Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans in soil in the vicinity of a landfill 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Estonia still has no waste incineration facilities, which would act as substantial sources of dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) pollution. As landfill fires may serve as sources of dioxins, we focused on the concentrations of PCDD and PCDF in soil samples taken in the vicinity of the landfill located at south-east Estonia in the course of our inventory. Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were studied in five soil samples taken in the vicinity of the Laguja landfill in south-east Estonia. The four soil samples were taken in southern, eastern, western and northern parts not further than 300 m from the landfill, and one sample was taken at the distance of 3 km from the landfill. The PCDD/F concentrations in all soil samples were at background level (0.64-2.33 pg I-TEQ WHO/g dry weight). To maintain this situation, the administrator of the landfill must avoid landfill fires, which are one of the reasons for the generation of dioxins and furans. 相似文献

Single-species tests allow the assessment of chronical effects of endocrine disruptors on organisms under laboratory conditions. In the current study, three-generation tests with Ceriodaphnia reticulata and Sida crystallina were carried out to examine the influence of the synthetic hormone 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE) on the reproduction of these cladoceran species. For each species, six different concentrations (10-500 microg/l EE) and two controls were tested with eight replicates for a duration of 4 weeks. The test was initiated by transferring one neonate individual into a test vessel which was incubated under standardized conditions. Every 2 days, the medium was renewed and life history parameters such as survivorship of the adults and juveniles, clutch size, first appearance and number of produced offspring were investigated. Acute toxicity tests showed that C. reticulata (EC50 (24 h) 1814 microg/l) was more sensitive towards the substance compared to S. crystallina (EC50 (24 h) >4100 microg/l). The juvenile phase of S. crystallina was significantly shorter at concentrations above 100 microg/l EE. For C. reticulata, 17alpha-ethinylestradiol caused a higher mortality of the newly hatched juveniles at EE concentrations above 200 microg/l. No effects were found for mortality of adult animals, birth rate, number of juveniles per female and net reproduction rate of S. crystallina and C. reticulata. Thus, sublethal effects on parental generation exposed to EE lead to disturbances in reproduction and to affection of their offspring. The enantiomeric ratios (ER) of alpha-HCH and o,p'-DDT ((+)-isomer concentration/(-)-isomer concentration) and o,p'-DDD (first eluting enantiomer/second enantiomer) were investigated in 112 human placentas from Finnish boys collected 1997-2001. Both o,p'-DDD and alpha-HCH showed changes in their ER depending on the total concentration of the compound in the sample. Their ERs are approaching a value close to racemic mixture (ER=1) at high concentrations. At low concentrations they often differ from 1. The relationship between concentration and ER is clearly identified and it has been shown that it is not affected by analytical uncertainty. This relationship appears to be important for assessing tissue- and species-specific exposure and risk and it may indicate whether net uptake or metabolic activity is dominant in exposure for the resulting exposure of the enantiomers. 相似文献

Notwithstanding the great importance of the salinity factor in the marine environment, the knowledge of influence of salinity on growth of marine benthic algae is very limited. Rate of growth (mg, cm2) and O2 output of the intertidal red algaPorphyra umbilicalis from Helgoland, North Sea, were measured during a 3 week culture in 3 different salinities (1/2-, 1- and 2-concentrated artificial sea water; Table 1). Under hypertonic conditions (2-concentrated sea water) growth rate and photosynthesis rate were depressed, compared to values obtained in normal concentrated sea water. Under hypotonic conditions (1/2-concentrated sea water), growth expressed in mg was the same as in normal concentrated sea water, or higher when expressed in cm3. Rate of O2 output was almost unaltered in one of the two experiments, lowered in the other. Cell size increased at higher salinity, while swelling of cell walls and intercellular substances as well as the intensity of colouring decreased with salinity. The discrepancies between growth and photosynthesis under hypotonic conditions cannot be completely explained by the observed influences of salinity on morphological structures (cell size, swelling of cell substances). Detailed studies on the time course of photosynthesis and respiration rates, and preparation of a metabolic balance for the algae are necessary. 相似文献

The coralline alga Phymatolithon calcareum was dredged from 13 m in the Kattegatt, Baltic Sea, in December, 1980, and its rate of calcification was measured by 45Ca++-uptake methods. Light-saturated calcification rates at 5°C ranged from 15.8 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the basal parts of the plants to 38.7 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the tips. These age gradients were not apparent when calcification rates were expressed on the basis of surface area. Experiments with salinity (10, 20, 30) and temperature (0°, 5°, 10°, 20°C) indicated that optimum conditions for calcification were at 30 S and at temperatures above 10°C. Salinity had a greater influence on calcification rate than did temperature, and there was a positive relationship between salinity and calcification rate at all temperatures. In 6 mo old cultures, salinity was again the important factor, with all plants remaining healthy at 30 except those at the highest temperature (20°C). These trends, and the low calcification rates at 10S (4.6 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 at 5°C to 8.6 g CaCO3g-1 dry wt h-1 at 20°C) suggest that low salinity may be the explanation for the general absence of P. calcareum from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. Short-term experiments in which salinity was kept constant while Ca++ concentration was altered, and experiments in which salinity was varied and Ca++ concentration kept constant, suggest that it is the calcium ion concentration and not salinity per se which affects calcification rates. 相似文献
