Little is known about the fate of antimicrobials during common agricultural waste handling procedures. To better define the potential scope of this problem, concentrations of antimicrobials throughout the waste treatment process were estimated based on known antimicrobial usage, and the resulting predictions of high antimicrobial concentrations indicated the need for further investigation. Samples from building pits, a solids settling basin, a holding pond, and soil amended with waste treatment byproducts were therefore analyzed for traditional chemical parameters and macrolide, lincosamide, and tetracycline antimicrobials. Substantial improvements in water quality were observed during the treatment process. While the macrolide tylosin was not detected, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, and lincomycin were found at high concentrations throughout the waste treatment process. Oxytetracycline and lincomycin were also detected in soil from a field amended with waste treatment byproducts. 相似文献

Summary We observed in the field how resident females of the social wasp, Polistes fuscatus, treated female nestmates, non-nestmate first cousins, and unrelated non-nestmates. Behavioral observations were made 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 weeks after the emergence of a colony's first workers. Resident females were highly tolerant of female nestmates but highly intolerant of unrelated non-nestmates throughout the post-worker-emergence phase of the colony cycle. First cousins were treated either highly tolerantly or highly intolerantly, although most cousins ( 63%) were treated highly intolerantly. The treatment of cousins suggests that they are treated either tolerantly (like nestmates) or intolerantly (like unrelated non-nestmates) depending on whether they fall above or below an acceptance threshold, respectively. Resident females did not significantly change their tolerance nestmates, first cousins, and unrelated females between different observation periods. However, all conspecifics were generally treated the most intolerantly 11 weeks post-worker-emergence, a time in the colony cycle when combs no longer contain brood. This decreased tolerance and its associated variance patterns late in the colony cycle are consistent with a more restrictive acceptance threshold. The optimal level of the acceptance threshold appears to be a compromise between the fitness consequences of accepting unrelated non-nestmates and rejecting one's nestmates. In a laboratory study, resident females were equally tolerant of female nestmates on and off the comb but significantly less tolerant of unrelated females on the comb than off the comb. Thus, females can modify their tolerance rapidly in different recognition contexts. In a second laboratory study, resident females were equally intolerant of unrelated females, regardless of whether they were from colonies 50 m or 50 km distant.Offprint requests to: G.J. Gamboa 相似文献

We synthesized nine studies that examined the influence of land use at different spatial scales in structuring biotic assemblages
and stream channel characteristics in southeastern Minnesota streams. Recent studies have disagreed about the relative importance
of catchment versus local characteristics in explaining variation in fish assemblages. Our synthesis indicates that both riparian-
and catchment-scale land use explained significant variation in water quality, channel morphology, and fish distribution and
density. Fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages can be positively affected by increasing the extent of perennial riparian
and upland vegetation. Our synthesis is robust; more than 425 stream reaches were examined in an area that includes a portion
of three ecoregions. Fishes ranged from coldwater to warmwater adapted. We suggest that efforts to rehabilitate stream system
form and function over the long term should focus on increasing perennial vegetation in both riparian areas and uplands and
on managing vegetation in large, contiguous blocks.

ABSTRACT: Benthic macroinvertebrate samples representing 151 taxa were collected in August 1995 to examine the linkage between land use, water quality, and aquatic biointegrity in seven tributaries of the Blackfoot River watershed, Montana. The tributaries represent silvicultural (timber harvesting), agricultural (irrigated alfalfa and hay and livestock grazing), and wilderness land uses. A 2.4 km (1.5 mile) reach of a recently restored tributary also was sampled for comparison with the other six sites. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to characterize the seven subwatersheds and estimate soil erosion, using the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation, and sediment delivery. The wilderness stream had the highest aquatic biointegrity. Two agricultural streams had the largest estimated soil erosion and sediment delivery rates, the greatest habitat impairment from nonpoint source pollution, and the most impoverished macroinvertebrate communities. The silvicultural subwatersheds had greater rates of estimated soil erosion and sediment delivery and lower aquatic biointegrity than the wilderness reference site but evinced better conditions than the agricultural sites. A multiple-use (forestry, grazing, and wildlife management) watershed and the restored site ranked between the silvicultural and agricultural sites. This spectrum of land use and aquatic biointegrity illustrates both the challenges and opportunities that define watershed management. 相似文献

