Growth and metabolism of the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus were studied in the laboratory at 2°, 5° and 8°C. Dry-weight determinations of growth demonstrated significant direct regressions of growth on temperature. Mean, daily specific growth rates were 10.1%/day at 80°C, 5.8%/day at 50°C, and 2.6%/day at 2°C. Time to metamorphosis was 49 days at 8°C and 80 days at 5°C. Larvae did not survive to metamorphosis at 2°C. Absolute values of routine metabolism expressed in μl of oxygen consumed regressed on body weight were best described by a third-degree polynomial. Larval routine metabolism increased from hatching to metamorphosis, at which time it declined before again increasing. Temperature directly affected routine metabolism. Metabolism on a unit-weight basis decreased with increasing size and was also directly influenced by temperature.  相似文献

V, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Ba, Pb, Bi and U have been analysed by inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry in various sections of a dated snow/ice core drilled at an altitude of 6542 m on the Sajama ice cap in Bolivia. The analysed sections were dated from the Last Glacial Stage ( approximately 22,000 years ago), the Mid-Holocene and the last centuries. The observed variations of crustal enrichment factors (EFc) for the various metals show contrasting situations. For V, Co, Rb, Sr and U, EFc values close to unity are observed for all sections, then showing that these elements are mainly derived from rock and soil dust. For the other metals, clear time trends are observed, with a pronounced increase of EFc values during the 19th and 20th centuries. This increase shows evidence of metal pollution associated with human activity in South America. For Pb an important contribution was from gasoline additives. For metals such as Cu, Zn, Ag and Cd an important contribution was from metal production activities, with a continuous increase of production during the 20th century in countries such as Peru, Chile and Bolivia.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to optimize experimental conditions of sorbent preparation from sewage sludge using experimental design methodology. Series of carbonaceous sorbents have been prepared by chemical activation with sulfuric acid. The sorbents produced were characterized, and their properties (surface chemistry, porous and adsorptive properties) were analyzed as a function of the experimental conditions (impregnation ratio, activation temperature and time). Carbonaceous sorbents developed from sludge allow copper ion, phenol and dyes (Acid Red 18 and Basic Violet 4) to be removed from aqueous solution as well as VOC from gas phase. Indeed, according to experimental conditions, copper adsorption capacity varies from 77 to 83 mg g(-1), phenol adsorption capacity varies between 41 and 53 mg g(-1) and VOC adsorption capacities (acetone and toluene) range from 12 to 54 mg g(-1). Each response has been described by a second-order model that was found to be appropriate to predict most of the responses in every experimental region. The most influential factors on each experimental design response have been identified. Regions in which optimum values of each factor were achieved for preparation of activated carbons suitable for use in wastewater and gas treatments have been determined using response surfaces methodology. In order to have a high mass yield and to minimize the energetic cost of the process, the following optimal conditions, 1.5 g of H2SO4 g(-1) of sludge, 700 degrees C and 145 min are more appropriate for use of activated carbon from sludge in water and gas treatments.  相似文献

Summary Eleven behavioural characteristics of eight species of the subgenus Evylaeus were analysed using principal components analysis. The first component axis represents social level and explains over forty percent of the total variation in the data. The following characteristics are highly correlated with social level — (i) a reduction in the proportion of males in the first brood, (ii) a reduction in the proportion of workers that mate, (iii) a reduction in the proportion of workers that have developed ovaries, (iv) an increase in the mean number of workers, (v) increased contact between adults and developing brood and (vi) an increase in the size difference between queens and workers. Because these factors appear, in general, to be under the control of the queen it is argued that parental manipulation has been an important component of social evolution in these bees. The number of worker broods and the mechanism of male production are also related to social level but are less important. Nest architecture, nest defense and polygyny seem to be unrelated to social level. Variation in nest architecture may be in response to edaphic features of the substrate. The lack of any relationship between polygyny and social level implies that the semisocial route to eusociality was not the one taken. It is likely that polygyny can only occur where the substrate is suitable for the winter hibernation of sisters in their natal nest. Multivariate methods are useful in determining the relative social level of closely related halictine species.  相似文献

