The invasive red alga Gracilaria vermiculophylla has quickly spread across Europe, but it is unclear whether its success is based on a high tolerance to variations in environmental conditions or to the absence of native grazers that feed on this alga. We tested whether native invertebrate grazers prefer native algae to G. vermiculophylla. Feeding preferences of three common herbivores were quantified when offered G. vermiculophylla and native Fucus vesiculosus, Ceramium virgatum, and Ulva intestinalis in no-, two- and multiple-choice trials. Herbivore growth was measured when fed each of the algae separately. Grazers consumed G. vermiculophylla in no-choice trials, but avoided generally this alga when having a choice. U. intestinalis was always preferred over G. vermiculophylla, and grazers fed with U. intestinalis grew faster than those fed with G. vermiculophylla. We conclude that grazers avoid G. vermiculophylla to most native algae, which may benefit G. vermiculophylla in northern European estuaries. 相似文献

Spherical TiO2 nanoparticles (npTiO2) were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of tetraethoxy orthotitanate under a nitrogen atmosphere. ZnO nanoparticles (npZnO) were prepared using hydrothermal methods. The crystal structure, chemical, thermal and morphological properties of npZnO and npTiO2 were characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, enery-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope techniques. The short- and long-term experiments were started with neonates taken from the same culture and laboratory condition. In the acute experiments, npTiO2, npZnO, and cocktail concentrations were applied. 96h-LC50 values were 1.8, 0.7, and 0.1?mg?L?1, respectively (p?<?.05). For the chronic experiments, different npTiO2 concentrations were performed. 21d-LC50 value was 1.0?mgL?1 (p?<?.05). Morphometry became progressively worse in concentrations of more than 1?mgL?1 npTiO2. Neonate and young individuals were more sensitive to death because of their low tolerance. This result was affected by population progeny and growth rates (p?<?.05). While control and 0.5?mgL?1 npTiO2 groups were determined as growing population, 1.5 and 2?mgL?1 npTiO2 groups had decreased population size as R0 values. Consequently, the relationships between nanoparticle accumulation within Daphnia magna and its population structure and body morphometry for each concentration were important indicators. The littoral zone of temperate rocky shores is normally dominated by perennial macroalgae (e.g. Fucus, Ascophyllum, Laminaria), but nutrient enrichment and/or permanently decreased wave action may lead to structural community changes from dominance
of perennials to increased amounts of annual opportunistic species (mainly green algae). Macroalgal biomass, diversity and
production as well as relationships between the two latter were studied using Solbergstrand’s rocky shore mesocosms in SE
Norway in connection with a long-term experimental manipulation of nutrient addition and wave action (high and low levels
of both factors applied in a crossed way to eight outdoor basins). After more than 2 years of experimental treatment, the
total standing stock of macroalgae was larger in low nutrient than in high nutrient treatments as well as in high wave compared
to low wave treatments (in autumn only). For macroalgal functional groups, bushy and filamentous brown and filamentous red
algae were generally favoured by low nutrient concentrations, while annual filamentous and sheet-like green algae were stimulated
by the nutrient enrichment. There was only one significant interaction between nutrient enrichment and wave action (for brown
filamentous algae in autumn) and also only one significant main effect of the wave treatment (for bushy brown algae in autumn).
Surprisingly, the high nutrient treatments supported a higher diversity of macroalgae, whereas the low nutrient treatments
generally showed higher production rates. Moreover, significantly negative correlations were found between macroalgal diversity
and primary productivity in both summer and autumn. This study shows that it is the biological components of the communities
subjected to external forcing (nutrient addition or decreased wave action) that regulate production and this contradicts the
common misperception that resource production in natural systems simply can be fast-forwarded by fertilization. The negative
relationships between diversity and productivity, although a consequence of unexpected results for diversity and production,
are also novel and hint towards species identities having more important functional consequences than general species dominance
patterns and the amount of species per se. These results also emphasise the context dependency of findings within the field

