We report a prenatal case of a maternally inherited abnormal chromosome 16, originally interpreted as a pericentric inversion only, but after family studies re-interpreted as a pericentric inversion (16) accompanied by an unbalanced (7;16) translocation. Because of the inversion 16 and an elder son with developmental delay and craniofacial dysmorphic features, in the past karyotyped as 46,XY, the chromosomes 16 of the mother and son were carefully re-examined. Using a whole chromosome 16 paint and sub-telomere probes of 16p and 16q, the karyotype of the mother was shown to be 46,XX,inv(16)(p11.2q23.2).ish t(7;16)(q36;p13.3)inv(16). Subsequently one chromosome 16 of the elder son appeared to be a der(16)t(7;16)(q36;p13.3). This is probably the result of a meiotic crossover between the chromosomes 16 in the mother. The prenatal karyotype was finally interpreted as 46,XY,inv(16)(p11.2q23.2).ish der(16)t(7;16)(q36;p13.3)inv(16). This is the same cytogenetic imbalance as his elder brother: a partial trisomy of chromosome 7 (q36→qter) and a partial monosomy of chromosome 16 (p13.3→pter). Visual and olfactory cues are the first interface between flowers and their visitors and are adaptations to facilitate successful pollination. Initial responses to and associative learning of multimodal cues by flower visitors are based on the perception of colours and volatiles. In this study, we tested how visual, olfactory and multimodal stimuli affect the behaviour of bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) and correlated the properties of 28 stimuli in relation to the insects’ sensory equipment to these behaviours. Initial responses and associative learning were recorded using a radio frequency identification system, tracking the visitation sequences of individual bumblebees to artificial flowers treated with naturally occurring pigments and/or volatiles. The salience of the stimuli was evaluated as the colour contrast to the background and as electroantennogram responses. The main finding was that both initial responses and learning performance were positively correlated to the salience of the stimuli, suggesting that salience is a key feature of flower cues in the interactions with insects. The salience of compound stimuli consisting of two or more pigments and/or volatiles was largely additively determined by the saliences of individual compounds. Potentially, the valence of the stimuli may interfere with the positive relationship between salience and behaviour, which is indicated by our results, too. The salience of multimodal cues depends on the species-specific equipment of visual and olfactory receptors and thus enables flowers to be advertising for some but rather inconspicuous for other flower visitors. 相似文献

Well-validated methods for measuring airborne occupational allergens are essential for effective control and reduction of allergen exposures. For wheat flour allergens, specific immunoassays are available, but there is a need for optimisation and standardization of sample processing procedures. Wheat flour allergen elution and storage were studied using airborne dust samples collected in bakeries with a new parallel sampler. Forty-eight series of 9 parallel filters were subjected to extraction procedures varying in elution medium, shaking method, extraction vial, and centrifugation speed. Wheat allergens were measured with enzyme immunoassays, and the effect of various procedures evaluated by mixed regression analyses. The stability of the eluted allergens was assessed after storage for 20 days and 4 months at -20 degrees C, in the presence or absence of casein in the medium. Only the type of elution medium had significant effects on allergen recovery: addition of Tween-20 resulted in 3- to 100-fold increased levels, an effect that was most pronounced at low concentrations. Allergen levels in extracts were stable for at least 4 months at -20 degrees C, irrespective of the presence of casein in the medium. Addition of Tween-20 to the elution medium is essential for optimal extraction of wheat allergen. The recommended procedure further includes the use of conventional polystyrene tubes, simple shaking methods, and centrifugation after extraction. Wheat dust extracts in PBS-Tween can be stored frozen for at least 4 months, and addition of a stabilising protein is not required. 相似文献

