Fusion imaging (FI), the simultaneous display of the same anatomical region using two imaging modalities, has been used in other areas of medicine for both diagnosis and guiding interventions. Examples include positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging in oncology and ultrasound-magnetic resonance imaging (US-MRI) fusion in biopsies of the prostate gland. The underlying principle is to take advantage of the complementary information in each modality to improve accuracy, be it diagnostic accuracy or targeting accuracy in biopsies. For example, PET-CT overlays the metabolic activity of lesions on the superb spatial and anatomical detail of CT. While the historical mainstay of fetal imaging has been ultrasound, advances in ultrafast MR imaging together with advances in fetal MRI over the past two decades, have resulted in the opportunity to explore fusion imaging in fetal medicine. We present an overview of the principles of US-MRI fusion imaging in prenatal medicine, report our local experience, and review the literature in this emerging area. We share our perspective on how FI can improve diagnostic confidence, be used as an educational tool, and potentially enhance guidance in certain fetal procedures. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Today most rivers are not freely flowing but are highly regulated to meet both human and wildlife needs. Several models allow the determination of instream flows that are needed to meet wildlife demands. However, these models are based on assumptions that limit their applicability to certain types of rivers. While these limitations do not preclude the use of the models on other types of rivers, like the Platte River in Nebraska, their limitations should be considered and accommodated by those making instream flow planning and management decisions. Other factors affecting channel morphology and its associated wildlife habitat, such as threshold values and vegetation are not adequately considered by current concepts. If rivers are to be managed to provide wildlife habitat, these factors will have to be addressed. 相似文献

Provisioning of nutrients to the young during parental care is one of the mechanisms by which parents can affect growth and
survival of their young and thus their reproductive success. We examined the hypothesis that food quality, i.e., ratio of
macronutrients, provided to the young via maternal care affects their performance and the female’s reproductive success. The
subsocial spider Stegodyphus lineatus exhibits intensive maternal care behaviors, including feeding the young and matriphagy (consumption of the mother). Our results
showed that a protein-enriched diet resulted in larger females at maturation and higher survival of young, relative to intermediate
or lipid-enriched diets. However, fecundity was not affected by female diet. We suggest that most of the nutrients are provided
to the young during maternal care rather than deposited in the eggs, allowing females to economize on limited nutritional
reserves. Females before maternal care showed a low protein and high lipid content relative to females before maturation and
oviposition, suggesting a change in the nutritional requirement of females before maternal care. This change in macronutrient
composition may be adaptive for the success of the young in the wild and shows a novel approach to animals’ ability to increase
their reproductive success. Field-collected females showed a similar macronutrient composition as that of protein-enriched
females in the lab, suggesting a high reproductive success of females in the wild. To our knowledge, this is the first time
the importance of different macronutrients to females’ reproductive success is examined during reproduction. 相似文献

Evolutionary and ecological transitions from carnivorous to omnivorous feeding may be constrained by the ability of the animal
to cope with disparate types of foods, even if preadaptations for such behaviour exist. The omnivorous true bug, Dicyphus hesperus (Hemiptera: Miridae) requires both animals (small, soft-bodied insects) and plants in its diet and obtains the majority of
its dietary and metabolic water from plant feeding. Serrations on the lateral margins of the mandibular stylets wear with
age, and this wear is exacerbated when the insects feed on plants compared to those provided free water and no plants. D. hesperus that feed on plants attack fewer prey but consumed similar amounts of prey tissue compared to individuals that were provided
free water. Although others have shown mandible wear for plant-chewing animals we show for the first time that plant feeding
can impose similar wear on plant-piercing animals as well. 相似文献