This paper explores the development towards sustainability management systems (SMSs) in three Swedish local authorities. Many local authorities have extensive experience in using standardised Environmental Management Systems (EMSs). Recently EMSs have extended their reach by widening the scope of the systems including other dimensions of sustainable development. Case studies have been performed in three of the most EMS-experienced local authorities in Sweden. These authorities have extended their EMSs into a sustainability management approach in different ways. This paper discusses the development, possible contributions, and constraints with this development. Expanding EMSs into SMSs can be seen as a learning process in which a larger systems perspective leads to increased awareness that the management system becomes limited by only managing environmental issues. Expanding the EMSs into SMSs may lead to a more complete view of the organisation's total impact on nature and society, and issues that need to be managed. 相似文献

Laboratory and lysimeter studies of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid in a sand and a clay soil 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Due to the increasing concern about the appearance of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and its major metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in natural waters, batch laboratory and lysimeter transport studies were performed to assess the potential for leaching of the compounds in two agricultural soils. Unlabeled and 14C-labeled glyphosate were added at a rate corresponding to 1.54 kg a.i. ha(-1) on undisturbed sand and clay columns. Leachate was sampled weekly during a period of 748 d for analyses of glyphosate, AMPA, total 14C, and particle-bound residues. Topsoil and subsoil samples were used for determination of glyphosate adsorption, glyphosate degradation, and formation of AMPA and its degradation. The influence of adsorption on glyphosate degradation was confirmed, giving very slow degradation rate in the clay soil (half-life 110-151 d). The kinetics of AMPA residues suggest that although AMPA is always more persistent than glyphosate when formed from glyphosate, its degradation rate can be faster than that of glyphosate. The kinetics also suggest that apart from glyphosate being transformed to AMPA, the sarcosine pathway can be just as significant. The long persistence of glyphosate was also confirmed in the lysimeter study, where glyphosate+AMPA residues constituted 59% of the initial amount of glyphosate added to the clay soil 748 d after application. Despite large amounts of precipitation in the autumn and winter after application, however, these residues were mainly located in the topsoil, and only 0.009 and 0.019% of the initial amount of glyphosate added leached during the whole study period in the sand and clay, respectively. Habitat corridors, a common management strategy for increasing connectivity in fragmented landscapes, have experimentally validated positive influences on species movement and diversity. However, long-standing concerns that corridors could negatively impact native species by spreading antagonists, such as disease, remain largely untested. Using a large-scale, replicated experiment, we evaluated whether corridors increase the incidence of plant parasites. We found that corridor impacts varied with parasite dispersal mode. Connectivity provided by corridors increased incidence of biotically dispersed parasites (galls on Solidago odora) but not of abiotically dispersed parasites (foliar fungi on S. odora and three Lespedeza spp.). Both biotically and abiotically dispersed parasites responded to edge effects, but the direction of responses varied across species. Although our results require additional tests for generality to other species and landscapes, they suggest that, when establishing conservation corridors, managers should focus on mitigating two potential negative effects: the indirect effects of narrow corridors in creating edges and direct effects of corridors in enhancing connectivity of biotically dispersed parasites. 相似文献

The pore water transport of antimony and titanium, applied as nanoparticles (NPs), was studied by spiking stable suspensions of two different nanomaterials on the surface of an undisturbed floodplain soil. For preparation of stable dispersions, two different strategies were followed. (i) Comparable to those used in industrial applications: titanium dioxide nanoparticles, with an average diameter of 99 nm, were prepared by high-energy ball milling in water, whereas for (ii) antimony trioxide (Sb(2)O(3); average diameter 121 nm) a dispersing agent (sodium salt of poly[(naphthaleneformaldehyde)sulfonate] (pNFS) in water) was used. The upper 17 cm of a floodplain soil (river Rhine, Germany) was sampled using the minimally invasive sediment or fauna incubation experiment (SOFIE? two compartment cell; 3 l volume each), which preserved the pore system of the soil. The cells were equipped with 450 and 100 nm filter probes at different depths providing a non-invasive sampling of the pore water. The pore water was sampled at different times (T = 0, 24, 48, 96 and 196 h) and analysed by inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS). Sb and Ti were transported via the pore water of the floodplain soil to a depth of 14 cm, corresponding to the maximum cell depth. The highest Sb concentration in the pore water was detected after 24 h at a depth of 5.5-8 cm. Although the spiked concentration was higher for Ti than for Sb, the total Ti concentration in the pore water of the spiked cell was lower. This indicates a stronger agglomeration of TiO(2) NPs or a more intensive interaction of Ti with the solid matrix and a faster transport of Sb towards deeper soil layers. The results show that metal(loid)s from metal oxide NPs are transported in the soil pore water and, hence, have the potential to act as the source of contamination of deeper soil layers after soil surface contamination. 相似文献