Studies on personal dust and endotoxin concentrations among animal farmers have been either small or limited to a few sectors in their investigations. The present study aimed to provide comparable information on the levels and variability of exposure to personal dust and endotoxin in different types of animal farmers. 507 personal inhalable dust samples were collected from 327 farmers employed in 54 pig, 26 dairy, 3 poultry, and 3 mink farms in Denmark. Measurements in pig and dairy farmers were full-shift and performed during summer and winter, while poultry and mink farmers were monitored during 4 well-defined production stages. The collected samples were measured for dust gravimetrically and analyzed for endotoxin by the Limulus amebocyte lysate assay. Simple statistics and random-effect analysis were used to describe the levels and the variability in measured dust and endotoxin exposure concentrations. As largely documented in the literature, the stark restrictions enforced worldwide in 2020 to curb the COVID-19 pandemic also curtailed the production of air pollutants to some extent. This study investigates the perception of the air pollution as assessed by individuals located in ten countries: Australia, Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Iran, Italy, Norway, South Africa and the USA. The perceptions towards air quality were evaluated by employing an online survey administered in May 2020. Participants (N = 9394) in the ten countries expressed their opinions according to a Likert-scale response. A reduction in pollutant concentration was clearly perceived, albeit to a different extent, by all populations. The survey participants located in India and Italy perceived the largest drop in the air pollution concentration; conversely, the smallest variation was perceived among Chinese and Norwegian respondents. The preliminary analysis of four months of emergency room visits for asthma in two inner city areas containing populations of similar socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic compositions, with similar day to day weather conditions but differing in their day to day levels of air pollution was made, and the relationship of visits to emergency rooms to daily temperature and air pollution levels measured in the areas, are described. In Harlem no relationship between daily visits to emergency rooms and daily levels of either smokeshade or sulfur dioxide have been observed whereas in Brooklyn a relatively strong correlation between daily visits for asthma and daily levels of sulfur dioxide but not with smokeshade have been observed over and above the effect of temperature. In both areas there was a strong relationship between daily visits for asthma and the first cold spells of the fall season. The average male/female ratio for asthma visits to hospital emergency rooms of both areas in the age group under thirteen years of age was 1.7 and for the over thirteen years of age group was 0.6. It appears from the data that Brooklyn presents a different picture for the environmental influence on asthma attacks. Even though it has been shown by previous investigators that asthmatics are sensitive to sulfur dioxide, we feel that in our case sulfur dioxide is not necessarily the causative agent, but might rather implicate some other confounding variable (most likely an environmental agent) that is disseminated in the general Bedford-Stuyvesant area in a similar day to day pattern to sulfur dioxide. We infer this from the fact that levels of sulfur dioxide were somewhat higher on the average in the Harlem area than they were in the Brooklyn area. 相似文献

The fate of glyphosate and its degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) was studied in soil. Labeled glyphosate was used to be able to distinguish the measured quantities of glyphosate and AMPA from the background values since the soil was sampled in a field where glyphosate had been used formerly. After addition of labeled glyphosate, the disappearance of glyphosate and the formation and disappearance of AMPA were monitored. The resulting curves were fitted according to a new EU guideline. The best fit of the glyphosate degradation data was obtained using a first-order multi compartment (FOMC) model. DT(50) values of 9 days (glyphosate) and 32 days (AMPA) indicated relatively rapid degradation. After an aging period of 6 months, the leaching risk of each residue was determined by treating the soil with pure water or a phosphate solution (pH 6), to simulate rain over a non-fertilized or fertilized field, respectively. Significantly larger (p < 0.05) amounts of aged glyphosate and AMPA were extracted from the soil when phosphate solution was used as an extraction agent, compared with pure water. This indicates that the risk of leaching of aged glyphosate and AMPA residues from soil is greater in fertilized soil. The blank soil, to which 252 g glyphosate/ha was applied 21 months before this study, contained 0.81 ng glyphosate/g dry soil and 10.46 ng AMPA/g dry soil at the start of the study. Blank soil samples were used as controls without glyphosate addition. After incubation of the blank soil samples for 6 months, a significantly larger amount of AMPA was extracted from the soil treated with phosphate solution than from that treated with pure water. To determine the degree of uptake of aged glyphosate residues by crops growing in the soil, (14)C-labeled glyphosate was applied to soil 6.5 months prior to sowing rape and barley seeds. After 41 days, 0.006 +/- 0.002% and 0.005 +/- 0.001% of the applied radioactivity was measured in rape and barley, respectively. 相似文献
