Nutritional quality of phloem sap in relation to host plant-alternation in the bird cherry-oat aphid

Summary. Host alternation in aphids has been attributed to complementary growth of host plants, or more specifically to seasonal changes in the nitrogen quality of the phloem sap. In this report, seasonal fluctuation of free amino acids in phloem of the winter and summer host plants (Prunus padus, bird cherry and Hordeum vulgare, barley) of Rhopalosiphum padi (the bird cherry-oat aphid) were investigated in the context of aphid growth and behaviour. Phloem was collected from the cut stylets of aphids taken from plants that were grown outdoors. The total concentration of amino acids in P. padus phloem increased between bud break and late flush (spring), decreased in mature leaves (summer), and increased again in early senescent leaves (autumn). In H. vulgare, however, amino acid concentration fluctuated less from seedlings to flowering. Spring aphids from P. padus grew rapidly on this host from bud break to late flush, but died on mature and early senescent leaves. Summer aphids from H. vulgare grew as fast on this host as spring aphids did on flush leaves of P. padus. Sexual females grew more slowly than other generations and nearly as well on mature as on early senescent P. padus leaves. As judged by aphid growth and phloem nitrogen quality, P. padus during spring equals the summer host H. vulgare. However, the lower growth rates of R. padi on mature and senescent leaves of P. padus appear only loosely correlated with phloem amino acid concentrations. Therefore, factors influencing aphid nutrition, or ecology, other than seasonal changes in phloem sap amino acid concentration may explain the existence of host alternation in R. padi. 相似文献

Blood lead concentration is still most commonly used to assess the degree of exposure to environmental lead. However, blood lead levels are relatively transient and so tissues such as hair which store lead over longer periods need to be explored as bioindicators of lead toxicity. The results of such an investigation into hair are presented. These results indicate that there are significant differences in scalp-hair levels between the African, East Indian and Chinese racial groups in the multiracial adult population of Trinidad, West Indies. However, no significant differences were found for the pubic hair levels among the three races. The percentage of sulphur or the carbon: sulphur ratios in scalp hair did not influence the scalp-hair lead levels in the general population, although a significant difference in the carbon:sulphur ratios was observed between the African and East Indian racial groups. 相似文献

Agricultural land use is transforming rapidly in Southeast Asia, often supported by development policies aiming primarily at economic growth. However, the socioeconomic outcomes of these changes for smallholder farmers remain unclear. Here, we systematically review cases of agricultural land use change in Southeast Asia to assess their socioeconomic outcomes and potential trade-off and synergies in these outcomes. Of the 126 reviewed cases, we find mostly positive outcomes for income (SDG 1, 100 cases) and employment (SDG 8, 11 cases), while outcomes on health (SDG 3, 9 cases) were mixed, and outcomes for food security (SDG 2, 44 cases), gender equality (SDG 5, 13 cases), and economic equality (SDG 10, 14 cases) were mostly negative. Studies describing multiple outcomes show indications of synergies between income and food security, and between income and employment, but also potential trade-offs between income and economic equality. In addition, we find that economic land concessions result in multiple negative outcomes more often than other types of land governance regimes. 以铜仁汞矿为点源,研究对梵净山汞的辐射、沉降及流通影响.在海拔500m的梵净山定位测定,应用Mosbag方法,评价梵净山Hg的干湿沉降的累积是115μg·m-2·a-1,干沉降大约占总沉降的50%,通过测定苔藓生物量和Hg含量估算Hg的总沉降量为850μg·m-2·a-1,Hg的流通量平均为210μg·m-2·a-1,Hg的总沉降占总流通量80%.Hg在梵净山沉降累积随高度变化关系明显,海拔2000m以下时汞的沉降累积量较大,和苔藓植物指示汞含量变化关系相一致. 相似文献

The Kyoto Protocol opens new possibilities for using the biosphere as a carbon sink. Using agro-ecosystems as carbon sinks may be the most appropriate practice from both environmental and socioeconomic points of view. Degraded agro-ecosystems in Africa might benefit significantly from the improved land management that would be part of a carbon sequestration program. There are vast areas of these agro-ecosystems in Africa and their rehabilitation is an urgent matter. We agree with UNEP that there are potentially important synergies to be made between the Convention on Climate Change, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and the UN Convention on Biodiversity. In this paper, we have investigated the potential for increasing soil carbon content in semiarid agro-ecosystems in the Sudan and found that increasing fallow periods will result in increased soil carbon content and converting marginal agricultural areas to rangeland will restore the carbon levels to 80% of the natural savannah carbon levels in 100 years. The economic gain from a future carbon sequestration program has the potential of a significant contribution to the household economy in these agro-ecosystems. 相似文献

