In this paper we examine the relationship between identification with the environmental movement and support for First Nations' land claims in order to determine the potential for an environmental justice movement in British Columbia. The findings are based on survey data collected from members of a wilderness preservation movement organization based on Vancouver Island. The findings demonstrate that the stronger an individual identifies with the environmental movement, the more s/he supports linking First Nations' land claims to conservation campaigns. We conclude by proposing that the wilderness preservation movement could increase its mobilization potential and widen the scope of the movement by including First Nations' issues in their campaigns. It could do this by expanding its frame to include issues of environmental justice, thereby connecting environmental protection and fair access to resources. 相似文献
The aim of this work was to determine the level of benzene, toluene, o-xylene and m, p-xylene (BTX) in air samples collected from the cabins of new and used vehicles of the same model. Ten new vehicles were examined in order to check interior emission from materials used to equip the passenger compartment. In order to compare and define the impact of exhaust gases, air samples were also collected from two used cars, at different mileages (up to 20,000 kin). All vehicles tested were of the same type. Samples were collected onto Carbograph 1TD sorbent, thermally desorbed and examined with the use of gas chromatography with flame ionisation and mass spectrometry detectors. All results obtained were referred to Polish and German requirements for indoor air quality (both in public buildings and in workspace environments). Average benzene, toluene, o-xylene and m, p-xylene concentrations in new cars were determined at the level of 11.8 μg/m^3, 82.7 μg/m^3, 21.2 μg/m^3 and 89.5 μg/m^3, respectively. In the used cars, BTX concentration increased with increasing vehicle mileage. The most significant increase of BTX concentration was observed above 11,000 km mileage. 相似文献
The influence of the polymers' properties on the solid-phase extraction recovery was studied. Different porous copolymers were used: di(methacryloyloxymethyl)naphtalene-divinylbenzene with ester functional groups (DMN-DVB), 4,4'-bis(maleimido)diphenylmethane-divinylbenzene with imide functional groups (BM-DVB), p,p'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane diglycidyl methacrylic ester-divinylbenzene (MEMDE-DVB) and p,p'-dihydroxydiphenylpropane diglycidyl methacrylic ester-divinylbenzene (MEDDE-DVB) with ester end hydroxyl functional groups. The extraction properties of new synthesized polymeric sorbents were compared with these of two commercial polymeric sorbents: styrene-divinylbenzene (SDB-1) and styrene-divinylbenzene with modified surface (StrataX). Chemical analyses were performed on one hundred and twenty of the most popular varieties of fish products (smoked fish, salted fish, and marinated fish) of the fish market in Poland. The contents of the nutritive substances of fish products (protein, micro- and macronutrients, vitamins A1, D3, E, and fatty acids) and the chosen contaminant (toxic metals – mercury, cadmium, lead, arsenic; dioxin/furans – PCDDFs; dioxin-like PCB – dl-PCBs; seven congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers – PBDEs; organochlorine pesticides – ΣDDT, HCB, ΣHCH and marker polychlorinated biphenyls – PCB7) levels were determined. It was confirmed that fish products are a good source of digestible proteins, iodine, selenium, and vitamin D3. The fundamental nutritive benefit of processed fish lies in its highly beneficial fatty acid composition, which is what imparts them healthy nutritive qualities. The high content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), which is not noted in other food products, is particularly important.The majority of contaminants studied were present in low levels. The possible threats, particularly in the case of pregnant/nursing women and young children, can pose the levels of dioxin/furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like (dl-PCBs) in smoked Baltic salmon and smoked sprat, elevated in a relation to particular requirements concerning the content of sum of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in fish (8 pg WHO-TEQ g−1).The health benefits and risks stemming from consumption of fish products were determined according to the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) for chosen contaminants (Cd, Hg, As, PCDD/Fs + dl-PCB) and the quantity of ingredients that render a fish diet healthy based on data from the EFSA Journal [EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), 2005. We predict the decadal change in position of three American Samoa mangroves from analysis of a time series of remotely sensed
imagery, a geographic information system, tide gauge data, and projections for change in sea-level relative to the mangrove
surface. Accurate predictions of changes to coastal ecosystem boundaries, including in response to projected relative sea-level
rise, enable advanced planning to minimize and offset anticipated losses and minimize social disruption and cost of reducing
threats to coastal development and human safety. The observed mean landward migration of three mangroves' seaward margins
over four decades was 25, 64, and 72mma−1, 12 to 37 times the observed relative sea-level rise rate. Two of the sites had clear trends in reductions in mangrove area,
where there was a highly significant correlation between the change in position of the seaward mangrove margin and change
in relative sea-level. Here it can be inferred that the force of sea-level rise relative to the mangrove surface is causing
landward migration. Shoreline movement was variable at a third site and not significantly correlated with changing sea-level,
where it is likely that forces other than change in relative sea-level are predominant. Currently, 16.5%, 23.4%, and 68.0%
of the three mangroves' landward margins are obstructed by coastal development from natural landward migration. The three
mangroves could experience as high as a 50.0% reduction in area by the year 2100. A 12% reduction in mangrove area by the

The health of horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) eggs is important not only to maintain horseshoe crab populations, but because they are a resource for higher trophic levels, such as fish and shorebirds. We examined the concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, and selenium in the eggs of horseshoe crabs from Delaware Bay (between New Jersey and Delaware, USA) in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, and 2012 to determine if there were significant temporal changes and if levels appear to pose a health risk to the crabs themselves, or to predators that consume them. All metal levels declined in horseshoe crab eggs between 1994 and 2012, although the declines were much less consistent for lead and chromium than that for mercury and cadmium. Levels of contaminants found in these eggs are well below those known to cause adverse effects in the crabs themselves or to organisms that consume them, such as migrating shorebirds. 相似文献
Greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories at national or provincial levels include the total emissions as well as the emissions for many categories of human activity, but there is a need for spatially explicit GHG emission inventories. Hence, the aim of this research was to outline a methodology for producing a high-resolution spatially explicit emission inventory, demonstrated for Poland. GHG emission sources were classified into point, line, and area types and then combined to calculate the total emissions. We created vector maps of all sources for all categories of economic activity covered by the IPCC guidelines, using official information about companies, the administrative maps, Corine Land Cover, and other available data. We created the algorithms for the disaggregation of these data to the level of elementary objects such as emission sources. The algorithms used depend on the categories of economic activity under investigation. We calculated the emissions of carbon, nitrogen sulfure and other GHG compounds (e.g., CO2, CH4, N2O, SO2, NMVOC) as well as total emissions in the CO2-equivalent. Gridded data were only created in the final stage to present the summarized emissions of very diverse sources from all categories. In our approach, information on the administrative assignment of corresponding emission sources is retained, which makes it possible to aggregate the final results to different administrative levels including municipalities, which is not possible using a traditional gridded emission approach. We demonstrate that any grid size can be chosen to match the aim of the spatial inventory, but not less than 100 m in this example, which corresponds to the coarsest resolution of the input datasets. We then considered the uncertainties in the statistical data, the calorific values, and the emission factors, with symmetric and asymmetric (lognormal) distributions. Using the Monte Carlo method, uncertainties, expressed using 95% confidence intervals, were estimated for high point-type emission sources, the provinces, and the subsectors. Such an approach is flexible, provided the data are available, and can be applied to other countries.
