Benzene is a volatile organic compound known to be carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) and may be present in food. In the present study, 455 food samples from the Belgian market were analyzed for benzene contents and some possible sources of its occurrence in the foodstuffs were evaluated. Benzene was found above the level of detection in 58% of analyzed samples with the highest contents found in processed foods such as smoked and canned fish, and foods which contained these as ingredients (up to 76.21 μg kg−1). Unprocessed foods such as raw meat, fish, and eggs contained much lower concentrations of benzene. Using the benzene concentrations in food, a quantitative dietary exposure assessment of benzene intake was conducted on a national representative sample of the Belgian population over 15 years of age. The mean benzene intake for all foods was 0.020 μg kg bw d−1 according to a probabilistic analysis. These values are below the minimum risk level for oral chronic exposure to benzene (0.5 μg kg bw d−1). 相似文献

Objective
To determine screening performance of maternal, fetal and placental characteristics for selecting pregnancies at risk of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia in a low-risk multi-ethnic population.Method
In a prospective population-based cohort among 7124 pregnant women, we collected maternal characteristics including body mass index, ethnicity, parity, smoking and blood pressure in early-pregnancy. Fetal characteristics included second and third trimester estimated fetal weight and sex determined by ultrasound. Placental characteristics included first and second trimester placental growth factor concentrations and second and third trimester uterine artery resistance indices. Results
Maternal characteristics provided the best screening result for gestational hypertension (area-under-the-curve [AUC] 0.79 [95% Confidence interval {CI} 0.76-0.81]) with 40% sensitivity at 90% specificity. For preeclampsia, the maternal characteristics model led to a screening performance of AUC 0.74 (95% CI 0.70-0.78) with 33% sensitivity at 90% specificity. Addition of second and third trimester placental ultrasound characteristics only improved screening performance for preeclampsia (AUC 0.78 [95% CI 0.75-0.82], with 48% sensitivity at 90% specificity). Conclusion
Routinely measured maternal characteristics, known at the start of pregnancy, can be used in screening for pregnancies at risk of gestational hypertension or preeclampsia within a low-risk multi-ethnic population. Addition of combined second and third trimester placental ultrasound characteristics only improved screening for preeclampsia.16.

Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) were found to differ in the ability to metabolize polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Biomagnification factors (BMFs), calculated between both predators and their prey (sole - Solea solea and whiting - Merlangius merlangus), had a large range of variation (between 0.5 and 91 for PCBs and between 0.6 and 53 for PBDEs). For the higher chlorinated PCBs and the highest brominated PBDEs, the BMF values in adult males were significantly higher than in the juvenile individuals of both species. BMF values of hexa- to octa-PCBs were the highest, suggesting reduced ability to degrade these congeners. Harbour porpoises had higher BMFs for lower chlorinated PCBs and for all PBDEs compared to harbour seals. Other factors, which may influence biomagnification, such as the octanol-water partition coefficients and the trophic level position measured through stable isotope (δ15N) analysis, were found to be of lesser importance to predict biomagnification in the studied food chain. 相似文献

Dioxin-like activity was measured in the serum of 1425 Flemish men and women via the CALUX assay. The adults, aged between 50 and 65 years, participated in a large biomonitoring program, executed by the Flemish Center of Expertise for Environment and Health between 2002 and 2006. Within the context of this biomonitoring program also dietary intake of dioxin-like contaminants was assessed through a food frequency questionnaire. The relation between the estimated dietary intake and the dioxin-like activity in serum was evaluated using multivariate analyses: a logistic model was performed on the total population, while a linear regression analysis was done on the subsample with quantifiable dioxin activity levels in serum. Region, gender, age, BMI, smoking status, as well as dietary habits were entered in the model, with dioxin level as an outcome estimate. Both the logistic and linear model confirmed the contribution of dietary intake to the dioxin activity measured in serum. Also BMI and region were found to be associated with dioxin activity levels. 相似文献

The engineering, construction, performance and running costs of a catalytic flue gas cleaning component in the low dust area of a municipal waste incinerator is discussed. For this purpose, the case study of a Flemish incineration plant is presented, covering the history, the design procedure of the catalyst, relevant process data and the financial aspects. A reliable PCDD/F-destruction by means of oxidation by the catalyst to typical values of 0.001 ng TEQ/Nm3 has been demonstrated. At the same time, NO(chi)- and CO-emissions are reduced by 90% and 20% to about 50 mg/N m3 andbelow 10 mg/N m3, respectively. 相似文献

Potentially Allergenic Airborne Particles in the Vicinity of a Yeast and Penicillin Production Plant
Liesbeth Preller Albert Hollander Dick Heederik Bert Brunekreef 《Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (1995)》2013,63(8):1094-1097
Potential health risks of exposure to emissions of a yeast and penicillin production plant were investigated by measuring viable particles and protein contents of particles in ambient air. The results showed a clear decrease of the downwind number of yeast colonyforming units with increasing distance from the source. Upwind the number of yeast colony-forming units was zero. Identification showed that nearly all yeast were of the species Saccharomlces cerevisiae. Such a trend could not be found for the total number of colony-forming units (yeasts, molds, and bacteria) although the upwind concentration was slightly lower than the downwind concentration. The downwind protein concentration was significantly elevated compared to the upwind concentration. 相似文献