The urban solid waste of the city of Indaiatuba (pop. 175 000), located in the state of S?o Paulo, was characterized, focusing on the recycling potential. For this purpose, collected waste was subdivided into 27 items, classified by mass and volume. About 90% of this waste was found to be potentially recyclable and only 10% requiring landfilling. The compostable organic matter, in the form of food and garden waste, both with high moisture content (51 and 41%, respectively), represents 54% in mass and 21% in volume. The most common type of plastic in this waste is high density polyethylene, whose estimated disposal is about 5000kgday(-1). A socio-economic analysis of the waste generation indicates that low-income neighbourhoods discard relatively less packaging and more food waste, shoes and construction debris than middle and high income ones, which may be due to low purchasing power and schooling. Our findings indicate that more aluminium and uncoloured polyethylene terephthalate is discarded in the warmest months of the year, probably due to a greater consumption of canned and bottled drinks. 相似文献

We summarize direct and indirect effects on fitness components of animal color pattern and present a synthesis of theories concerning the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of chromatic multiple niche polymorphisms. Previous endeavors have aimed primarily at identifying conditions that promote the evolution and maintenance of polymorphisms. We consider in a conceptual model also the reciprocal influence of color polymorphism on population processes and propose that polymorphism entails selective advantages that may promote the ecological success of polymorphic species. The model begins with an evolutionary branching event from mono- to polymorphic condition that, under the influence of correlational selection, is predicted to promote the evolution of physical integration of coloration and other traits (cf. multi-trait coevolution and complex phenotypes). We propose that the coexistence within a population of alternative ecomorphs with coadapted gene complexes promotes utilization of diverse environmental resources, population stability and persistence, colonization success, and range expansions, and enhances the evolutionary potential and speciation. Conversely, we predict polymorphic populations to be less vulnerable to environmental change and at lower risk of range contractions and extinctions compared with monomorphic populations. We offer brief suggestions as to how these falsifiable predictions may be tested. 相似文献

Mercury in air has been measured at five coastal Mediterranean sites, involving measurements in Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia and
Israel. Four two-weeks long measurements campaigns were performed at the five sites. The measurements were carried out during
autumn 2003 and winter, spring and summer 2004. Total gaseous mercury/elemental gaseous mercury, particulate mercury and divalent
gaseous mercury were measured in parallel at the five sites. The activities constituted a subtask of the EU funded MERCYMS
research project, which also included Mediterranean Sea cruises where both mercury in air and water were measured. The result
from an evaluation of all the coastal air data is presented. Mercury concentrations from the different sites are compared
with similar data obtained in northern Europe and elsewhere. The result shows that the background concentration of mercury
in Mediterranean coastal air is lower than earlier anticipated. Background concentrations of TGM, RGM and TPM corresponded
to 1.75–1.80 ng m−3, 1–13 and 3–23 pg m−3, respectively. The measurements also showed that the mercury concentration occasionally can be very high in some areas due
to local anthropogenic emissions. It is proposed that diurnal variation in RGM concentrations observed during situation with

The awareness of the need for robust impact evaluations in conservation is growing and statistical matching techniques are increasingly being used to assess the impacts of conservation interventions. Used appropriately matching approaches are powerful tools, but they also pose potential pitfalls. We outlined important considerations and best practice when using matching in conservation science. We identified 3 steps in a matching analysis. First, develop a clear theory of change to inform selection of treatment and controls and that accounts for real-world complexities and potential spillover effects. Second, select the appropriate covariates and matching approach. Third, assess the quality of the matching by carrying out a series of checks. The second and third steps can be repeated and should be finalized before outcomes are explored. Future conservation impact evaluations could be improved by increased planning of evaluations alongside the intervention, better integration of qualitative methods, considering spillover effects at larger spatial scales, and more publication of preanalysis plans. Implementing these improvements will require more serious engagement of conservation scientists, practitioners, and funders to mainstream robust impact evaluations into conservation. We hope this article will improve the quality of evaluations and help direct future research to continue to improve the approaches on offer. 相似文献
