This paper describes part of a programme of work undertaken at the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) to investigate the behaviour of selected water-reactive chemicals. Following an accidental release, such substances react exothermically with any water present, generating acidic vapours. The STAWaRS (Source Term Assessment of Water Reactive Substances) software was developed for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) by ESR Technology to model this complex process. The aims of the study described here were to provide experimental validation of the heats of hydrolysis used within STAWaRS, and to perform sensitivity studies on selected STAWaRS input parameters. The heat of hydrolysis of acetyl chloride was measured and showed good correlation with the value used within STAWaRS. Some of the variables that influence the severity of acetyl chloride spills are examined, with reference to predictions made by the STAWaRS model. The heats of hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride previously measured at HSL are also discussed, and the effect of adopting these experimentally derived values for modelling spills is shown for a hypothetical land use planning case. This study demonstrates the importance of using experimentally validated values for STAWaRS input parameters. 相似文献
An increase in nanomaterial applications will likely lead to an increased probability of environmental exposures, raising concerns regarding the safety of these materials. Recent studies have indicated that manufactured nanomaterials, such as metal oxides, have the potential to be harmful to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. The majority of nano-metal oxide research addressing potential toxicological issues has been focused in aquatic environments with very little terrestrial data. This study characterized the acute and reproductive toxicity of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) to earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in a terrestrial system. Following a 14 d exposure, nano-sized ZnO on filter paper was acutely toxic to E. fetida, while nano-sized TiO(2) did not exhibit acute toxicity. In contrast, neither nano-sized ZnO nor TiO(2) exhibited acute toxicity to earthworms in sand. Both nano-sized ZnO and TiO(2), following a 4 week exposure, caused reproductive effects in earthworms in artificial soil. Overall, nano-sized ZnO exhibited greater toxicity than nano-sized TiO(2) in Eisenia fetida. 相似文献
The pink pigeon (Nesoenas mayeri) is an endemic species of Mauritius that has made a remarkable recovery after a severe population bottleneck in the 1970s to early 1990s. Prior to this bottleneck, an ex situ population was established from which captive-bred individuals were released into free-living subpopulations to increase population size and genetic variation. This conservation rescue led to rapid population recovery to 400–480 individuals, and the species was twice downlisted on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. We analyzed the impacts of the bottleneck and genetic rescue on neutral genetic variation during and after population recovery (1993–2008) with restriction site-associated sequencing, microsatellite analyses, and quantitative genetic analysis of studbook data of 1112 birds from zoos in Europe and the United States. We used computer simulations to study the predicted changes in genetic variation and population viability from the past into the future. Genetic variation declined rapidly, despite the population rebound, and the effective population size was approximately an order of magnitude smaller than census size. The species carried a high genetic load of circa 15 lethal equivalents for longevity. Our computer simulations predicted continued inbreeding will likely result in increased expression of deleterious mutations (i.e., a high realized load) and severe inbreeding depression. Without continued conservation actions, it is likely that the pink pigeon will go extinct in the wild within 100 years. Conservation rescue of the pink pigeon has been instrumental in the recovery of the free-living population. However, further genetic rescue with captive-bred birds from zoos is required to recover lost variation, reduce expression of harmful deleterious variation, and prevent extinction. The use of genomics and modeling data can inform IUCN assessments of the viability and extinction risk of species, and it helps in assessments of the conservation dependency of populations. 相似文献

The spatial distribution of trace elements in surface sediments of the Hooghly estuary was studied over the monsoons in 2014–2017. As, Cd, Ni, Pb and U were two- to sixteen-fold the crust means with increasing levels toward the estuary, with Ni peak during the post-monsoon. Pearson’s correlation matrix, cluster analysis, enrichment factors and pollution index revealed the anthropic source and association of trace elements with Fe, Mn and Al and of Pb with U. Geoaccumulation index revealed for Ni an extremely contaminated situation at the estuary water during monsoon and for Cd a heavily contaminated situation at freshwater location. The potential contamination index was >6; thus, sediments were very severely contaminated by As, Cd and Ni with worst situation for As and Cd at fresh and brackish water and during post-monsoon. The overall ecological risk was severe, 300≤RI<600 at all sites and seasons, especially after the monsoon, at fluvial and brackish locations.
