The quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be a powerful sustainability measurement indicator for assessing environmental impacts of various operations, which can include remediation of chemically impacted media or construction projects. A carbon footprint calculator was developed and is presented in this article as one tool for applying sustainable practices to environmental remediation—specifically to assess the GHG footprint for remediation projects. The influence of fetal gender on the level in the first trimester of the serological markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and free beta human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) and on nuchal translucency is described for 2637 singleton pregnancies with normal outcome. Mean log MoM values for pregnancies with female and male fetuses were calculated using regression of log marker values on gestational age expressed as crown rump length and on maternal weight. The Cape bee is endemic to the winter rainfall region of South Africa where fires are an integral part of the ecology of the fynbos (heathland) vegetation. Of the 37 wild nests in pristine Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos in the Cape Point section of Table Mountain National Park that have been analyzed so far, only 22 could be accessed sufficiently to determine the existence of a propolis wall of which 68% had propolis walls which entirely enclosed their openings. The analysis of the 37 wild nests revealed that 78% occurred under boulders or in clefts within rocks, 11% in the ground, 8% in tree cavities, and 3% within shrubs. The analysis of 17 of these nests following a fire within the park revealed that the propolis walls materially protected the nests and retarded the fire with all the colonies surviving. The bees responded to the smoke by imbibing honey and retreating to the furthest recess of their nest cavity. The bees were required to utilize this honey for about 3 weeks after which fire-loving plants appeared and began flowering. Considerable resources were utilized in the construction of the propolis walls, which ranged in thickness from 1.5 to 40 mm (mean 5 mm). Its physical environment determines the nesting behavior of the Cape bee. The prolific use of propolis serves to insulate the nest from extremes of temperature and humidity, restricts entry, camouflages the nest, and acts as an effective fire barrier protecting nests established mostly under rocks in vegetation subjected to periodic fires. 相似文献

Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus distribution in particle size-fractionated separated pig and cattle slurry 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Solid liquid separation of animal slurry is a method to reduce the excess nutrient loads from intensive livestock production. Five different separation technologies (sedimentation, centrifugation, pressurized filtration, polymer flocculation and drainage, and iron chloride addition + polymer flocculation and drainage) were applied to pig and cattle slurry in a laboratory study. Separation efficiencies of mass, dry matter (DM), N, and P were measured. Particle size fractionation of the solid fractions was performed by subjecting them to wet fractionation and C, organic N (N(org)), and P contents were subsequently measured. Chemical pretreatment with polymer before gravity drainage separated DM, total N, and P from raw pig and cattle slurry with the highest efficiencies. Sedimentation and centrifugation separated P from pig and cattle slurries with higher simple separation efficiencies (0.77 and 0.70, respectively) compared with pressurized filtration (0.15 and 0.37). Pressurized filtration transferred the lowest masses (14 and 18%) to the solid fractions. Solid fractions from pig slurry generally contained higher concentrations of P and C compared with cattle slurry solid fractions. The majority of C in solid fractions was present in particles > 25 microm, whereas N and P were present in larger proportions in particles < 25 microm. A multielectrolytic modified carbon electrode (MEMCE) was fabricated by the electrolytic-oxidation/reduction processes. First, the functional groups containing nitrogen atoms such as amino group were introduced by the electrode oxidation of carbon felt electrode in an ammonium carbamate aqueous solution, and next, this electrode was electroreduced in sulfuric acid. The redox waves between hydrogen ion and hydrogen molecule at highly positive potential range appeared in the cyclic voltammogram obtained by MEMCE. A coulometric cell using MEMCE with a catalytic activity of electrooxidation of hydrogen molecule was constructed and was used for the measurement of dissolved hydrogen. The typical current vs. time curve was obtained by the repetitive measurement of the dissolved hydrogen. These curves indicated that the measurement of dissolved hydrogen was finished completely in a very short time (ca. 10 sec). A linear relationship was obtained between the electrical charge needed for the electrooxidation process of hydrogen molecule and dissolved hydrogen concentration. This indicates that the developed coulometric method can be used for the determination of the dissolved hydrogen concentration. 相似文献
