Soil is damaged by several threats and, among them, chemical contamination by pesticides and compaction. However, the effect of compaction on the fate of pesticides in soil, and the impact of pesticides on soil biological functioning are unknown. Therefore, we studied the effect of soil compaction on the degradation of the herbicide isoproturon, and the impact of this herbicide on an enzyme activity (β-glucosidase) involved in the C soil cycle. Undisturbed soil samples were prepared at different bulk densities, treated with isoproturon then incubated at 18°C in darkness for 63 days. The results showed that soil compaction did not modify significantly the degradation of isoproturon, neither the formation rates nor the nature of its metabolites. Moreover, compaction did not modify the impact of isoproturon on β-glucosidase activity. To our knowledge, these are the first results concerning the interactions between soil compaction and the degradation and impact of a pesticide. 相似文献

Long-term flights or the establishment of permanent bases in space provide serious challenges for life support systems. Plants are essential companion life forms for such space missions, where human habitats must mimic the cycles of life on earth to generate and recycle food, oxygen and water. Nowadays, the chemical–mechanical recycling systems used in the international space station are much more compact, less labour intensive and more reliable than plant-based systems, but these systems would be too expensive for the long-term human exploration. In order to improve living conditions for humans and plants, we need an accurate characterisation of the mass transfer phenomena related to condensation of humid air. We are interested in developing an experimental protocol, which would help us to establish a theoretical model describing the heterogeneous transfers along a wall or a plant in an air-conditioned environment. Initially, we started in dry conditions by measuring the velocity profiles within the boundary layer that develop on a horizontal or a vertical flat plate in a wind tunnel. The velocity ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 m s?1. Existing coupled heat and mass transfer measurement results relevant to our applications are discussed. 相似文献

The heat wave from 1 to 16 August 2003 is considered in the city of Grenoble (French Alps). The modelling system (PREVALP) is based on several models operating on nested domains: MM5 for dynamics, CHIMERE for chemistry (18 km and 6 km grid size) and METPHOMOD for both dynamics and chemistry (2 km grid size). The analysis of the results shows that during the heat wave, the mixing layer is thicker, up to 3500 m agl, hence inducing transport of ozone to high altitude. Two regimes were diagnosed: (1) a freely developing convective layer, (2) a layer trapped under south wind which makes ozone precursors accumulate in the city. Local ozone production is estimated to be 40% of the plume maximum in case (2) and only 30% in case (1). Sensitivity analysis by step increase for temperature at the boundary of the inner domain shows the non-linearity of the response; in this case most of the effect comes from chemistry. Ocean acidification has emerged over the last two decades as one of the largest threats to marine organisms and ecosystems. However, most research efforts on ocean acidification have so far neglected management and related policy issues to focus instead on understanding its ecological and biogeochemical implications. This shortfall is addressed here with a systematic, international and critical review of management and policy options. In particular, we investigate the assumption that fighting acidification is mainly, but not only, about reducing CO2 emissions, and explore the leeway that this emerging problem may open in old environmental issues. We review nine types of management responses, initially grouped under four categories: preventing ocean acidification; strengthening ecosystem resilience; adapting human activities; and repairing damages. Connecting and comparing options leads to classifying them, in a qualitative way, according to their potential and feasibility. While reducing CO2 emissions is confirmed as the key action that must be taken against acidification, some of the other options appear to have the potential to buy time, e.g. by relieving the pressure of other stressors, and help marine life face unavoidable acidification. Although the existing legal basis to take action shows few gaps, policy challenges are significant: tackling them will mean succeeding in various areas of environmental management where we failed to a large extent so far. 相似文献

When resources are limited, life history theory predicts a trade-off between growth, reproduction and survival. In summer,
lactating females of temperate large herbivores such as the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) normally have access to abundant forage but also face the high energetic needs of lactation and recovery from winter mass
loss. At high population density, however, females may face a trade-off between allocating resources for maintenance and for
reproduction. To simulate the effects of increased intra-specific competition at high density, we measured for 2 years how
an experimental food restriction of approximately 20% affected current reproduction and body mass changes of adult females
and their fawns during the fawning and lactation periods. Fawn survival decreased 35%, and fawn growth decreased 26% in the
food-restricted treatment. There was no effect of food restriction on female mass. Irrespective of treatment, however, lactating
females gained 30 g/day less than non-lactating females, and females that had weaned a fawn the previous year gained 20 g/day
less than females that had not. We conclude that when resources were scarce, females adopted a conservative strategy favouring
their own survival, mass recovery and future reproductive potential over their current reproduction, probably to maximise

Females ofBlattella germanica andBlaberus craniifer produce a volatile sex pheromone attractive at a distance for conspecific males. During the emission of the pheromone, females ofB. craniifer adopt a typical calling posture; we never observe such a stance inB. germanica females. For both species, the glandular structures responsible for pheromonal production are located on the female pygidium. InB. germanica, the thickness of the glandular epithelium is clearly correlated with the attractiveness of females, being maximum for 13 day old females.
