The pygidial gland secretion of the rove beetle genera Stenus Latreille and Dianous Leach is composed of pyridine and piperidine-derived alkaloids and several terpene compounds. Two-choice bioassays with ants and fish, as well as agar diffusion assays, revealed that the secretion compounds are capable of deterring predators and protecting the beetles from infestation with microorganisms. In addition, the beetles use the secretion for rapid movements on the water surface, a process called skimming. Thus, originally developed to chemically defend the sensitive unprotected abdomen from predator attacks, the secretion of recent Steninae can be designated as multifunctional. Four of the alkaloid compounds occur as different configurational isomers in the secretion. Two-choice tests showed that ants discriminate between stereoisomers of stenusine, while there was no effect visible on bacteria in agar diffusion assays. Furthermore, there are evolutionary trends within the Steninae concerning the secretion composition, as some of the alkaloids primarily occur in phylogenetically basal species, while others are mainly restricted to derived species. 相似文献

The distribution and population structure of the eurybathic gorgonian Corallium rubrum were studied off Cap de Creus (Costa Brava, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea). Red coral is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea
and the adjacent NE Atlantic coast, where it has been over exploited for centuries. This study presents, the first quantitative
data on the spatial distribution and structure of a population extending between 50 (common SCUBA limits) and 230 m depth,
and compared it with shallow populations previously studied in the same area. Different remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and
two methodological approaches were employed during four cruises between 2002 and 2006: 1-Extensive surveys: sea to coast transects
in which red coral density and patch frequency were recorded; 2-Intensive surveys, in which parameters describing colony morphology
were recorded. Most of the hard substrate between 50 and 85 m depth was inhabited by red coral colonies, showing a patch frequency
of 8.3 ± 7.9 SD patches per 100 m-transect (total transect area: 34 m2), and within-patch colony densities of 16–376 colonies m−2 (mean of 43 ± 53 colonies m−2). Below 120 m depth red coral was less abundant, and rather than forming dense patches as in shallow water, isolated colonies
were more common. The population structure differed between sites that are easily accessible to red coral fishermen, and remote
ones (both at similar depth, 60–80 m), as colonies in easily accessible locations were smaller in height and diameter, and
showed a less developed branching pattern. At shallower locations (10–50 m depth) the population structure was significantly
different from those at deeper locations, due to the heavy harvesting pressure they are exposed to in the shallows. Twenty-five
to forty-six percentage of the deeper colonies were taller than 6 cm, while only 7–16% of the shallow water colonies exceeded
6 cm colony height. Forty-six to seventy-nine percentage of the colonies in deeper waters were large enough to be legally
harvested, while only 9–20% of the shallow water colonies met the 7 mm legal basal diameter to be collected. The branching
pattern was also better developed in deeper colonies, as up to 16% of the colonies showed fourth order branches, compared
to less than 1% of the shallow water colonies (of which 96% consisted of only one single branch). The results thus confirm
that C. rubrum populations above 50 m depth are exposed to a higher harvesting intensity than deeper populations in the same area. 相似文献

Knowledge of the structure of networks of social interactions is important for understanding the evolution of cooperation,
transmission of disease, and patterns of social learning, yet little is known of how environmental, ecological, or behavioural
factors relate to such structures within groups. We observed grooming, dominance, and foraging competition interactions in
eight groups of wild meerkats (Suricata suricatta) and constructed interaction networks for each behaviour. We investigated relationships between networks for different social
interactions and explored how group attributes (size and sex ratio), individual attributes (tenure of dominants), and ecological
factors (ectoparasite load) are related to variation in network structure. Network structures varied within a group according
to interaction type. Further, network structure varied predictably with group attributes, individual attributes, and ecological
factors. Networks became less dense as group size increased suggesting that individuals were limited in their number of partners.
Groups with more established dominant females were more egalitarian in their grooming and foraging competition interactions,
but more despotic in their dominance interactions. The distribution of individuals receiving grooming became more skewed at
higher parasite loads, but more equitable at low parasite loads. We conclude that the pattern of interactions between members
of meerkat groups is not consistent between groups but instead depends on general attributes of the group, the influence of
specific individuals within the group, and ecological factors acting on group members. We suggest that the variation observed
in interaction patterns between members of meerkat groups may have fitness consequences both for individual group members

Research findings suggest that maternal employment exerts no consistent detrimental effects on children. In this study, the moderating role of employment commitment and child sex on the relationship between maternal employment status and child behavior is investigated. Mothers and teachers provided behavioral ratings for 185 elementary school children (M age = 9.42 years). Employment commitment moderated the influence of employment status on mothers' and teachers' ratings of children's attention problems and immaturity: Children whose mothers' employment status and commitment were not congruent were less attentive and more immature than those whose mothers' employment status and commitment were congruent. The statistical and applied significance of these results is suggested, as is the possibility that mother-child interactions mediate the manner in which incongruencies between employment status and employment commitment influence children's inattention-immaturity. 相似文献