The aims of this study was to investigate the persistence and the growth of culturable bacterial indicators (CBI) including total coliforms (TC) and faecal coliforms represented by Escherichia coli, enterococcus (ENT), and aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMB) in the surface sediments and the water column of Vidy Bay (Lake Geneva, City of Lausanne, Switzerland). The study was carried out for 60 d using microcosms containing Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) e uent and nonsterile water without CBI, as well as contaminated and non-contaminated sediments. The e ects of water temperature and of organic matter associated with sediments on the survival of CBI in the sediments and the water column were observed. The number of CBI colonies in the contaminated sediments of Vidy Bay and in the STP e uent was almost identical in the order of 105–107, 104–106, 103–105, and 104–107 CFU/100 g sediment or /100 mL water for TC, E. coli, ENT, and AMB respectively. A degradation of CBI was observed in the sediments where organic mater content was low and in the water column at a temperature of 10°C after 5 d of experimentation. In addition, a growth of CBI was observed in the sediment which is rich in organic matter at 20°C. The results of this study indicate: (1) the higher concentrations of the CBI observed in di erent points in the water column of Vidy Bay may not be explained only by the recent contribution of the three potential sources of the Bay contamination including STP and the Chamberonne and Flon Rivers, but also by the persistence, removal from sediment and multiplication of CBI in the sediment and water column; (2) the sediment of Vidy Bay constitute a reservoir of CBI and can even support their growth; and (3) the CBI not only survive in sediments, but also can be remobilized and increased in the water column, therefore, it become a permanent microbiological pollution in Vidy Bay.  相似文献

Paysandisia archon was accidentally introduced into Europe where it damages endemic and ornamental palms, also threatening the date palm from North Africa. Little was known about sex pheromones in the Castniidae day-flying moth before a recent paper that concluded on the absence of female sex pheromone in P. archon. A putative identification of a short-range male pheromone, present on fore- and hindwings, was reported. In this paper, we describe the original structure of the male androconia located on the tarsi of the mid-legs. The extracts of mid-legs were analysed by GC/MS and the chemical structure of the male androconia component was identified as E2,Z13-18:OH. After extraction in solvent, biological activity of the extracts was assessed by EAG. The chemistry and the morphology of the androconia reinforce the current classification of the Castniidae in the Cossoid/Sesioid assemblage and provide new information on the chemical ecology in day-flying Lepidoptera and suit the recent paper describing the courtship behaviour  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Profiles of the sources of nonmethane organic compounds (NMOCs) were developed for emissions from vehicles, petroleum fuels (gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas [LPG], and natural gas), a petroleum refinery, a smelter, and a cast iron factory in Cairo, Egypt. More than 100 hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons were tentatively identified and quantified. Gasoline-vapor and whole-gasoline profiles could be distinguished from the other profiles by high concentrations of the C5 and C6 saturated hydrocarbons. The vehicle emission profile was similar to the whole-gasoline profile, with the exception of the unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, which were present at higher concentrations in the vehicle emission profile. High levels of the C2-C4 saturated hydrocarbons, particularly n-butane, were characteristic features of the petroleum refinery emissions. The smelter and cast iron factory emissions were similar to the refinery emissions; however, the levels of benzene and toluene were greater in the former two sources. The LPG and natural gas emissions contained high concentrations of n-butane and ethane, respectively. The NMOC source profiles for Cairo were distinctly different from profiles for U.S. sources, indicating that NMOC source profiles are sensitive to the particular composition of petroleum fuels that are used in a location.  相似文献

Polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCISs) for the monitoring of polar pesticides in groundwater were tested on two sites in order to evaluate their applicability by comparison with the spot-sampling approach. This preliminary study shows that, as in surface water, POCIS is a useful tool, especially for the screening of substances at low concentration levels that are not detected by laboratory analysis of spot samples. For quantitative results, a rough estimation is obtained. The challenge is now to define the required water-flow conditions for a relevant quantification of pesticides in groundwater and to establish more representative sampling rates for groundwater.  相似文献
