Kaolin W from Lohrheim (51% Illite, 31% Kaolinite, 18% Quarz, no Carbon) was loaded with various amounts of heavy metal ions (0.11–6.0 mmol/100g Cu, Ni, Cd) from their nitrate solutions. In the next step the release of the bound metals was tested with or without aminoacids (penicillamine and histidine) in solutions of weak acidity or alkalinity. It was found an evident influence of the aminoacids to the metal release in dependence of metalcoating, metal-aminoacid-ratio and experimental pH. Especially in alkali environment a multiplication of the copper release (to a factor of 39 (pen) or 27 (his)) was observed. An increased nickel (factor 53) and cadmium release (factor 4.5) was found with histidine. In this cases 80 to 100% of the heavy metals were removed from the clay-mineral-surface. 相似文献

Background
Aim and Scope. Implementation of the European Union White Paper on chemicals policy shall provide more safety and more transparency in chemicals use. In the past, when assessing existing commercial substances there was often a lack of information in the fields of application of the chemicals and the exposures arising in those contexts. The White Paper therefore calls for ‘shared responsibility’. Processors and commercial users of substances are to be involved much more closely in the risk evaluation process than has hitherto been the case. They are to provide data on substance applications and exposures, and, to some extent, they are also to carry out exposure assessments and risk assessments themselves. By analysing case studies, the paper highlights the consequences of this approach.Results and Discussion
Fear has often been voiced that these new tasks will completely overburden small and medium-sized enterprises. It is assumed that many chemicals are no longer available for smallvolume applications, as — for cost reasons — producers do not include these applications in their registration. The wording of the White Paper is not precise enough to be able to appraise the costs that will be associated with the required intensified communication. In this situation, it is essential to analyse prototypical substances and their applications in order to gain an improved understanding of the principle of shared responsibility.Conclusions
The concrete study of several product chains has shown that the flow of information required between producers and users is very likely feasible within the context of the REACH system. For the producers of chemicals, the intensified communication will presumably make it simpler to procure information in the fields of application and exposures. However, in order to avoid users being overburdened, it will be important that registration requirements and focuses are shaped in a manner doing justice to practical realities. Users will need to undertake community-wide efforts on an industry federation and branch level. In this context, the protection of company know-how also needs to be ensured.Recommendation and Outlook
In practice, implementation of the principle of shared responsibility can lead to intensified communication among the producers and users of chemicals. This can greatly facilitate exposure assessments and risk assessments. There is a need to develop manageable procedures that can also be implemented by small and medium-sized enterprises. In most bushcrickets, males transfer a large spermatophore during copulation that is afterwards consumed by the female. In some species this nuptial gift enhances offspring fitness and is therefore believed to function as paternal investment. To determine whether this is the case, I examined whether a male's own offspring benefit from spermatophore consumption in the bushcricket Poecilimon veluchianus. Females that consumed a spermatophore produced offspring with increased residuals of dry weight compared to females that were prevented from feeding on the spermatophore. This beneficial effect of spermatophore consumption occurred within the first 4 days after copulation. An increased dry weight indicates higher energy reserves because offspring dry weight correlates significantly with the lifespan of starved larvae and because spermatophore consumption increased the lifespan of starved offspring. During egg-laying, females apply a liquid substance to the soil that hardens and probably serves as protection for the egg clutch. The amount of this substance correlated with the number of eggs laid but did not differ between spermatophore treatments. In P. veluchianus, females mate frequently and there is last-male sperm precedence. The spermatophore thus only constitutes paternal investment when offspring produced before female remating benefit from spermatophore consumption. The dry weight of offspring increased during the first 4 days after spermatophore consumption and thus within the natural remating interval. Using the focusing event framework, a comprehensive analysis of private households’ and businesses’ preparedness was undertaken in the aftermath of the 2002 and 2006 flood events on the Elbe River in Germany. In August 2002, preparedness of households (n = 235) and businesses (n = 103) was low: 30% of the households and 54% of the businesses took no precautionary measures before the flood event. Many undertaken emergency measures were ineffective, since only 26% of all households knew how to react when the flood warning came, and only 9% of businesses had an emergency plan in place. Due to this extreme flood, double-loop learning occurred in many households and businesses, so that many did implement precautionary measures. The distribution of adopted precautionary measures for households fits well to Preisendörfer’s low-cost hypothesis, but does not apply for businesses. Only 10% of the households (n = 112), but still 29% of the businesses (n = 41) were unprepared before the flood in 2006. Significant improvement in flood preparedness activities is still necessary. Particularly for businesses, regulatory programs and programs encouraging proactive behaviour should be implemented. The focusing event framework proofed to be a useful tool for a differentiated analysis of the responses to and learning due to a disaster also in the commercial and private sector. 相似文献