China has been committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. China’s pledge of carbon neutrality will play an essential role in galvanising global climate action, which has been largely deferred by the Covid-19 pandemic. China’s carbon neutrality could reduce global warming by approximately 0.2–0.3 °C and save around 1.8 million people from premature death due to air pollution. Along with domestic benefits, China’s pledge of carbon neutrality is a “game-changer” for global climate action and can inspire other large carbon emitters to contribute actively to mitigate carbon emissions, particularly countries along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) routes. In order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, it is necessary to decarbonise all sectors in China, including energy, industry, transportation, construction, and agriculture. However, this transition will be very challenging, because major technological breakthroughs and large-scale investments are required. Strong policies and implementation plans are essential, including sustainable demand, decarbonizing electricity, electrification, fuel switching, and negative emissions. In particular, if China can peak carbon emissions earlier, it can lower the costs of the carbon neutral transition and make it easier to do so over a longer time horizon. China’s pledge of carbon neutrality by 2060 and recent pledges at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) are significant contributions and critical steps for global climate action. Predictors of employee aggression against coworkers, subordinates, and supervisors were studied in a sample of 136 men employed full‐time. Person behaviors (history of aggression, amount of alcohol consumed) predicted aggression against a coworker. In contrast, aggression against a supervisor was predicted by two perceived workplace factors (procedural justice, workplace surveillance). However, neither person behaviors nor perceived workplace factors predicted aggression against a subordinate. In addition, person behaviors and perceived workplace factors interacted to predict aggression. First, procedural justice interacted with amount of alcohol consumed in predicting both aggression against a coworker and aggression against a subordinate. Secondly, both job security and procedural justice interacted with history of aggression in predicting aggression against a subordinate. Finally, job security and amount of alcohol consumed interacted to predict aggression against a subordinate. Results suggest that both the understanding and prediction of employee aggression will be enhanced by taking into account the target of employee aggression, and by including both perceived workplace factors and person behaviors as predictor variables. AbstractObjective: In order to introduce automated vehicles on public roads, it is necessary to ensure that these vehicles are safe to operate in traffic. One challenge is to prove that all physically possible variations of situations can be handled safely within the operational design domain of the vehicle. A promising approach to handling the set of possible situations is to identify a manageable number of logical scenarios, which provide an abstraction for object properties and behavior within the situations. These can then be transferred into concrete scenarios defining all parameters necessary to reproduce the situation in different test environments.Methods: This article proposes a framework for defining safety-relevant scenarios based on the potential collision between the subject vehicle and a challenging object, which forces the subject vehicle to depart from its planned course of action to avoid a collision. This allows defining only safety-relevant scenarios, which can directly be related to accident classification. The first criterion for defining a scenario is the area of the subject vehicle with which the object would collide. As a second criterion, 8 different positions around the subject vehicle are considered. To account for other relevant objects in the scenario, factors that influence the challenge for the subject vehicle can be added to the scenario. These are grouped as action constraints, dynamic occlusions, and causal chains.Results: By applying the proposed systematics, a catalog of base scenarios for a vehicle traveling on controlled-access highways has been generated, which can directly be linked to parameters in accident classification. The catalog serves as a basis for scenario classification within the PEGASUS project.Conclusions: Defining a limited number of safety-relevant scenarios helps to realize a systematic safety assurance process for automated vehicles. Scenarios are defined based on the point of the potential collision of a challenging object with the subject vehicle and its initial position. This approach allows defining scenarios for different environments and different driving states of the subject vehicle using the same mechanisms. In order to isolate novel bacteria able to degrade alpha-halocarboxylic acids a variety of culturing strategies were implemented. Eight pure cultures were obtained and were found to be associated with the Gram negative Proteobacteria and the Gram positive Bacillus and Enterococcus genera. Furthermore, several strains were obtained which were able to degrade the DL-halocarboxylic acids anaerobically. Molecular analysis of the pure cultures led us to conclude that they may possess novel enzymes involved in the biodegradation of the alpha-halocarboxylic acids. These results are the first for nearly 40 years to describe the isolation of Gram positive isolates on an alpha-halocarboxylic acid as the sole source of carbon and energy, which also show the ability to de-toxify the test substrate by releasing chloride. 相似文献

Greenhouse gas emissions from Canadian peat extraction, 1990-2000: a life-cycle analysis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study uses life-cycle analysis to examine the net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Canadian peat industry for the period 1990-2000. GHG exchange is estimated for land-use change, peat extraction and processing, transport to market, and the in situ decomposition of extracted peat. The estimates, based on an additive GHG accounting model, show that the peat extraction life cycle emitted 0.54 x 10(6) t of GHG in 1990, increasing to 0.89 x 10(6) t in 2000 (expressed as CO2 equivalents using a 100-y time horizon). Peat decomposition associated with end use was the largest source of GHGs, comprising 71% of total emissions during this 11-y period. Land use change resulted in a switch of the peatlands from a GHG sink to a source and contributed an additional 15%. Peat transportation was responsible for 10% of total GHG emissions, and extraction and processing contributed 4%. It would take approximately 2000 y to restore the carbon pool to its original size if peatland restoration is successful and the cutover peatland once again becomes a net carbon sink. 相似文献
