Non-random distribution patterns of specialized phytophagous insects on their hosts may depend on intraspecific differences in plant tissue quality, including nutrients and secondary compounds. Secondary compounds are involved in plant resistance, but are also important for the recognition and acceptability of plants as resources by specialized insects. If individuals within a plant species vary in their content of such secondary substances, there may also be qualitative differences between them. In such cases, natural selection will favor insects with the ability to distinguish and prefer the more suitable plants. In Sweden, the leaf beetle Gonioctena linnaeana Schrank (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) is highly specialized on one host, the native willow Salix triandra L (Salicaceae). Field observations reveal that some host plants in a population harbor many feeding larvae, causing severe defoliation, whereas neighboring plants may have few or no feeding larvae. Our hypothesis is that the distribution pattern of G. linnaeana larvae in this population results from qualitative differences between individual host plants in combination with the ability of G. linnaeana females to distinguish between plants that are suitable and not suitable for offspring performance. We examine whether larval survival differs depending on diet and whether the content of secondary chemical compounds explains female preference. Based on the higher survival rate of larvae reared on leaves from preferred hosts, we conclude that G. linnaeana females have evolved a behavior that maximizes offspring performance and thus positively affects female fitness. A chemical survey of the plants indicates that luteolin-7-glucoside and an unidentified flavonoid are important for separating the preferred from the non-preferred plants.  相似文献

In the Baltic Sea, the broadly distributed brown alga Fucus vesiculosus coexists in sympatry over part of its range (south west Gulf of Bothnia) with the Baltic endemic F. radicans sp. nov, while further north in colder and lower-salinity areas of the Baltic F. radicans occurs alone (north west Gulf of Bothnia). F. radicans appears to have arisen via rapid speciation from F. vesiculosus within the recent history of the Baltic (ca. 7500 BP). Possible functional divergence between the two species was investigated by comparing stress-responsive gene expression in a common-garden experiment. The experiment used two allopatric populations of Fucus vesiculosus from the Skagerrak (North Sea) and Central Baltic, as well as F. radicans from the same Central Baltic site. The two species in sympatry displayed divergent heat shock responses, while F. vesiculosus populations from allopatric sites did not. F. radicans was more sensitive to heat shock at 25°C, either alone or together with high irradiance and desiccation, than Baltic or Skagerrak F. vesiculosus. The results indicate that rapid functional divergence in the inducible heat shock response has occurred between sympatric species on a timescale of thousands of years.  相似文献

The costs and benefits of bird song are likely to vary among species, and different singing patterns may reflect differences in reproductive strategies. We compared temporal patterns of singing activity in two songbird species, the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) and the great tit (Parus major). The two species live side by side year round, and they have similar breeding ecology and similar rates of extra-pair paternity. However, they differ in two aspects of reproductive strategy that may have an influence on song output: blue tits are facultatively polygynous and have a fairly short breeding season with almost no second broods, whereas great tits are socially monogamous but more commonly raise second broods. We found that great tit males continued singing at high levels during the egg-laying and incubation periods, while monogamously paired blue tit males strongly reduced singing activity after the first days of egg-laying by their female. Since males of both species sang much more intensely shortly before sunrise than after sunrise, at midday or in the evening, this difference was most conspicuous at dawn. No differences in singing activity were found within species when testing for male age. We suggest that in contrast to blue tits, great tit males continued singing after egg-laying to defend the territory and to encourage the female for a possible second brood.  相似文献

The unique property of arsenic hyperaccumulation by the newly discovered Chinese brake (Pteris vittata L.) fern is of great significance in the phytoremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils. The objectives of this study were to (i) examine arsenic accumulation characterized by its distribution pattern in Chinese brake, and (ii) assess the phytoextraction potential of the plant. Young ferns with five or six fronds were transferred to an arsenic-contaminated soil containing 98 mg As kg-1 and grown for 20 wk in a greenhouse. At harvest, the Chinese brake produced a total dry biomass of 18 g plant-1. Arsenic concentration in the fronds was 6000 mg kg-1 dry mass after 8 wk of transplanting, and it increased to 7230 mg kg-1 after 20 wk with a bioconcentration factor (ratio of plant arsenic concentration to water-soluble arsenic in soil) of 1450 and a translocation factor (ratio of arsenic concentration in shoot to that in root) of 24. The arsenic concentrations increased as the fronds aged, with the old fronds accumulating as much as 13,800 mg As kg-1. Most (approximately 90%) of the arsenic taken up by the Chinese brake was transported to the fronds, with the lowest arsenic concentrations in roots. About 26% of the initial soil arsenic was removed by the plant after 20 wk of transplanting. Our data suggest that the arsenic hyperaccumulating property of the Chinese brake could be exploited on a large scale to remediate arsenic contaminated soils.  相似文献

Low molecular weight thiol-containing compounds have been reported to play an important role in metal detoxification and accumulation in some higher plants. The formation of these low molecular weight thiols in the recently discovered arsenic hyperaccumulator, Chinese Brake fern (Pteris vittata) upon exposure to arsenic and other trace metals was investigated. In addition to cysteine and glutathione, an unidentified thiol was observed in the plants exposed to arsenic, which was not found in the control. The concentration of the unidentified thiol showed a very strong and positive correlation with arsenic concentration in the leaflets. The unidentified thiol was low in rachises and undetectable in the roots for As-treated plants. Total and acid-soluble thiols were also measured and the results indicated that arsenic mainly stimulated the synthesis of acid-soluble thiol in Chinese Brake. The investigations of other trace elements (Cd, Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, Hg, and Se) showed that these elements were not accumulated in Chinese Brake to high levels and the synthesis of the unidentified thiol in the plant was not observed. Our study suggests that the unidentified thiol was induced specifically by arsenic and the distribution patterns of the unidentified thiol and arsenic in the plant were consistent, indicating that the synthesis of this compound was related to As exposure.  相似文献

