Oil spills occur commonly, and chemical compounds originating from oil spills are widespread in the aquatic environment. In order to monitor effects of a bunker oil spill on the aquatic environment, biomarker responses were measured in eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) sampled along a gradient in Göteborg harbor where the oil spill occurred and at a reference site, 2 weeks after the oil spill. Eelpout were also exposed to the bunker oil in a laboratory study to validate field data. The results show that eelpout from the Göteborg harbor are influenced by contaminants, especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), also during “normal” conditions. The bunker oil spill strongly enhanced the biomarker responses. Results show elevated ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities in all exposed sites, but, closest to the oil spill, the EROD activity was partly inhibited, possibly by PAHs. Elevated DNA adduct levels were also observed after the bunker oil spill. Chemical analyses of bile revealed high concentrations of PAH metabolites in the eelpout exposed to the oil, and the same PAH metabolite profile was evident both in eelpout sampled in the harbor and in the eelpout exposed to the bunker oil in the laboratory study.  相似文献

To implement policies about sustainable landscapes and rural development necessitates social learning about states and trends of sustainability indicators, norms that define sustainability, and adaptive multi-level governance. We evaluate the extent to which social learning at multiple governance levels for sustainable landscapes occur in 18 local development initiatives in the network of Sustainable Bergslagen in Sweden. We mapped activities over time, and interviewed key actors in the network about social learning. While activities resulted in exchange of experiences and some local solutions, a major challenge was to secure systematic social learning and make new knowledge explicit at multiple levels. None of the development initiatives used a systematic approach to secure social learning, and sustainability assessments were not made systematically. We discuss how social learning can be improved, and how a learning network of development initiatives could be realized.  相似文献

This special issue of AMBIO presents a new approach to sustainability science that goes beyond interdisciplinary research. Using coupled natural and human systems, or landscapes, as multiple case studies in Europe’s East and West knowledge production and learning toward transdisciplinary research was applied in Sweden, countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and Russia. First, the research group Forest-Landscape-Society summarizes the research program (2005–2012) behind this special issue of AMBIO and its development to participate in transdisciplinary research. Second, stakeholders at multiple levels provide their views on the new approach presented and reported.  相似文献

The goal of this work was to propose a novel method for the solid-phase extraction of the herbicides diquat (DQT2+) and difenzoquat (DFQT+) from aqueous medium using polymeric Amberlite XAD-2 and XAD-4 resins in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). The addition of SDS to the medium was of fundamental importance in order to allow the formation of a negatively charged surface able to sorb the cationic solutes. Several factors that could influence the sorption process, such as SDS concentration in the medium, sorbent mass, pH, ionic strength, and initial concentration of the solutes were investigated. Kinetic studies were also performed to model the system and to identify the mechanisms that operate the sorption process of the herbicides. SDS concentration in the medium presented remarkable influence on the extraction efficiency, achieving maximum values when the ratios [SDS]/[herbicide] were approximately 90, for XAD-2, and 22 and 11 for DQT2+ and DFQT+, respectively, for XAD-4. The sorption process followed a pseudo second-order kinetic in all cases studied. It was also found that an intraparticle diffusion process controlled exclusively the sorption of the herbicides by the Amberlite XAD-2 and XAD-4 resins in the first 15 min, becoming less active with time.  相似文献

A laboratory size spray dry scrubbing unit consisting of a spray dryer and a pulse Jet baghouse was used to study the effect of grinding recycle waste on SO2 removal across the spray dryer and on sorbent utilization. The equipment treats simulated flue gas with a dry flow rate of 1.5 m3 h?1 (stp) and utilizes an ultrasonic nozzle for atomization. The apparatus was initially tested over a broad range of operating conditions; a close agreement in SO2 removal was found with data from much larger units. The effect of grinding the FGD recycle material on the SO2 removal across the spray dryer was found to be great. Grinding the recycle material can enhance the SO2 removal efficiency to a level comparable to operation with a large excess of fresh lime.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the literature, different values of the distribution coefficient KH for HgCl2 between water and air are present in a range that spans more than 3 orders of magnitude. In order to determine if a waste incineration scrubber solution could become saturated with regard to HgCl2, an accurate experimental determination of the distribution constant of HgCl2 at elevated temperatures is needed. In this work, the coefficient has been determined at four different temperatures between 10 and 50 °C. The Arrhenius expression obtained is 5.5 x 105 x exp[-(8060 ± 2200)/7] with a corresponding enthalpy for the process HgCl2(aq)<» HgCl2(g) of 67 ± 20 kJ/mole. KH at 293 K was found to be ~5 x 10-7 atm M-1, which is in almost perfect agreement with an earlier study. Applying the obtained KH values to waste incineration scrubber conditions shows that no major saturation effect will occur.  相似文献

