In the present study Bremen aerosol retrieval (BAER) columnar aerosol optical thickness (AOT) data, according to moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and medium resolution imaging sensor (MERIS) level 1 calibrated satellite data, have been compared with AOT data obtained with the MODIS and MERIS retrieval algorithms (NASA and ESA, respectively) and by AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET). Relatively good agreement is found between these different instruments and algorithms. The R2 and relative RMSD were 0.86 and 31% for MODIS when comparing with AERONET and 0.92 and 21% for MERIS. The aerosols investigated were influenced by low relative humidity. During this period, a relatively large range of aerosol loadings were detected; from continental background aerosol to particles emitted from agricultural fires. In this study, empirical relationships between BAER columnar AOT and ground-measured PM2.5 have been estimated. Linear relationships, with R2 values of 0.58 and 0.59, were obtained according to MERIS and MODIS data, respectively. The slopes of the regression of AOT versus PM2.5 are lower than previous studies, but this could easily be explained by considering the effect of hygroscopic growth. The present AOT–PM2.5 relationship has been applied on MERIS full resolution data over the urban area of Stockholm and the results have been compared with particle mass concentrations from dispersion model calculations. It seems that the satellite data with the 300 m resolution can resolve the expected increased concentrations due to emissions along the main highways close to the city. Significant uncertainties in the spatial distribution of PM2.5 across land/ocean boundaries were particularly evident when analyzing the high resolution satellite data. 相似文献

Summary Mating in the bushcricket Metaplastes ornatus Ramme 1931 entails a number of peculiar genital couplings that precede the transfer of the large spermatophore. During these phase-I couplings, the male introduces his specially structured subgenital plate into the female's genital chamber, performs back-and-forth movements, and turns her genital chamber inside out when he withdraws, whereupon the female carefully cleans her everted genital chamber with her mouthparts. During the last coupling (phase II) the male's subgenital plate is not introduced but the large spermatophore, which averages 22% of a male's body weight, is transferred. Counts of sperm in the spermathecae of females suggested that the phase-I couplings, which occur prior to spermatophore transfer, function to remove, or at least to reduce, the sperm of a female's previous mates. The form of the keel of the male's subgenital plate, its position within the female's genital tract during phase-I couplings, and the back-and-forth movements suggest that the male may stimulate release of sperm from the female's spermatheca by a mechanism similar to fertilization as eggs pass through the genital chamber during oviposition. 相似文献

To evaluate the consequences of irradiation on the vegetation of the Chernobyl region, gene expression was compared in morphologically normal and dwarf needles from the same Pinus sylvestris trees in a region where the absorbed dose was 3-5 Gy. To compare the levels of gene expression, arrays consisting of 373 Pinus taeda cDNAs were hybridized with labeled cDNA derived from normal and dwarf needles of P. sylvestris. Twelve genes were significantly (P<0.01) up- or down-regulated between normal and dwarf needles for all five trees taken together. Five of these, related to stress or development, were up- or down-regulated 1.25-1.7-fold in the dwarf needles. There were no significant differences in (137)Cs content in the normal and dwarf needles, or in elongation growth rate of seedlings raised under controlled conditions from seed derived from trees in the region that had received a radiation dose over the range 2-12 Gy. 相似文献

Surface incorporation of a liming agent in combination with compost or biosolids is a proven way to revegetate acidic minespoils, but little is known about the effect of the surface amendments on subsoil chemistry. We conducted a greenhouse column experiment to investigate how different surface amendments affected plant growth and subsoil chemistry in highly acidic minespoil material. Columns were filled with shale minespoil material (pH approximately 2.5), amended with CaCO3, CaSO4 x 2H2O (gypsum), and two rates of compost, and seeded with birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) and 'Kentucky 31' tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). We measured leachate and plant growth over a 170-d period with extensive irrigation. Without CaCO3, plants could only grow at the high compost rate (68.8 g kg(-1)), even though the soil pH in those treatments was below 3.5, indicating the capability of natural organic matter to detoxify Al(3+) by forming Al-organic matter complexes. Compost had no effect on the subsoil. When CaCO3 or gypsum was added to the surface, extractable Ca increased in the subsoil, but there was no relevant increase in subsoil pH. Even in the first 5 cm of subsoil material, extractable Al did not decrease very much, possibly because a jurbanite-like solid phase controlled subsoil Al(3+) activities. During the reclamation of highly acidic minespoil material one should therefore not expect significant effects of the surface treatment on the untreated subsoil. Patterns of activity and metabolism were investigated in larval Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) between December 1991 and July 1992: (1) throughout larval development; (2) between two genetically discrete populations (Scotian Shelf and Newfoundland) and (3) as a function of two different culture temperatures. During the yolk-sac stage (0 to 5 d post-hatch), changes in swimming speed were not related to mass-specific metabolic rates; no portion of the mass-specific oxygen consumption could be explained by changes in activity. In the mixed feeding stage (6 to 14 d posthatch), there was a tendency for oxygen consumption to be related to changes in swimming speed. In the exogenous feeding stage (>14 d post-hatch), oxygen consumption significantly increased with swimming speed. These ontogenetic patterns of activity and metabolism were the same for larvae from the Scotian Shelf and Newfoundland populations. However, over the entire larval life and among ontogenetic stages, the metabolic cost of activity (mass-specific O2 consumption/swimming speed) of Scotian Shelf larvae was significantly higher than that of Newfoundland larvae. When cod larvae, that had developed at 5°C, were acutely exposed to 10°C, Scotian Shelf larvae had a higher intrinsic cost of activity than Newfoundland larvae, over the entire larval life. During the exogenous feeding stage, the mean metabolic cost of activity for Newfoundland larvae raised at 10°C and tested at 10°C was significantly higher and more variable than that of larvae raised at lower temperatures. However, the metabolic cost of activity of larvae raised and tested at 10°C was not significantly different between source populations. Together these findings suggest that differences in swimming energetics reflect changing energy requirements for activity among ontogenetic stages, and reflect adaptation to regional environments among genetically discrete populations. 相似文献
