Distribution of fecal microorganisms in water, periphyton, and sediment was studied along the ?rnovnica river (Croatia) over a 1.5-year period. It was found that periphyton was inhabited by the highest number of investigated bacteria, while lower numbers of them were found in sediment and the lowest in surface water of the river. The concentrations of fecal microorganisms in periphyton and partly in sediment were found to be significantly higher in the middle of the river course, near the town of ?rnovnica, while according to the analysis of surface water the highest degree of pollution was reached on its estuary. The results were explained with respect to bacterial?Calgal associations. Considering the fact that most of the river microorganisms are associated with periphyton and sediment particles and only a small number of them is in the free-living form, microbiological analysis of both periphyton and sediment together with water samples has been suggested when fecal pollution of a river is concerned. 相似文献

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can have effects on the environment in a variety of ways. The Genetic Engineering Act (Gen TG) stipulates that, before a GMO may be used, its characteristics have to be assessed and its behaviour in the environment has to be estimated and evaluated. The Federal Environmental Agency is the first and hitherto only authority involved in the implementation of the Genetic Engineering Act to have presented a risk assessment concept, in order to ensure that consent decisions taken in the enforcement of the Act are comprehensible and comparable. This concept is presented, as are proposals for the envisaged revision which results from changes in the legal framework, notably the adoption of the Biosafety Protocol, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the new EU Deliberate Release Directive 2001/18/EC. In addition, the contribution discusses the role of the precautionary principle and possible implications for decision-making by the authorities. The precautionary principle demands that environmental risks and damage should be avoided as far as possible, or prevented from arising at the outset. A particular challenge when refining assessment concepts is the integration of nature conservation principles. These have been given insufficient attention to date. The contribution presents the results of a workshop on this subject, which was jointly organised by the Federal Environmental Agency and the Federal Nature Conservation Agency. Those participating in the workshop identified aspects which go beyond the scope of the Genetic Engineering Act and are derivee from the specific objective of biotope and species protection. Furthermore, the contribution addresses the provisions of the new Deliberate Release Directive 2001/18/EC on environmental risk assessment (e.r.a.). The aim of e.r.a., on a case-by-case basis is, to identify and evaluate potential adverse effects of the GMO, either direct and indirect, immediate or delayed, on human health and the environment, which the deliberate release or the placement of GMOs on the market may have. Using information and communication technologies (ICTs), e-participation is a tool that promotes the inclusion of the public in participative and deliberative decision-making processes, thus contributing to a transformation of the interaction between government and citizens in environmental governance and sustainable development. In a number of Chinese cities, citizens increasingly draw on ICTs to promote environmental sustainability and to encourage community-based actions aimed to address various environmental concerns. The potential success of e-participation and the role of ICTs in China has, however, not been well explored. The objective of this study is to understand the role that ICTs can play in promoting public participation about environmental sustainability issues in urban China. Based on an online survey with 630 respondents, the study aims to: (1) analyze what public motivations, perception/attitudes and actions drive environmental e-participation; (2) identify barriers to e-participation, and (3) assess the different applications and functions of ICT for citizen participation in environmental sustainability. The analysis illustrates how ICTs have helped the public to obtain sensitive information about sustainability issues, to mobilize people and to gain media coverage for their actions. The central finding is that new technologies have taken citizen engagement to new heights online. More specifically, the age of ICTs has unleashed a stronger public voice on environmental governance and sustainability issues in urban China, which does not go unnoticed by the Chinese state authorities. 相似文献

This article aims at comparing power resources that opponents to environmental policy apply in shaping and constructing discourses that contest the implementation of marine and terrestrial area protection. Document analyses and qualitative interviews have been undertaken with key actors and documents in two case areas to show how actors, knowledge, and financial and organisational capacities are introduced in the planning processes in order to contest the dominating environmental discourse established by environmental authorities. The results demonstrate how opponents to the terrestrial case were rather fragmented, consisting of a wide range of local and regional actors with various interests and agendas, and without substantial financial and organisational strength. Here, the environmental administration managed to create a partnership with local authorities that eventually proclaimed the national park as a win–win situation for local society. As a contrast, the opponents to the marine case had strong organisational, financial and even scientific capacities that were effectively unified with local authorities in the Skjerstad fjord. Here, the win–win situation was not accepted by the local parties. Together, these resources seemed to explain some of the variance in institutional responses in environmental administration, and finally different outcomes of the two cases. 相似文献

