Local mate competition (LMC) has been postulated to be the primary factor of female-biased sex allocation. In animals such as aphids that exhibit seasonal alternations of clonal and sexual reproduction, there is a high possibility of intra-clonal mating and LMC. This possibility is more plausible for more fecund clones, but outbreeding is predicted for less fecund clones. We hypothesize that clones that are more fecund will gain higher fitness returns by reducing investment in males because of more intense LMC among clonal males. We tested this hypothesis by elucidating the clonal sex allocation patterns of the galling aphid Kaltenbachiella japonica, in which inbreeding and LMC appear to be common. Winged mothers that emerge from a gall, belonging to the same clone, produced males and sexual females asexually on a branch, without dispersing to other trees. The heavier the gall, the more winged mothers were produced from the gall. Individual mothers produced a constant number of males and a variable number of females. The clonal sex allocation to males was 39.8?%, on average, and decreased with increasing gall weight. This result showed that clones that were more fecund exhibited more female-biased sex allocation and thus supported our hypothesis. Furthermore, our results corroborated Stubblefield and Seger’s hypothesis for sex allocation in patch structure rather than Yamaguchi’s constant male hypothesis. We conclude that K. japonica clones are able to adjust their sex allocation patterns adaptively depending on the quality of resources in the galls.  相似文献

This paper has developed a method for forecasting the future paths of genuine savings (GS) with and without carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions constraints. GS calculations require shadow prices, which can be endogenously determined for variables and constraints in a model. However, in case of a ‘business as usual’ model (BAU), the shadow prices required for calculating GS without constraints show theoretically zero. This research derives the shadow prices required to measure GS for the BAU case as a function of several variables available in the optimal (economically efficient) case. This function is estimated from endogenously obtained variables from a model with environmental constraints. Subsequently, this function is used to calculate shadow prices with and without CO2 constraints, which are further employed to compute future paths of GS according to two methods applied in the papers by Arrow et al. We successfully estimated GS (or GSnt; GS with changes in population and technology) under the BAU case, however, suggest that GS (or GSnt) measures depend, to a great extent, on the time span under consideration (truncation year) for wealth accounting and the accounting methods by Arrows’ papers used for its estimation. In some cases, especially according to the methodology used by Arrow’s paper in 2004 using adjusted consumption in wealth accounting, the sign of GS (or GSnt) changes from negative to positive when changes in total factor productivity are taken into consideration. These aspects should be explored before measuring (un)sustainability of a particular path based on the GS (or GSnt) indicator.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of hygiene indicator bacteria during the biostimulation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated ethene. We showed the state of dechlorination activity and behavior of microbial structure by the addition of Escherichia coli (E. coli) as hygiene indicator bacteria in a contaminated groundwater sample. Dechlorination of tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene to cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) within 14 days took place similarly both with and without the addition of E. coli. This indicated that inhibition of against dechlorinating activity of corresponding dechlorinating bacteria was not caused by E. coli. Structural change of the bacterial community was analyzed both before and after dechlorination using a denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and clone library. The result of DGGE detected E. coli only at day 0. A sample at day 14 after dechlorination detected Pseudomonas putida, Anaerosinus glycerini, and Clostridium genus but not E. coli. The result of the clone library also showed an identical profile. Detection of E. coli using desoxycholate media was decreased from 2.3 × 106 cells/ml to 6.0 × 103 cells/ml during day 14. These results suggest that biostimulation of groundwater contaminated by chlorinated ethene in the presence of hygiene bacteria caused the dechlorination without activity inhibition and decrease of dechlorinating bacteria.  相似文献

Subject performance in reading characters on mobile phone liquid crystal displays was researched by using (a) English sentences with 3 or 4 different sizes of characters on 2 types of displays with different resolutions(n = 23; age = 31.0 ± 6.0 years), (b) Japanese characters in 3 different sizes and 2 types of font (n = 98; age = 44.5 ± 18.5 years), and (c) Japanese characters vertically enlarged 1—4 times (n = 120; age = 46.9 ± 18.6 years). Subjective evaluation, reading speed, number of reading errors, and viewing distance were recorded. Readability was higher with higher resolution displays, and with Gothic than with Mincho font in Japanese. Young subjects shortened the viewing distance as characters became smaller, whereas elderly subjects increased the viewing distance irrespective of the size of characters. Characters of 3–5 mm are appropriate for the young but inadequate for the elderly. Readability of Japanese characters improved when they were vertically enlarged to approximately twice the width.  相似文献

For insects pupating in the soil, the day/night temperature cycle may provide a primary time cue (Zeitgeber) for adult eclosion to occur at an appropriate time of the day. In the soil, however, the phase of temperature cycle is delayed with depth because of the low heat conductivity of the soil. Therefore pupae located deeper in the soil may compensate for the depth-dependent phase delay of Zeitgeber to avoid mistimed emergence. We examined the adult eclosion timing of the onion fly, Delia antiqua, pupating at different depths in soil and under various thermoperiods in the laboratory to determine if such compensation indeed occurs. We found that D. antiqua is able to compensate for the depth-dependent phase delay of the Zeitgeber by advancing the eclosion timing in response to the amplitude of the temperature cycle decreasing with depth.  相似文献

Fungus-growing ants (Attini) live in an obligate mutualism with the fungi they cultivate for food. Because of the obligate nature of this relationship, the success of the ants is directly dependent on their ability to grow healthy fungus gardens. Attine ants have evolved complex disease management strategies to reduce their gardens exposure to potential parasitic microbes, to prevent the establishment of infection in their gardens, and to remove infected garden sections. The infrabuccal pocket, a filtering device located in the oral cavity of all ants, is an integral part of the mechanisms that leaf-cutter ants use to prevent the invasion and spread of general microbial parasites and the specific fungal-garden parasite Escovopsis. Fungus-growing ants carefully groom their garden, collecting general debris and pathogenic spores of Escovopsis in their infrabuccal pocket, the contents of which are later expelled in dump chambers inside the nest or externally. In this study we examined how a phylogenetically diverse collection of attine ants treat their infrabuccal pellets. Unlike leaf-cutters that deposit their infrabuccal pellets directly in refuse piles, ants of the more basal attine lineages stack their infrabuccal pellets in piles located close to their gardens, and a separate caste of workers is devoted to the construction, management, and eventual disposal of these piles.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism exists in the shape and the structure of the forewings of the cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus). However, the functional significance of the wings in the G. bimaculatus female has been unclear. In common blue butterflies (Polyommatus icarus), wings in females have been suggested as being important for attracting males. To test whether female crickets need wings for conspecific males to recognize them and initiate mating behavior, we removed all wings from females and observed the behavior of males towards them. Most males (87.5%) showed mating behavior towards the wingless females: they produced courtship song and transferred spermatophores to the wingless females. Similarly, 88.5% of the males showed mating behavior towards intact females. When males were placed with both a wingless female and an intact female, no significant difference was detected in male mate choice. The findings demonstrate that the wing of the G. bimaculatus female is not necessary for female recognition by conspecific males and the initiation of male mating behavior, and that it is not important in male mate choice.  相似文献
