In order to evaluate the impact of atmospheric pollutants emitted by the industrial settlement of Milazzo (Italy) on agriculture,
sulphur dioxide and ozone levels in air were monitored and the data were used to estimate yield losses of the most widespread
cultures. Trace element concentrations in crops and soils were also detected and metabolic profiles of soil microbial communities
were considered. Vibrio fischeri test was used to appraise airborne pollutant ecotoxicity and epidemiological studies on causes of death distribution were
carried out to characterize health state of people living in the area. All the sampling points were selected in farms on the
basis of a theoretical meteo-diffusive model of industrial air pollutants. Experimental SO2 and O3 values mainly exceeded the threshold established by Italian and EU regulations to protect vegetation and they correspond
to estimated significant crop losses. Conversely toxic element residues in soils and in agroalimentary products were generally
lower than the fixed values. SO2 and O3 concentrations, toxic element contents and ecotoxicity levels of airborne pollutants were not related only to industrial
site emissions, while the fluctuations on metabolic profiles of soil microbial communities seem to agree with the predicted
deposition of xenobiotic compounds from the industrial plants. The epidemiological study evidenced a better health state of
populations living in the investigated area than in the Messina province and the Sicily region but, inside the area, males
living in the municipalities closest to the industrial settlement exhibited a worst health state than those in the very far

For the purpose of understanding the transport and deposition mechanisms and the air–water distribution of some volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHCs), their atmosphere/aquatic environment concentration ratio was evaluated. In addition, for the purpose of differentiating VCHC behaviour in a temperate climate from its behaviour in a polar climate, the atmosphere/aquatic environment concentration ratio evaluated in matrices from temperate zones was compared with the concentration ratio evaluated in Antarctic matrices.In order to perform air samplings also at rigid Antarctic temperatures, the sampling apparatus, consisting of a diaphragm pump and canisters, was suitably modified.Chloroform, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, tetrachloromethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene were measured in air, water and snow using specific techniques composed of a purpose-made cryofocusing-trap-injector (for air samples) and a modified purge-and-trap injector (for aqueous samples) coupled to a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometric detection operating in selected ion monitoring mode. The VCHCs were retrieved in all the investigated matrices, both Italian and Antarctic, with concentrations varying from tens to thousands of ng m−3 in air and from digits to hundreds of ng kg−1 in water and snow.The atmosphere/aquatic environment concentration ratios were always found to be lower than 1. In particular, the Italian air/water concentration ratios were smaller than the Antarctic ones, by reason of the higher atmospheric photochemical activity in temperate zones. On the other hand, the Antarctic air/snow concentration ratios proved to be largely in favour of snow with respect to the Italian ratios, thus corroborating the hypothesis of a more efficient VCHC deposition mechanism and accumulation on Antarctic snow. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background One of the burning problems of our industrial society is the high consumption of water and the high demand for clean drinking
water. Numerous approaches have been taken to reduce water consumption, but in the long run it seems only possible to recycle
waste water into high quality water. It seems timely to discuss alternative water remediation technologies that are fit for
industrial as well as less developed countries to ensure a high quality of drinking water throughout Europe.
Main Features The present paper discusses a range of phytoremediation technologies to be applied in a modular approach to integrate and
improve the performance of existing wastewater treatment, especially towards the emerging micro pollutants, i.e. organic chemicals
and pharmaceuticals. This topic is of global relevance for the EU.
Results Existing technologies for waste water treatment do not sufficiently address increasing pollution situation, especially with
the growing use of organic pollutants in the private household and health sector. Although some crude chemical approaches
exist, such as advanced oxidation steps, most waste water treatment plants will not be able to adopt them. The same is true
for membrane technologies.
Discussion Incredible progress has been made during recent years, thus providing us with membranes of longevity and stability and, at
the same time, high filtration capacity. However, these systems are expensive and delicate in operation, so that the majority
of communities will not be able to afford them. Combinations of different phytoremediation technologies seem to be most promising
to solve this burning problem.
Conclusions To quantify the occurrence and the distribution of micropollutants, to evaluate their effects, and to prevent them from passing
through wastewater collection and treatment systems into rivers, lakes and ground water bodies represents an urgent task for
applied environmental sciences in the coming years.
Recommendations Public acceptance of green technologies is generally higher than that of industrial processes. The EU should stimulate research
to upgrade existing waste water treatment by implementing phytoremediation modules and demonstrating their reliability to