Arctic and subarctic ecosystems are experiencing substantial changes in hydrology, vegetation, permafrost conditions, and carbon cycling, in response to climatic change and other anthropogenic drivers, and these changes are likely to continue over this century. The total magnitude of these changes results from multiple interactions among these drivers. Field measurements can address the overall responses to different changing drivers, but are less capable of quantifying the interactions among them. Currently, a comprehensive assessment of the drivers of ecosystem changes, and the magnitude of their direct and indirect impacts on subarctic ecosystems, is missing. The Torneträsk area, in the Swedish subarctic, has an unrivalled history of environmental observation over 100 years, and is one of the most studied sites in the Arctic. In this study, we summarize and rank the drivers of ecosystem change in the Torneträsk area, and propose research priorities identified, by expert assessment, to improve predictions of ecosystem changes. The research priorities identified include understanding impacts on ecosystems brought on by altered frequency and intensity of winter warming events, evapotranspiration rates, rainfall, duration of snow cover and lake-ice, changed soil moisture, and droughts. This case study can help us understand the ongoing ecosystem changes occurring in the Torneträsk area, and contribute to improve predictions of future ecosystem changes at a larger scale. This study examined the roles of arsenic translocation and reduction, and P distribution in arsenic detoxification of Pteris vittata L. (Chinese Brake fern), an arsenic hyperaccumulator and Pteris ensiformis L. (Slender Brake fern), a non-arsenic hyperaccumulator. After growing in 20% Hoagland solution containing 0, 133 or 267 microM of sodium arsenate for 1, 5 or 10 d, the plants were separated into fronds, rhizomes, and roots. They were analyzed for biomass, and concentrations of arsenate (AsV), arsenite (AsIII) and phosphorus. Arsenic in the fronds of P. vittata was up to 20 times greater than that of P. ensiformis, yet showing no toxicity symptoms as did in P. ensiformis. While arsenic was concentrated primarily in the fronds of P. vittata as arsenite it was mainly concentrated in the roots of P. ensiformis as arsenate. Arsenic reduction in the plants took longer than 1-d. P. vittata maintained greater P in the roots while P. ensiformis in the fronds. The high arsenic tolerance of the hyperaccumulator P. vittata may be attributed to its ability to effectively reduce arsenate to arsenite in the fronds, translocate arsenic from the roots to fronds, and maintain a greater ratio of P/As in the roots.  相似文献

Field demonstration of in situ immobilization of soil Pb using P amendments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A long-term field-scale demonstration project on the feasibility of using P to immobilize Pb in a Pb-contaminated urban soil was conducted. Phosphate was applied at an average rate of 3040 mg P/kg soil based on a P/Pb molar ration of 4.0, with four treatments: T0, no P application; T1, H3PO4 only; T2, 1/2 H3PO4+1/2 CaH2PO4; and T3, 1/2 H3PO4+1/2 phosphate rock. Soil samples were collected and analyzed 220 days after the P applications. For all P treatments, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) extractable Pb levels in surface soils (0-10 cm) were reduced to below 5.0 mg Pb/l, with T2 also effective in reducing the TCLP Pb level in subsurface soils (10-30 cm, <4.63 mg/l). Sequential extraction analysis indicates that P was effective in transforming soil Pb from non-residual fractions to a residual fraction. Such a transformation was mainly through dissolution of Pb associated with carbonate fraction and precipitation of pyromorphite-like minerals, which were confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Among these three treatments, T3 was the most effective in reducing Pb mobility and minimizing P and Pb leaching in the soil. Our research clearly demonstrates that P amendments were effective in immobilizing Pb in contaminated soil.  相似文献

To assess the efficiency of P-induced metal immobilization in soils, a pilot-scale field experiment was conducted at a metal contaminated site located in central Florida. Phosphate was applied at a P/Pb molar ratio of 4.0 with three treatments: 100% of P from H3PO4, 50% of P from H3PO4+ 50% of P from Ca(H2PO4)2, and 50% of P from H3PO4+5% phosphate rock in the soil. Approximately 1 year after P application, soil and plant samples were collected to determine mobility and bioavailability of selected metals (Pb, Zn, and Cu) using sequential extraction procedure and mineralogical characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis. Phosphorus distribution and soil pH effects were also evaluated. Phosphate was more effective in transforming soil Pb (to 53%) from the non-residual to the residual phase than soil Zn (to 15%) and soil Cu (to 13%). This was because Pb was immobilized by P via formation of an insoluble pyromorphite-like mineral in the surface and subsurface of the soil, whereas no phosphate mineral Zn or Cu was identified. While P amendment enhanced metal uptake in the roots of St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), it significantly reduced metal translocation from root to shoot, especially Pb via formation of a pyromorphite-like mineral on the membrane surface of the root. A mixture of H3PO4 and phosphate rock was effective in metal immobilization, with less soil pH reduction and less soluble P. Although H3PO4 was effective in immobilizing Pb, its use should be limited to minimize soil pH reduction and potential eutrophication risk.  相似文献
