Enantioselective separation and determination of single nonylphenol isomers

It has recently become clear that an isomer specific view of technical 4-nonylphenol (NP) is absolutely necessary for the evaluation of the biological behavior of NP, raising additional questions concerning enantiomer specific effects. For the first time, in this study enantioselective HPLC was applied to enantiomeric separation of chiral NP isomers. A semipreparative separation of two NP isomers could be achieved. A GC-MS method has been developed for the simultaneous detection of three chiral NP isomers in water samples. Investigation of influent and effluent samples from a wastewater treatment plant in Germany indicated that enantioselective degradation could occur in the environment. In one examined influent, an enantiomer ratio of 1.7 for two different isomers was determined.     

Arsenic sequestration by nitrate respiring microbial communities in urban lake sediments

Changes in microbial community composition and activity were related to geochemical conditions favoring arsenic sequestration in sediments collected from the urban, arsenic-contaminated Upper Mystic Lake. After amendment with nitrate, >94% total soluble arsenic is sequestered by Fe(III)-(oxy)hydroxides generated in live sediments. Of this sequestered arsenic, >75% existed as As(III), indicating As redox state alone is not responsible for changes in mobility. Arsenic sequestration was concurrent with the microbial respiration of nitrate as indicated by steady state hydrogen concentration and the presence of organisms similar to nitrate-reducing, iron-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the genus Dechloromonas in 16S rDNA clone libraries.

Objective exposure to road traffic noise,noise annoyance and self-rated poor health – framing the relationship between noise and health as a matter of multiple stressors and resources in urban neighbourhoods

Borrowing from concepts of socio-environmental epidemiology and psychology, we conceived self-rated health as a function of multiple physical and psychosocial stressors and resources at the residential neighbourhood and individual level. In this model of multiple stressors, objective exposure to road traffic noise was specified as a physical stressor whose effect on health may be mediated and modified by residents’ subjective response to noise (serious noise annoyance). Self-reported hearing disability, recreational coping in green areas and residential neighbourhood satisfaction were examined as additional psychosocial stressors or resources, independently of socio-demographic and -economic factors. Results from our empirical analysis based on two studies and multivariable logistic regressions might support the idea that environmental planning should overcome sectoral boundaries and adopt an integrative approach including objective exposures, residents’ subjective responses, and perceived resources.
