Title V of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 require thousands of major industrial sources of air pollution to seek operating permits from local or state authorities. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Pollution Prevention in Permitting Program (P4), begun in 1993 under Title V, seeks to encourage, through a structured process of permit negotiations, the technological innovations required to achieve pollution prevention. A close look at three such negotiations, involving Intel, Lasco Bathware, and Cytec Industries, reveals that P4 did, indeed, push firms to pursue pollution prevention more aggressively and achieved a better balance between the concerns of EPA and state regulators and the interests of the regulated companies than might otherwise have been achieved. This report presents results of emission measurements of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) in the flue gas of seven oil, nine gas, and two wood firing systems under laboratory conditions. The burn rate of the combustion was in the range of the rated useful heat output. Two additional test series varied the amount of combustion air and thus the heat output. The PCDD/PCDF emissions for oil- and gas-fired boilers are in the range of 0.0020-0.0142 ng I-TEQ/m3 (referring to 3% O2 in the dry flue gas). No correlation between the combustion technique and the PCDD/PCDF emissions could be established. In the tests with the wood-fired furnaces PCDD/PCDF concentrations in the flue gas ranging from 0.014 to 0.076 ng I-TEQ/m3 (referring to 13% O2 in the dry flue gas) were found. A significant correlation between the firing rate of the heating insert and the measured PCDD/PCDF concentrations was found. On examination of three typical 2,3,7,8-CDD/CDF congener profiles, a comparable pattern could be observed with natural gas and light fuel oil. Objective: Young driver studies have applied quasi-induced exposure (QIE) methods to assess relationships between demographic and behavioral factors and at-fault crash involvement, but QIE's primary assumption of representativeness has not yet been validated among young drivers. Determining whether nonresponsible young drivers in clean (i.e., only one driver is responsible) 2-vehicle crashes are reasonably representative of the general young driving population is an important step toward ensuring valid QIE use in young driver studies. We applied previously established validation methods to conduct the first study, to our knowledge, focused on validating the QIE representativeness assumption in a young driver population.Methods: We utilized New Jersey's state crash and licensing databases (2008–2012) to examine the representativeness assumption among 17- to 20-year-old nonresponsible drivers involved in clean multivehicle crashes. It has been hypothesized that if not-at-fault drivers in clean 2-vehicle crashes are a true representation of the driving population, it would be expected that nonresponsible drivers in clean 3-or-more-vehicle crashes also represent this same driving population (Jiang and Lyles 2010). Thus, we compared distributions of age, gender, and vehicle type among (1) nonresponsible young drivers in clean 2-vehicle crashes and (2) the first nonresponsible young driver in clean crashes involving 3 or more vehicles to (3) all other nonresponsible young drivers in clean crashes involving 3 or more vehicles. Distributions were compared using chi-square tests and conditional logistic regression; analyses were conducted for all young drivers and stratified by license status (intermediate vs. fully licensed drivers), crash location, and time of day of the crash.Results: There were 41,323 nonresponsible drivers in clean 2-vehicle crashes and 6,464 nonresponsible drivers in clean 3-or-more-vehicle crashes. Overall, we found that the distributions of age, gender, and vehicle type were not statistically significantly different between the 3 groups; in each group, approximately one fourth of drivers were represented in each age from age 17 through 20, half were males, and approximately 80% were driving a car/station wagon/minivan. In general, conclusions held when we evaluated the assumption within intermediate and fully licensed young drivers separately and by crash location and time.Conclusions: It appears that the representativeness assumption holds among the population of young NJ drivers. We encourage young driver studies utilizing QIE methods to conduct internal validation studies to ensure appropriate application of these methods and we propose utilization of QIE methods to address broader foundational and applied questions in young driver safety. 相似文献

Trace metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr and Cu) were determined in some benthic algae from Sepetiba Bay, Brazil. This region has been modified by the increase of industrial activities during the last 30 years. Among species sampled the brown algae Padina gymnospora contained the greatest amount of Zn. The Bioconcentration Factor for Zn in P. gymnospora was found to be 10(4) under laboratory conditions. The absorption of (65)Zn depended on exposure time and increased with Zn concentrations in the medium. An insignificant amount of Zn desorbed from algae suggested a very high affinity with cellular binding sites. Zinc uptake by P. gymnospora is discussed by considering field and laboratory conditions. 相似文献

We describe intercomparison results obtained in the framework of the EC Directive 799/80 CEE on SO2, Black Smoke (BS) and Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) using standard reference materials. Calibrations and measuring methods used in national laboratories were compared to the reference methods laid down in the Directive. For SO2, the deviations were caused by inappropriate handling of the calibration rather than by possible shortcomings of the different methods themselves. In contrast, for BS, largest deviations were caused by differences in configurations of filter/reflectometer and of the conversion curves; for TSP by varying the type of filters and conditioning procedures before weighing. 相似文献

Traditional crop landraces play dynamic roles in the expression of native biological and cultural diversity via their central position in the genetic resource base, agroecosystems and social heritage of indigenous peoples. Farmer varieties provide farmers with an “agricultural survival kit” for household welfare and for adaptation to changing conditions. These varieties meet local cultural practices and environmental constraints, and play an intrinsic role in cultural survival by constituting a living repository of ancestral customs including cultivar-specific recipes, songs, handicrafts, stories of origin, and unique planting, harvesting, processing, and storage rituals and techniques. The centrality of rice in Southeast Asian agricultural and social systems, contrasted with the significant erosion of rice-based biological and cultural diversity in native communities, calls for increased attention to the links between traditional rice varieties and indigenous rice-based customs. This study represents the research efforts of rice farmers pertaining to the Tado clan, a Kempo Manggarai community on Flores␣Island, in association with USA academicians. Research results demonstrate: (i) a complex suite of upland rice-based ethnobotanical traditions; (ii) significant and␣dynamic regional flux and dissemination of “old” and “new” landraces; (iii)␣community-level maintenance of distinct genotypes across a range of microenvironments; (iv) localized “extinctions” of ancestral landraces within 1–2 generations and a concomitant loss of related traditions; and (v) the contributions of a collaborative (indigenous and academic) approach to ethnographic and agronomic research. 相似文献