Although predators affect prey both via consumption and by changing prey migration behavior, the interplay between these two effects is rarely incorporated into spatial models of predator-prey dynamics and competition among prey. We develop a model where generalist predators have consumptive effects (i.e., altering the likelihood of local prey extinction) as well as nonconsumptive effects (altering the likelihood of colonization) on spatially separated prey populations (metapopulations). We then extend this model to explore the effects of predators on competition among prey. We find that generalist predators can promote persistence of prey metapopulations by promoting prey colonization, but predators can also hasten system-wide extinction by either increasing local extinction or reducing prey migration. By altering rates of prey migration, predators in one location can exert remote control over prey dynamics in another location via predator-mediated changes in prey flux. Thus, the effect of predators may extend well beyond the proportion of patches they visit. In the context of prey metacommunities, predator-mediated shifts in prey migration and mortality can shift the competition-colonization trade-off among competing prey, leading to changes in the prey community as well as changes in the susceptibility of prey species to habitat loss. Consequently, native prey communities may be susceptible to invasion not only by exotic prey species that experience reduced amounts of mortality from resident predators, but also by exotic prey species that exhibit strong dispersal in response to generalist native predators. Ultimately, our work suggests that the consumptive and nonconsumptive effects of generalist predators may have strong, yet potentially cryptic, effects on competing prey capable of mediating coexistence, fostering invasion, and interacting with anthropogenic habitat alteration. 相似文献
We performed male attraction experiments and staged courtship sequences to test for non-random mating with respect to social
behavioral phenotype in the comb-footed spider, Anelosimus studiosus. While asocial behavior is the dominant phenotype in all A. studiosus populations examined to date, a social phenotype approaches a frequency of 15% in colder environments. We collected test
subjects from higher latitude polymorphic populations and scored all individuals as to their behavioral phenotype prior to
their use in these trials. Males of both phenotypes differentially approached and courted social females over asocial females
and no-spider controls. By offering males different numbers of females of one type vs. the other in subsequent trials, we
determined that the difference in attractiveness between the two phenotypes social/asocial is 1.5/1. Both the web produced
by a female and a female that has been removed from its web attract males. We suggest that the male attracting pheromone is
present on females and is also attached to silk threads. Staged encounters completed between males and females of the respective
phenotypes demonstrated that courting males suffer significantly less pre-copulatory sexual cannibalism with social females
than with asocial ones, and thus, female social tendency is phenotypically linked to sexual aggression. We propose that the
male preference for social females is adaptive because of the observed asymmetry in courtship success. 相似文献
Animal groups arise from individuals’ choices about the number, characteristics, and identity of associates. Individuals make
these choices to gain benefits from their associations. As the needs of an individual change with its phenotype, so too we
expect the nature of its associations to vary. In this paper, we investigate how the social priorities of male plains zebra
(Equus burchelli) depend on reproductive state. An adult male is either a bachelor, and lacking mating access, or a stallion defending a harem.
Multiple harems and bachelor males aggregate in larger herds. Herds frequently split and merge, affording males opportunities
to change associates. Over a 4-year period, we sampled the herd associations in a population of 500–700 zebras. To isolate
the effects of reproductive state on male social behavior, we account for potential confounding factors: changes in population
size, grouping tendencies, and sampling intensity. We develop a generally applicable permutation procedure, which allows us
to test the null hypothesis that social behavior is independent of male status. Averaging over all individuals in the population,
we find that a typical bachelor is found in herds containing significantly more adults, bachelors, and stallions than the
herds of a typical stallion. Further, bachelors’ bonds with each other are more persistent over time than those among stallions.
These results suggest that bachelors form cohesive cliques, in which we may expect cooperative behaviors to develop. Stallion–stallion
associations are more diffuse, and less conducive to long-term cooperation.

A comprehensive laboratory investigation was performed on municipal solid waste (MSW) from a landfill located in northern California using a large-scale triaxial (TX) apparatus. An improved, standardized waste specimen preparation method was developed and used to prepare 27 large-scale TX specimens (d=300mm, h=600-630mm). The effects of waste composition, confining stress, unit weight, loading rate, and stress path on the drained stress-strain response of MSW were investigated. Waste composition has a significant effect on its stress-strain response. The commonly observed upward curvature of the stress-strain response of specimens composed of larger-sized waste materials results from the fibrous constituents (primarily paper, plastic and wood) reinforcing the waste matrix. This effect is greatest when the MSW specimen is sheared across the long axis of the fibrous particles. Due to this significant strain hardening effect and waste's in situ stress state, a limiting strain failure criterion of 5% axial strain from the K(o) field consolidation state is judged to be most appropriate. Results from this test program and data from the literature indicate that the TX compression secant friction angle of MSW varies from 34° to 44°, with 39° as a best estimate, at a confining stress of one atmosphere (assuming c=0). The friction angle decreases as confining stress increases. The friction angles measured in this testing program are representative of failure surfaces that are oriented at an angle to the predominant orientation of the long axis of the fibrous waste particles. These friction angles are higher than those obtained in direct shear tests where shearing typically occurs parallel to the orientation of the fibrous waste particles. 相似文献