The recent rise of resilience thinking in climate security discourse and practice is examined and explained. Using the paradigmatic case of the United Kingdom, practitioners’ understandings of resilience are considered to show how these actors use a resilience lens to rearticulate earlier storylines of climate conflict in terms of complexity, decentralisation, and empowerment. Practitioners in the climate security field tend to reinterpret resilience in line with their established routines. As a result, climate resilience storylines and practices turn out to be much more diverse and messy than is suggested in the conceptual literature. Building on these findings, the recent success of resilience thinking in climate security discourse is explained. Climate resilience – not despite but due to its messiness – is able to bring together a wide range of actors, traditionally standing at opposite ends of the climate security debate. Through resilience storylines, climate security discourse becomes something to which a wide range of actors, ranging from security to the development field, can relate. 相似文献

Analyses of sludge from graphite electrodes used in the chloralkali process show total levels of PCDFs as high as 650000 pg/g sludge. The levels of tetra-, penta-and hexaCDFs were found to be approximately the same. The levels for the corresponding PCDDs were below the detection level. The dominating congeners within each group are the toxic 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDFs at levels of 340000 pg/g, This typical pattern, called the “chloralkali pattern” can also be found in soil samples taken at another chloralkali plant. The typical pattern can also be identified in a solution of ferric chloride. Traces of “chloralkali pattern” are identified in a sludge sample from the drinking water purification plant, the source for PCDFs in the sludge is unknown. 相似文献

The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb andZn) and arsenic (As) were surveyed and the metal pools estimatedin soils in Stockholm Municipality. The sampling sites were distributed all over the entire municipality with a higher sampling density in the city centre. Soils were sampled to a maximum depth of 25 to 60 cm. Soil texture, total-C content, electrical conductivity and pH were analysed. Heavy metal concentrations were determined after wet digestion with boiling7 M HNO3.The results showed a wide range in heavy metal concentrations, as well as in other soil properties. The city centre soils constituted a rather homogeneous group whereas outside this areano geographical zones could be distinguished. These soils were grouped based on present land use, i.e. undisturbed soils, public parks, wasteland (mainly former industrial areas), and roadside soils. The city centre and wasteland soils generally hadenhanced heavy metal concentrations to at least 30 cm depth compared to park soils outside the city centre and rural (arable)soils in the region, which were used to estimate background levels. For example, the mean Hg concentration was 0.9 (max 3.3)mg kg-1 soil at 0–5 cm and 1.0 (max 2.9) at 30 cm depth in the city centre soils, while the background level was 0,04 mg kg-1. Corresponding values for Pb were 104 (max 444) and135 (max 339) mg kg-1, at 0–5 and 30 cm, respectively, while the background level was 17 mg kg-1.The average soil pools (0–30 cm depth) of Cu, Pb and Zn were 21,38 and 58 g m-2 respectively, which for Pb was 3–4 timeshigher and for Cu and Zn 1.5–2 times higher than the backgroundlevel. The total amount of accumulated metals (down to 30 cm)in the city centre soils (4.5*10 6 m2 public gardens and green areas) was estimated at 80, 1.1, 120 and 40 t for Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn, respectively. The study showed (1) thatfrom a metal contamination point of view, more homogeneous soilgroups were obtained based on present land use than on geographicdistance to the city centre, (2) the importance of establishing a background level in order to quantify the degree of contamination, and (3) soil samples has to be taken below the surface layer (and deeper than 30 cm) in order to quantify theaccumulated metal pools in urban soils. 相似文献

Animals colonizing cities are exposed to many novel and potentially stressful situations. There is evidence that chronic stress can cause deleterious effects. Hence, wild animals would suffer from city life unless they adjusted their stress response to the conditions in a city. Here we show that European Blackbirds born in a city have a lower stress response than their forest conspecifics. We hand-raised urban and forest-living individuals of that species under identical conditions and tested their corticosterone stress response at an age of 5, 8, and 11 months. The results suggest that the difference is genetically determined, although early developmental effects cannot be excluded. Either way, the results support the idea that urbanization creates a shift in coping styles by changing the stress physiology of animals. The reduced stress response could be ubiquitous and, presumably, necessary for all animals that thrive in ecosystems exposed to frequent anthropogenic disturbances, such as those in urban areas. 相似文献
