The use of soluble PO43− as a heavy metal chemical stabilization agent was evaluated for a dust generated from melting or vitrification of municipal solid waste combustion residues. Vitrification dusts contain high concentrations of volatile elements such as Cl, Na, K, S, Pb, and Zn. These elements are present in the dusts largely as simple salts (e.g. PbCl2, ZnSO4) which are highly leachable. At an experimental dose of 0.4 moles of soluble PO43− per kg of residue, the pH-dependent leaching (pH 5,7,9) showed that the treatment was able to reduce equilibrium concentrations by factors of 3 to 100 for many metals; particularly Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Bulk and surface spectroscopies showed that the insoluble reaction products are tertiary metal phosphate [e.g. Zn3(PO4)2] and apatite [e.g. Pb5(PO4)3Cl] family minerals. Geochemical thermodynamic equilibrium modeling showed that apatite family and tertiary metal phosphate phases act as controlling solids for the equilibrium concentrations of Ca2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ in the leachates during pH-dependent leaching. Both end members and ideal solid solutions were seen to be controlling solids. Soluble phosphate effectively converted soluble metal salts into insoluble metal phosphate phases despite the relatively low doses and dry mixing conditions that were used. Soluble phosphate is an effective stabilization agent for divalent heavy metals in melting dusts where leachable metals are present in high concentrations.  相似文献

This research examined the temporal distribution of turbulent structure near a streambank toe through the progression of a flood wave in West Run (Morgantown, WV, USA). Three-dimensional velocities and water depths were measured through a 17-h flood event. Turbulence characteristics were examined: Reynolds stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulence intensities. On average, near-boundary velocity during the rising stage was less than the falling stage, likely due to the measurement location and local roughness. The velocity vectors shifted from towards bed before the flood wave to toward the streambank during progression of the flood wave. Turbulent kinetic energy increased with increasing water depth during the rising stage. Reynolds stress, τxz, increased with increasing water depth during the rising stage, but the majority of the stresses were negative through the storm event. Reynolds stress, τxy, was positive throughout the event and did not vary with depth. This work is among the first to evaluate turbulence during depth-varying flows in the field.  相似文献

In 2000, Florida's fast-growing hard clam aquaculture industry became eligible for federal agricultural crop insurance through the US Department of Agriculture, but the responsibility for identifying the cause of mortality remained with the grower. Here we describe the continuous water quality monitoring system used to monitor hard clam aquaculture areas in Florida and show examples of the data collected with the system. Systems recording temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, water depth, turbidity and chlorophyll at 30 min intervals were installed at 10 aquaculture lease areas along Florida's Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Six of these systems sent data in real-time to a public website, and all 10 systems provided data for web-accessible archives. The systems documented environmental conditions that could negatively impact clam survival and productivity and identified biologically relevant water quality differences among clam aquaculture areas. Both the real-time and archived data were used widely by clam growers and nursery managers to make management decisions and in filing crop loss insurance claims. While the systems were labor and time intensive, we recommend adjustments that could reduce costs and staff time requirements.  相似文献

The onset of electrical breakdown in dust layers has been studied for hand-deposited dust layers in a parallel plate geometry. It was found that the breakdown was an ordinary electron avalanche process originating in voids within the dust layer and obeying Paschen’s Law. The size of voids where breakdown occurs was in the range of 10 to 20 μm for the layers used. The distribution of particle sizes in a sample Influences its breakdown through changes in the average void dimension where breakdown takes place. Water vapor in the test environment, which affects the electrical conduction mechanism prior to breakdown, lowered the average electric field required to initiate breakdown. Moderate compaction of the sample had little or no effect on its breakdown behavior.  相似文献

This paper describes the evaluation of the performance of ESPs operating downstream of spray dryers in high- and medium-sulfur coal flue gas streams. Tests were conducted at the TV A10 MW Spray Dryer/ESP Pilot Plant and the EPRI High Sulfur Test Center. The results of the analysis of particle characteristics, spray dryer operating parameters, and ESP operating variables identify the occurrence of severe particle reentrainment due to the low resistivity (108 ohm-cm and lower) of the sorbent/flyash mixtures at low approach-tosaturation temperatures. The reentrainment has a significant impact on the collection efficiency of ESPs which could represent a fundamental limitation on their ability to adequately perform in this environment. Although this program has been focused on spray dryer applications, because of the similarities of the gas and particle characteristics produced from spray drying and other dry scrubbing processes, the results also have implications to duct slurry injection, dry sorbent injection with humidification, and processes involving furnace sorbent injection with humidification.

The performance characteristics of the ESPs are presented under both baseline and spray dryer conditions. The results are analyzed and the Southern Research Institute ESP Computer Model was used to evaluate the data. Special techniques for measuring particle resistivity at these conditions are described. A theoretical examination of particle reentrainment was undertaken which indicated that at low-resistivity levels the electrostatic forces reverse and tend to pull the particles off the plates with a force proportional to the square of the electric field. This repulsion of particles from the plates at spray dryer conditions was confirmed by laboratory experiments. Chloride content of the coal was found to be an important parameter effecting the performance of the ESP. Implications of the results of this evaluation relative to ESP upgrades are presented.  相似文献

An integrated theory is developed to describe the steadystate operation of a suspended-growth bioscrubber for the control of biodegradable, volatile organic gases. The bioscrubber consists of an N-stage absorber and an oxidation reactor. A biomass slurry is circulated between the absorber and the oxidation reactor, t he pollutant is absorbed and partially oxidized in the absorber. Oxidation is completed in the oxidation reactor. Predictions of the theory show that the removal efficiency is a function of Henry's Law constant for the pollutant, the ratio of the liquid flow rate to the gas flow rate, and the number of stages. Since high efficiencies can be achieved for soluble, biodegradable, volatile organic compounds, such systems have the potential to be a low-cost control method.  相似文献

The Athabasca Oil Sands are one of four natural oil sands deposits in Northern Alberta, Canada. As a number of new mines are planned in the area, there is a need to establish background levels of natural hydrocarbon release prior to these developments. To this end, various environmental samples were taken from selected tributaries in the oil sands region of the Athabasca River Basin and analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their alkylated analogues. Samples were collected over 3 years (1998-2000) to provide an increased understanding of the spatial distribution, nature and extent of natural hydrocarbon release to the environment. Results indicated that levels of total PAHs were elevated in the tributaries (up to 34.7 µg/g) compared to the main stem Athabasca River (<2 µg/g). As expected, samples from the oil sands deposits contained the greatest amounts of PAHs and alkylated PAHs. Profiles of the alkylated PAM distributions were very similar, indicating that all the samples tested were from a common petrogenic source.  相似文献