Monitoring of permafrost has been ongoing since 1978 in the Abisko area, northernmost Sweden, when measurements of active layer thickness started. In 1980, boreholes were drilled in three mires in the area to record permafrost temperatures. Recordings were made twice per year, and the last data were obtained in 2002. During the International Polar Year (2007–2008), new boreholes were drilled within the ‘Back to the Future’ (BTF) and ‘Thermal State of Permafrost’ (TSP) projects that enabled year-round temperature monitoring. Mean annual ground temperatures (MAGT) in the mires are close to 0°C, ranging from −0.16 to −0.47°C at 5 m depth. Data from the boreholes show increasing ground temperatures in the upper and lower part by 0.4 to 1°C between 1980 and 2002. At one mire, permafrost thickness has decreased from 15 m in 1980 to ca. 9 m in 2009, with an accelerating thawing trend during the last decade.  相似文献

Muramic acid (MA) is a unique amino sugar that is a constituent of the peptidoglycan (PG) present in prokaryotic cell walls. MA can serve as a marker for quantifying bacterial load, e.g. in indoor environments, by using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS). We demonstrated recently that the methyl ester O-methyl acetate (MMA) derivative can be used to detect MA in house dust by ion-trap GC-MS-MS. However, since the MMA derivative is not formed from free MA quantification was not optimal. Here we report 1) significant improvements in sample preparation of the MMA derivative and 2) an evaluation of the performance of derivative, using for comparison the alditol acetate derivative, the gold standard in quantitative trace analysis of MA in complex matrices. The MMA derivative was analysed using an MS instrument with internal ionization and the alditol acetate derivative was analysed using an instrument with external ionization. 13C-labelled cyanobacteria, containing MA in their PG, were used as the internal standard. A linear relationship was found between the two methods in studies on 27 parallel samples of airborne dust from school classes collected on filters. Although the analytical sensitivity of the MMA derivatives was somewhat slightly lower than of the alditol acetate derivative, this may be due to differences in yield of derivative, sample clean-up efficiency, or different performance of the GC columns or MS instruments. However preparation of the MMA derivative is quick and compatible with preparation of methyl esters of 3-hydroxy fatty acids (used as markers of Gram negative endotoxin) allowing the levels of both markers to be determined in the same dust sample. In conclusion, the MMA procedure can be used to determine MA in environmental samples with good reproducibility provided the concentration of the 13C-labelled MA internal standard in the cyanobacteria is first determined with an alternative method.  相似文献

The terrestrial chapter of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Programme (CBMP) has the potential to bring international multi-taxon, long-term monitoring together, but detailed fundamental species information for Arctic arthropods lags far behind that for vertebrates and plants. In this paper, we demonstrate this major challenge to the CBMP by focussing on spiders (Order: Araneae) as an example group. We collate available circumpolar data on the distribution of spiders and highlight the current monitoring opportunities and identify the key knowledge gaps to address before monitoring can become efficient. We found spider data to be more complete than data for other taxa, but still variable in quality and availability between Arctic regions, highlighting the need for greater international co-operation for baseline studies and data sharing. There is also a dearth of long-term datasets for spiders and other arthropod groups from which to assess status and trends of biodiversity. Therefore, baseline studies should be conducted at all monitoring stations and we make recommendations for the development of the CBMP in relation to terrestrial arthropods more generally.  相似文献