Many regulating ecosystem services exhibit non-excludability and non-rivalry characteristics akin to public goods. This makes it unlikely that such regulating ecosystem services will attract a price in the marketplace. Policymakers, therefore, find difficulties in determining a correct economic valuation for regulating ecosystem services, with potentially severe consequences for aligning policy for ecosystem service provision with public preferences for service delivery. This research used a choice modelling approach to estimate public preferences for delivery of two regulating ecosystem services; reductions in the flood risk to the British city of York (implemented by filling in drainage ditches in peat moorland further up the catchment), and a reduction in CO2 emissions (implemented by planting Poplar trees for biomass either locally in the study area or elsewhere in the UK). The choice experiment presented respondents with options providing different levels of CO2 reduction, implemented locally or nationally, and different levels of flood risk reduction, at a range of different prices, with a tax as the payment vehicle. Subsequent analysis with latent class (LC) models showed considerable heterogeneity of preference among respondents, particularly with regard to the location of tree planting for CO2 reduction. One LC segment showed a significant preference for achieving a high level CO2 reduction through national, as opposed to local tree planting, potentially indicating the existence of NIMBYism. The same LC segment displayed a preference for moderate reductions in the flood risk to York, even though this would deliver no personal benefit for a substantial proportion of the segment. The 1992 incorporation of an article by referendum in the Swiss Constitution mandating that the federal government issue regulations
on the use of genetic material that take into account the dignity of nonhuman organism raises philosophical questions about
how we should understand what is meant by “the dignity of nonhuman animals,” and about what sort of moral demands arise from
recognizing this dignity with respect to their genetic engineering. The first step in determining what is meant is to clarify
the difference between dignity when applied to humans and when applied to nonhumans. Several conceptions of human dignity
should be rejected in favor of a fourth conception: the right not to be degraded. This right implies that those who have it
have the cognitive capacities that are prerequisite for self-respect. In the case of nonhuman organisms that lack this capacity,
respecting their dignity requires the recognition that their inherent value, which is tied to their abilities to pursue their
own good, be respected. This value is not absolute, as it is in the case of humans, so it does not prohibit breeding manipulations
that make organisms more useful to humans. But it does restrict morally how sentient animals can be used. In regard to genetic
engineering, this conception requires that animals be allowed the uninhibited development of species specific functions, a
position shared by Holland and Attfield, as opposed to the Original Purpose conception proposed by Fox and the Integrity of
the Genetic Make-up position proposed by Rolston. The inherent value conception of dignity, as here defended, is what is meant
in the Swiss Constitution article.

A plan to control mercury emissions to the atmosphere and to establish mercury emission limits has recently been elaborated by the European Commission, making it necessary to devise an efficient and cost effective mercury removal technology. Towards this end wet flue gas desulfurization units appear as a promising option for multi-pollutant control. However, more investigation on mercury removal and a greater mercury removal efficiency are required to achieve this objective. In the present work scrubber chemistry and the application of various solid additives to enhance mercury removal in wet scrubbers is evaluated. The results obtained show a significant correlation between mercury removal efficiency and the pH of the scrubber slurry and SO2 concentration. A weaker correlation was observed between oxygen or slurry concentration and removal efficiency. Finally several solid oxides were found to be effective additives for enhancing mercury capture in wet scrubbers. 相似文献
