In social hymenoptera, the reproductive division of labor is often linked to differences in individual body size with the reproductive caste (the queen) being larger than the workers. Likewise, the reproductive potential may vary with size within the worker caste and could affect the evolution of worker size in social insects. Here, we tested the relationship between worker size and reproductive potential in the facultative parthenogenetic ant Cataglyphis cursor. Colonies are headed by a multiply mated queen, but workers can produce gynes (virgin queens) and workers by thelytokous parthenogenesis after the queen's death. We observed the behaviour of workers (n = 357) until the production of gynes (212 h over 3 months) in an orphaned colony (mated queen not present). The size of workers was measured, and their paternal lineage determined using six microsatellite markers, to control for an effect of patriline. Larger workers were more likely to reproduce and lay more eggs indicating that individual level selection could take place. However, paternal lineage had no effect on the reproductive potential and worker size. From the behavioural and genetic data, we also show for the first time in this species, evidence of aggressive interactions among workers and a potential for nepotism to occur in orphaned colonies, as the five gynes produced belonged to a single paternal lineage. 相似文献

Objective
Omphalocele is known to be associated with genetic anomalies like trisomy 13, 18 and Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome, but not with Turner syndrome (TS). Our aim was to assess the incidence of omphalocele in fetuses with TS, the phenotype of this association with other anomalies, their karyotype, and the fetal outcomes.Method
Retrospective multicenter study of fetuses with confirmed diagnosis of TS. Data were extracted from a detailed questionnaire sent to specialists in prenatal ultrasound.Results
680 fetuses with TS were included in this analysis. Incidence of small omphalocele in fetuses diagnosed ≥12 weeks was 3.1%. Including fetuses diagnosed before 12 weeks, it was 5.1%. 97.1% (34/35) of the affected fetuses had one or more associated anomalies including increased nuchal translucency (≥3 mm) and/or cystic hygroma (94.3%), hydrops/skin edema (71.1%), and cardiac anomalies (40%). The karyotype was 45,X in all fetuses. Fetal outcomes were poor with only 1 fetus born alive.Conclusion
TS with 45,X karyotype but not with X chromosome variants is associated with small omphalocele. Most of these fetuses have associated anomalies and a poor prognosis. Our data suggest an association of TS with omphalocele, which is evident from the first trimester. 相似文献33.
Summary. Chemical structures of 27 ellagitannins were systemically compared in respect of their in vitro oxidative activity at high pH found e.g. in lepidopteran insects. The analysis revealed over six-fold differences in the
oxidative activities of individual ellagitannins which could be explained by the chemical divergences of the ellagitannins.
These findings allowed the formulation of a simple equation that can be used to estimate the oxidative activities of other
ellagitannins with known structures. The results suggest that, in future studies of plant-herbivore interactions, ellagitannins
should be (1) taken into account as possible oxidative stress -based defences of plants against herbivores, (2) chemically
characterized from the study plants, and (3) quantified individually, not as chemically ill-defined group. These actions together

Betula papyrifera trees were exposed to elevated concentrations of CO2 (1.4 × ambient), O3 (1.2 × ambient) or CO2 + O3 at the Aspen Free-air CO2 Enrichment Experiment. The treatment effects on leaf surface characteristics were studied after nine years of tree exposure. CO2 and O3 increased epidermal cell size and reduced epidermal cell density but leaf size was not altered. Stomatal density remained unaffected, but stomatal index increased under elevated CO2. Cuticular ridges and epicuticular wax crystallites were less evident under CO2 and CO2 + O3. The increase in amorphous deposits, particularly under CO2 + O3, was associated with the appearance of elongated plate crystallites in stomatal chambers. Increased proportions of alkyl esters resulted from increased esterification of fatty acids and alcohols under elevated CO2 + O3. An Alternative Approach to Photochemical Ozone Creation Potentials Applied under European Conditions

ABSTRACT Photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) values for 83 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including CO and CH4, were calculated under different environmental conditions representative for Europe. These calculations show that variations in POCP values are large between different types of chemical environments and that POCP values for VOCs should be presented as ranges instead of single values. POCP ranges are based on the extremes of the POCP values and are defined with the intention to include all POCP values an individual VOC will obtain in any European environment where O3 formation is of environmental concern. The POCP ranges indicate large differences in O3 production between individual VOCs, which justifies the use of this ranking scale instead of treating all VOCs as a homogeneous group of species in abatement strategies. Both the average O3 production over 96 hr and the maximum contribution to the O3 concentration were studied. The most efficient O3 producers were found to be iso-prene, 2-methyl-2-butene, and acrolein. As a group, the alkenes are the most potent O3 producers, followed by higher alkanes and then the aromatics. The calculated values show a good agreement with previously calculated POCP values under northern European conditions. 相似文献