Objective
To investigate if the Down syndrome phenotype differs according to the result of first-trimester combined screening (FTS).Method
We included all Down syndrome cases diagnosed by karyotype in pregnancy or after birth in Denmark during 2005–2018. We compared screen positive (odds ≥1:300) and screen negative (odds <1:300) cases as well as screen result subgroups with respect to anthropometrics, congenital malformations, childhood diseases, and hospitalization.Results
Absolute measures of fetal and birth anthropometrics were comparable between groups. A prenatal malformation diagnosis was more prevalent among screen positive than screen negative cases. Analyses suggested that this could reflect a detection bias. Cases with a screen result of 1:2–1:10 had a higher probability of being diagnosed with a malformation prenatally and with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) postnatally compared with a result of 1:11–1:300. Screen positive cases more often had non-severe CHD but less often a non-heart malformation compared with screen negative cases, while proportions of severe CHD were similar in these groups. Data on hospitalizations showed inconsistent results.Conclusion
The 1:300 screening threshold had limited or no value in predicting Down syndrome phenotype severity. In contrast, cases with a screen result between 1:2 and 1:10 may represent a more severe phenotype. 相似文献129.
Permeable biobarrier systems (PBSs) are being recognized as low‐cost passive bioremediation technologies for chlorinated organic contamination. This innovative technology can play a crucial and effective role in site restorations. Laboratory‐scale experiments were conducted to investigate the biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) to ethylene in shallow groundwater through the use of a PBS enhanced by bioaugmentation at the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS). Two composts and two plant amendments, eucalyptus mulch (EM) and corncobs (CC), were examined for their effectiveness at creating and maintaining conditions suitable for TCE anaerobic dechlorination. These materials were evaluated for their (1) nutrient and organic carbon content, (2) TCE sorption characteristics, and (3) longevity of release of nutrients and soluble carbon in groundwater to support TCE dechlorination. Native bacteria in the columns had the ability to convert TCE to dichloroethenes (DCEs); however, the inoculation with the TCE‐degrading culture greatly increased the rate of biodegradation. This caused a significant increase in by‐product concentration, mostly in the form of DCEs and vinyl chloride (VC) followed by a slow degradation to ethylene. Of the tested amendments, eucalyptus mulch was the most effective at supporting the reductive dechlorination of TCE. Source separation, composting and anaerobic digestion, with associated land application, are increasingly being considered
as alternative waste management strategies to landfilling and incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW). Environmental life
cycle assessments are a useful tool in political decision-making about waste management strategies. However, due to the diversity
of processed organic MSW and the situations in which it can be applied, the environmental impacts of land application are
very hard to determine by experimental means. In the current study, we used the agroecosystem model Daisy to simulate a range
of different scenarios representing different geographical areas, farm and soil types under Danish conditions and legislation.
Generally, the application of processed organic MSW resulted in increased emissions compared with the corresponding standard
scenarios, but with large differences between scenarios. Emission coefficients for nitrogen leaching to the groundwater ranged
from 0.03 to 0.87, while those for nitrogen lost to surface waters through tile drains ranged from 0 to 0.30. Emission coefficients
for N2O formation ranged from 0.013 to 0.022 and for ammonia volatilization from 0.016 to 0.11. These estimates are within reasonable
range of observed values under similar conditions. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis showed that the estimates were not
very sensitive to the mineralization dynamics of the processed organic MSW. The results show that agroecosystem models can
be powerful tools to estimate the environmental impacts of land application of processed MSW under different conditions. Despite
this, agroecosystem models have only been used to a very limited degree for this purpose. 相似文献
