The concentrations of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) constituents including benzene were measured in the living rooms of 10 nonsmoking households and 20 households with at least one smoker situated in the city and suburbs of Munich. In the city, the median benzene levels during the evening, when all household members were at home, were 8.1 and 10.4 μg/m3 in nonsmoking and smoking homes, respectively. The corresponding levels of 3.5 and 4.6 μg/m3 were considerably lower in the suburbs. Median time-integrated 1-week benzene concentrations in the city were 10.6 μg/m3 in nonsmoking homes and 13.1 μg/m3 in smoking homes. In the suburbs, the corresponding values were 3.2 and 5.6 μg/m3. While the benzene concentrations in nonsmoking homes located in the city were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in suburban nonsmoking households, no difference was found between smoking and nonsmoking households located either in the city or in the suburbs. Individual exposures to benzene and to specific markers for tobacco smoke of all household members (82 nonsmokers and 32 smokers) were determined by questionnaire, personal monitoring, and biomonitoring. Within the city, the benzene exposure determined by personal samplers was 11.8 μg/m3 for nonsmokers living in nonsmoking homes and 13.3 μg/m3 for nonsmokers in smoking homes. The corresponding values for nonsmokers living in the suburbs were 5.9 and 6.9 μg/m3, respectively. Neither difference was statistically significant. Nonsmokers living in nonsmoking households in the city had significantly higher exposure to benzene compared to their counterparts living in the suburbs (personal samplers: 11.8 vs 5.9 μg/m3, p < 0.001; benzene in exhalate: 2.4 vs. 1.1 μg/m3, p < 0.05; trans,trans-muconic acid excretion in urine: 92 vs. 54 μg/g creatinine, p < 0.05). Nonsmokers from all households with smokers were significantly more exposed to benzene than nonsmokers living in the nonsmoking households (personal samplers: 13.2 vs. 7.0 μg/m3, p < 0.05; benzene in exhalate: 2.6 vs. 1.8 μg/m3, p < 0.01; trans,trans-muconic acid excretion in urine: 73 vs. 62 μg/g creatinine), but the contribution of ETS to the total benzene exposure was relatively low compared to that from other sources. Analysis of variance showed that at most 15% of the benzene exposure of nonsmokers living in smoking homes was attributable to ETS. For nonsmokers living in nonsmoking households benzene exposure from ETS was insignificant. 相似文献
The European Economic Community Council Directive 80/779/EEC describes air quality limit values and guide values for sulfur dioxide and suspended particulates. However, article 10, paragraph 1 does not define well enough the reference method required, amongst others, for the gravimetric measurement of suspended particulates. It is explicity stated in article 10, paragraph 5 of the directive, that "the commission shall, in selected locations in the member states and in cooperation with the latter, carry out studies on the sampling...of suspended particulates. These studies shall be designed in particular to promote the harmonization of methods of sampling and analysis of these pollutants." Therefore, in a joint research program the Umweltbundesamt (grant #104 02263), the commission of European Communities (grant #84-B-6642-11-017-11-N) and the U.S. EPA (grant #2-432U-3580) funded the development of a reference dust sampler by the Fraunhofer-Institute of Toxicology and Aerosol Research (FhlTA, in Hannover, Federal Republic of Germany) in order: to study the particle size distribution of ambient air aerosol at a number of selected sites; to compare the results obtained with the reference dust sampler with those of particle samplers operated in Europe and the United States; to verify the applicability of wind tunnel results to sampling behaviour in the free atmosphere. 相似文献
Fly ash extracts were fed to male hamster (single dose), male rat (single dose and multiple dose), pregnant and lactating female rat (multiple dose). The retention of four isomers, 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 2,3,7,8-TCDF, 1,2,3,7,8-PnCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF, was studied in the liver of the adults, foetuses and liver of the sucklings.
Liver retention was structure dependent and different for both species. Transportation of the isomers via the mother milk was 50–100 times more effective than via the placenta.
After a single intravenous dose of fly ash extract to male rats the elimination of these four isomers was studied in the liver, during a period of 10 days. Elimination rates for 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-PnCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF were in the same range. Pharmacokinetic calculations were done on both tetra congeners, to obtain information about the validity of the published Ke values in the multiple dose experiments with male rats.
For 2,3,7,8-TCDF the Ke value was applicable, but for 2,3,7,8-TCDD the validity of the Ke could not be determined. 相似文献
In a preceding study it has been reported that the freshwater sponge Lubomirskia baicalensis, living in Lake Baikal (East Siberia), is composed of spicules forming a characteristic pattern which follows radiate accretive growth. Here we report that the spicules are synthesized by the enzyme silicatein, a protein which is related to cathepsin L. The cDNAs for silicatein and the related cathepsin L were isolated and used as probes to show that the mRNA levels of silicatein in the bases of the spicule skeleton of the animals are low, while the mRNA level of cathepsin L in this region exceeds that of the growing zone. This is the first comprehensive study on the importance of the axial filament/silicatein as an essential structural and functional component determining the growth and stability of demosponge spicules.Note: Sequences from Lubomirskia baicalensis have been deposited in the EMBL/GenBank; cDNAs for the putative silicatein (LBSILICA) are deposited under the accession no. AJ786771 and for cathepsin L (LBCATL) under the accession no. AJ786770. 相似文献
