultural, cross‐national comparisons of disaster impacts and inform national and international donors of the itemized monetary losses from disasters at the household level. 相似文献

The present study was undertaken to study the trends of transport of thiram, a dithiocarbamate pesticide, at different time and depth in the fields under real field conditions for wheat crop. Numerical simulations were carried out by solving the coupled soil–water content movement and mass transport equations using HYDRUS- 1D. The supplementary data used for paramaterization of HYDRUS-1D comprise of irrigation treatments, climatic conditions, and soil characteristics. Results focus on the effects and influence of irrigation treatments on pesticide persistence and mobility. Modelling results were in good agreement with the experimentally determined thiram concentrations. Application of the model to measured field data of thiram movement indicates that the modelling approach can provide reliable and useful estimates of the mass flux of water and non-volatile pesticide in vadose zone. For policy-makers and planners, some regulation strategies are suggested for controlling inappropriate pesticide application under deficit irrigation or rain-fed conditions. 相似文献

Floods continue to pose the greatest threat to the property and safety of human communities among all natural hazards in the United States. This study examines the relationship between the built environment and flood impacts in Texas, which consistently sustains the most damage from flooding of any other state in the country. Specifically, we calculate property damage resulting from 423 flood events between 1997 and 2001 at the county level. We identify the effect of several built environment measures, including wetland alteration, impervious surface, and dams on reported property damage while controlling for biophysical and socio-economic characteristics. Statistical results suggest that naturally occurring wetlands play a particularly important role in mitigating flood damage. These findings provide guidance to planners and flood managers on how to alleviate most effectively the costly impacts of foods at the community level. 相似文献

Recent interest in expanding offshore oil production within waters of the United States has been met with opposition by groups
concerned with recreational, environmental, and aesthetic values associated with the coastal zone. Although the proposition
of new oil platforms off the coast has generated conflict over how coastal resources should be utilized, little research has
been conducted on where these user conflicts might be most intense and which sites might be most suitable for locating oil
production facilities in light of the multiple, and often times, competing interests. In this article, we develop a multiple-criteria
spatial decision support tool that identifies the potential degree of conflict associated with oil and gas production activities
for existing lease tracts in the coastal margin of Texas. We use geographic information systems to measure and map a range
of potentially competing representative values impacted by establishing energy extraction infrastructure and then spatially
identify which leased tracts are the least contentious sites for oil and gas production in Texas state waters. Visual and
statistical results indicate that oil and gas lease blocks within the study area vary in their potential to generate conflict

Fraser syndrome (OMIM 219000) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by cryptophthalmos, cutanaeous syndactyly, malformations of the larynx and genitourinary tract, craniofacial dysmorphism, orofacial clefting, mental retardation and musculoskeletal anomalies. There is marked interfamilial clinical heterogeneity. However, there is strong phenotypic similarity and concordance of the degree of severity of the disease within a family. We report a family with two cases of Fraser syndrome with marked clinical heterogeneity. One case had lethal phenotype with bilateral renal agenesis, while the other had mild phenotype with normal kidneys. Investigation of bioremediation potential of zymogenous bacteria and fungi for crude oil degradation

Bioremediation potential of bacteria and fungi isolated from sludge samples has been investigated (Danube alluvium, Pančevo,
Serbia). Total isolated microorganisms were divided into three parts. One part was added with actidione antifungicide. The
second part was added with streptomycin antibiotic. The third part was without additives. Paraffinic type of crude oil was
a substrate for assessment of bioremediation potential. The simulated oil biodegradation lasted 30, 60 and 90 days. Parallel
with that, the experiments with blind trial were conducted. Extracts were isolated from the samples with chloroform in a separate
funnel. They were assayed for the group composition (alkanes, aromatics, alcohols and fatty acids) by column chromatography.
Alkane fraction was analysed by gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The most intense oil degradation was achieved
in the experiments with bacteria, somewhat weaker with consortium of fungi and bacteria, and the weakest bioremediation potential
