The vast majority of ectothermic organisms grow larger when developing at cooler environmental temperatures, a pattern frequently referred to as the temperature-size rule (TSR). Assuming that this reaction norm has adaptive significance, life history theory predicts that converse patterns may evolve if favored by natural selection, namely if the costs associated with complying to the TSR outweigh the benefits. Calcifying ectotherms may comprise such an exception not following the TSR, because calcification is expected to be more costly at lower temperatures thus increasing associated costs. To test this hypothesis, we reared wild-caught juveniles of the intertidal gastropod Monetaria annulus and compared their shell sizes at the end of the juvenile stage between two rearing temperatures. Contrary to our prediction, M. annulus does follow the TSR, suggesting that increased calcification costs at lower temperatures are not high enough to break the TSR. Such plastic responses should be considered when interpreting geographical patterns such as latitudinal size clines, which may be caused at least partly by phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Visual and olfactory cues are the first interface between flowers and their visitors and are adaptations to facilitate successful pollination. Initial responses to and associative learning of multimodal cues by flower visitors are based on the perception of colours and volatiles. In this study, we tested how visual, olfactory and multimodal stimuli affect the behaviour of bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) and correlated the properties of 28 stimuli in relation to the insects’ sensory equipment to these behaviours. Initial responses and associative learning were recorded using a radio frequency identification system, tracking the visitation sequences of individual bumblebees to artificial flowers treated with naturally occurring pigments and/or volatiles. The salience of the stimuli was evaluated as the colour contrast to the background and as electroantennogram responses. The main finding was that both initial responses and learning performance were positively correlated to the salience of the stimuli, suggesting that salience is a key feature of flower cues in the interactions with insects. The salience of compound stimuli consisting of two or more pigments and/or volatiles was largely additively determined by the saliences of individual compounds. Potentially, the valence of the stimuli may interfere with the positive relationship between salience and behaviour, which is indicated by our results, too. The salience of multimodal cues depends on the species-specific equipment of visual and olfactory receptors and thus enables flowers to be advertising for some but rather inconspicuous for other flower visitors.  相似文献

Diana monkeys produce acoustically distinct calls to a number of external events, including different types of predators. In a previous study, we found population-wide differences in male alarm call production in Taï Forest, Ivory Coast, and on Tiwai Island, Sierra Leone, mostly likely originating from differences in predator experience. In Taï Forest, leopards (Panthera pardus) are common but on Tiwai Island they have been absent for decades, while the predation pressure from crowned eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) has been similar. To further evaluate the impact of predator experience, we here analyse the vocal behaviour of female Diana monkeys in both habitats. Female Diana monkeys produce predator-specific alarm calls, alert calls and contact calls in response to predators, suggesting that their calls serve in a broader range of functions compared to males. Results showed that females produced the same call types at both sites, despite the differences in predator fauna. Regarding call usage, leopard alarm calls were extremely rare on Tiwai Island, but not in Taï Forest, whereas we found no differences in eagle alarm call production. When comparing response latencies, Tiwai females were slower to respond to both predators compared to Taï females. Finally, we found no habitat-specific acoustic differences in the alert and predator-specific alarm calls, but significant differences in frequency-based parameters of contact calls. Overall, our results suggest that ontogenetic experience can affect primate vocal behaviour in both usage and acoustic structure but that the way in which particular call types are affected may be closely linked to function.  相似文献

Condensed tannins can be found in various parts of many plants. Unlike lignin there has been little study of their fate as they enter the soil organic matter pool and their influence on nutrient cycling, especially through their protein-binding properties. We extracted and characterized tannin-rich fractions from humus collected in 1998 from a black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton et al.] forest in Canada where a previous study (1995) showed high levels (3.8% by weight) of condensed tannins. A reference tannin purified from black spruce needles was characterized by solution 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a pure procyanidin with mainly cis stereochemistry and an average chain length of four to five units. The colorimetric proanthocyanidin (PA) assay, standardized against the black spruce tannin, showed that both extracted humus fractions had higher tannin contents than the original humus (2.84% and 11.17% vs. 0.08%), and accounted for 32% of humus tannin content. Consistent with the results from the chemical assay, the aqueous fraction showed higher tannin signals in the 13C cross-polarization and magic-angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR spectrum than the emulsified one. As both tannin-rich humus fractions were depleted in N and high in structures derived from lignin and cutin, they did not have properties consistent with recaldtrant tannin-protein complexes proposed as a mechanism for N sequestration in humus. Further studies are needed to establish if tannin-protein structures in humus can be detected or isolated, or if tannins contribute to forest management problems observed in these ecosystems by binding to and slowing down the activity of soil enzymes.  相似文献