Selective mortality, whether caused naturally by predation or through the influence of harvest practices, initiates changes within populations when individuals possessing certain heritable traits have increased fitness. Theory predicts that increased mortality rates will select for changes in a number of different life history characteristics. For example, fishing often targets larger individuals and has been shown repeatedly to alter population size structure and growth rates, and the timing of maturation. For sex-changing species, selective fishing practices can affect additional traits such as the mature population sex ratio and the timing of sexual transformation. Using historical comparisons, we examined the effects of exploitation on life history characteristics of California sheephead, Semicossyphus pulcher, a temperate protogynous (female-male sex changer) labrid that inhabits nearshore rocky environments from central California, USA, to southern Baja California, Mexico. Recreational fishing intensified and an unregulated commercial live-fish fishery developed rapidly in southern California between the historical and current studies. Collections of S. pulcher from three locations (Bahia Tortugas, Catalina Island, and San Nicolas Island) in 1998 were compared with data collected 20-30 years previously to ascertain fishery-induced changes in life history traits. At Bahia Tortugas, where fishing by the artisanal community remained light and annual survivorship stayed high, we observed no changes in size structure or shifts in the timing of maturation or the timing of sex change. In contrast, where recreational (Catalina) and commercial (San Nicolas) fishing intensified and annual survivorship correspondingly declined, males and females shifted significantly to smaller body sizes, females matured earlier and changed sex into males at both smaller sizes and younger ages and appeared to have a reduced maximum lifespan. Mature sex ratios (female:male) increased at San Nicolas, despite a twofold reduction in the mean time spent as a mature female. Proper fisheries management requires measures to prevent sex ratio skew, sperm limitation, and reproductive failure because populations of sequential hermaphrodites are more sensitive to size-selective harvest than separate-sex species. This is especially true for S. pulcher, where different segments of the fishery (commercial vs. recreational) selectively target distinct sizes and therefore sexes in different locations. 相似文献

Detailed surveys of intertidal sediments have been performed along the north and south shores of the Inner Clyde estuary, UK. Surface sediment data reveal significant spatial variation in Cr content and an association with major sediment characteristics and location within the estuary. Depth variation for Cr and other heavy metals cannot be explained by variation in major geochemical controls such as grain size and organic matter and highlights the impact of historical contamination on sediment quality. These elevated levels at depth may still have environmental impact through redox-reactivity, in association with iron and manganese. Sequential extraction of sediments and pore water analysis of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) provide detailed information on release potential from the sediments. The implication of Cr mobility for biota in the estuary has been assessed by the analysis of a common marine bivalve, Mytilus edulis (Blue Mussel) and a burrowing polychaete, Nereis diversicolor (rag worm) from a number of survey sites. Bioconcentration factors for Mytilus indicate that the weakly held portion of sediment Cr is available for uptake and in the case of Nereis, bioaccumulation appears to be inhibited by sediment organic matter. 相似文献

Detailed ultrasound examination of the placentae from 293 consecutive women requesting first-trimester chorionic villus sampling (CVS) showed evidence of intraplacental sonolucent spaces with varying density in 42.3 per cent of these placentae. Their presence, however, did not complicate the subsequent course of these women's pregnancies. Their prime significance relates to CVS, where inadvertent entry into these areas can lead to bleeding and contamination of the villus specimens with blood. A search for these spaces should be made before sampling, and when present, they should be avoided wherever possible. 相似文献

Summary Previously we reported that inter-litter competition reduces the survival of pups born to pairs of female rats living and breeding in the same nesting environment. Inter-litter competition occurred when females gave birth asynchronously; specifically, when a female gave birth in the presence of 15 to 28-day-old pups, her newborn pups were likely to die as a result of nest intrusion by the older pups. In contrast, inter-litter competition occurred rarely when the two females gave birth synchronously. Because theories of facultative sex ratio adjustment predict that mothers giving birth in unfavorable circumstances should bias their offspring towards the more viable or less expensive sex, we predicted that litters born asynchronously would be female biased. Conversely, we also predicted that females giving birth under favorable conditions, i.e., synchronously, would bias their litters toward males. We found a female bias in asynchronous litters, but did not find a male bias in synchronous litters. Moreover, in contrast to other reports in the literature, the female bias in asynchronous litters was achieved without a reduction in litter size. Based on correlational data, we suggest several mechanisms that could produce this female bias: conditions at fertilization and implantation, time since the male last mated and number of pups suckling concurrently during gestation.

Thirty-nine (2.3 per cent) of 1724 chromosome studies from diagnostic chorionic villus samplings (CVS) done between 1983 and 1990 showed either level III (true) mosaicism (1.2 per cent) or level II (pseudo-) mosaicism (1.1 per cent) for chromosomal aneuploidy. Follow-up information on these 39 pregnancies was collected from questionnaires to families, paediatricians, and obstetricians. For all cases in which the pregnancy was continued and further testing was accomplished, the mosaicism was felt to be confined to the placenta. As compared with a control group of pregnancies evaluated by CVS with normal karyotypes, there was no increased incidence of pregnancy loss, congenital malformations, or developmental delay in the infants. Although intrauterine growth retardation occurred in several of the level III mosaic cases, adequate catch-up growth has been demonstrated. 相似文献
