Sand-trapping fences modify the character of the coastal landscape and change its spatial structure, image, and meaning. This
paper examines the relationship between these changes and fence usage at the municipal level, where most decisions about fence
deployment are made. Use of fences in 29 municipalities on the developed coast of New Jersey is examined over a 6-year period.
Interviews with municipal officers indicate that wooden slat sand-trapping fences are used primarily to build dunes to provide
protection against wave uprush and flooding, but they are also used to control pedestrian traffic and demarcate territory.
These uses result in changes in landforms and habitats. An aerial video inventory of fences taken in 2002 indicates that 82%
of the shoreline had fences and 72% had dunes. Single and double straight fence rows are the most commonly used. Fences are
often built to accomplish a specific primary purpose, but they can cause many different and often unanticipated changes to
the landscape. The effects of a sand fence change through time as the initial structure traps sand, creates a dune that is
colonized by vegetation, and becomes integrated into the environment by increasing topographic variability and aesthetic and
habitat value. Sand fences can be made more compatible with natural processes by not placing them in locations where sources
of wind blown sand are restricted or in unnatural shore perpendicular orientations. Symbolic fences are less expensive, are

Ozone-sensitive (NC-S clone) and resistant plants (NC-R clone) of Trifolium repens and Centaurea jacea were exposed to moderate ozone concentrations in ambient air. The aim of this study was the investigation of the relation between ozone-sensitivity and leaf concentrations of antioxidants (ascorbic acid, total phenolics and total antioxidant capacity). NC-R clone showed the highest concentrations of antioxidants with 50-70% more ascorbic acid than NC-S. NC-R had about 5 times more ascorbic acid in the young leaves and 9 times more in the old leaves than Centaurea. In a fumigation experiment with acute ozone stress (100 nl L(-1)) the antioxidant levels changed profoundly. The ozone-injured leaves of NC-S had 6-8 times more total phenolics than uninjured leaves. Generally older leaves had lower antioxidant concentrations and were more prone to ozone injury than younger leaves. The story of the discovery of the neutrino as is well known, has been distorted by a number of legends. The factual information now available from the Pauli Correspondence shows the neutrino so to speak, as a by-product of a much more comprehensive revision of the foundations of physics, to which end the efforts of several great theoreticians were directed in order to overcome the theoretical difficulties confronting nuclear physics at the beginning of the 1930's. The well known letter from Pauli to the “radioactive ladies and gentlemen” outlines merely the properties of a particle postulated by this theory. Had the complete theory been revealed these would have won little attention because of the inherent difficulties it still contained. Nevertheless the predicted qualities of this hypothetical particle corresponded exactly with observational data and allowed in addition the preservation of the tried and tested conservation laws.