Vegetation plays an important role in influencing the air/surface exchange of semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs). In order to predict the capability of different plant species to capture chemicals from the air, plant-air partition coefficients and kinetic accumulation parameters must be defined. In this study, potted plants of three different species were transferred to the vicinity of a source point for DDT, namely a contaminated area around a former production plant in Italy. Leaves were constantly sampled in order to follow the uptake from air over time. Later, the potted plants were transported to a location characterized by background diffuse air concentrations for the release phase. Coupling the experimental results with a two-compartment accumulation model it was possible to derive the kinetics parameters and the plant-air partition coefficient K(PA) for p,p'-DDT. The logK(PA) (on a mass/volume basis) ranged between 1.7 and 2.2 for the different species. The uncertainties related to the different phenomena involved in a field uptake/release experiment are discussed. 相似文献

The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) is frequently used for the numerical solution of a wide variety of electromagnetic (EM) problems and, among them, those concerning human exposure to EM fields. In many practical cases related to the assessment of occupational EM exposure, large simulation domains are modeled and high space resolution adopted, so that strong memory and central processing unit power requirements have to be satisfied. To better afford the computational effort, the use of parallel computing is a winning approach; alternatively, subgridding techniques are often implemented. However, the simultaneous use of subgridding schemes and parallel algorithms is very new. In this paper, an easy-to-implement and highly-efficient parallel graded-mesh (GM) FDTD scheme is proposed and applied to human–antenna interaction problems, demonstrating its appropriateness in dealing with complex occupational tasks and showing its capability to guarantee the advantages of a traditional subgridding technique without affecting the parallel FDTD performance. 相似文献

A new urban parameterization for a fast-running dispersion prediction modeling system suitable for emergency response situations is introduced. The parameterization represents the urban convective boundary layer in the dispersion prediction system developed by the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The performance of the modeling system is tested with data collected during the field campaign Joint Urban 2003 (JU03), held in July 2003 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Tests were performed using data from three intense operating periods held during daytime slightly unstable to unstable conditions. The system was run in operational mode using the meteorological data that would be available operationally at NARAC to test its effectiveness in emergency response conditions. The new parameterization considerably improves the performance of the original modeling system, by producing a better degree of pattern of correspondence between predictions and observations (as measured by Taylor diagrams), considerably reducing bias, and better capturing directional effects resulting in plume predictions whose shape and size better resemble the observations (via the measure of effectiveness). Furthermore, the new parameterization shows similar skills to urban modeling systems of similar or greater complexity. The parameterization performs the best at the three JU03 sensor arcs (1, 2, and 4 km downwind the release points), with fractional bias values ranging from 0.13 to 0.4, correlation values from 0.45 to 0.71, and centered root-mean-square error being reduced more than 50% in most cases. The urban parameterization has been tested with grid increments of 125, 250, 500 and 1000 m, performing best at 250 and 500 m. Finally, it has been found that representing the point source by a Gaussian distribution with an initial spread of particles leads to a better representation of the initial spread induced by near-source buildings, resulting in lower bias and improved correlation in downtown Oklahoma City. 相似文献

The current research is aimed at investigating the explosion behavior of hazardous materials in relation to aspects of particulate size. The materials of study are flocculent (fibrous) polyamide 6.6 (nylon) and polyester (polyethylene terephthalate). These materials may be termed nontraditional dusts due to their cylindrical shape which necessitates consideration of both particle diameter and length. The experimental work undertaken is divided into two main parts. The first deals with the determination of deflagration parameters for polyamide 6.6 (dtex 3.3) for different lengths: 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.75 mm, 0.9 mm and 1 mm; the second involves a study of the deflagration behavior of polyester and polyamide 6.6 samples, each having a length of 0.5 mm and two different values of dtex, namely 1.7 and 3.3. (Dtex or decitex is a unit of measure for the linear density of fibers. It is equivalent to the mass in grams per 10,000 m of a single filament, and can be converted to a particle diameter.) The explosibility parameters investigated for both flocculent materials include maximum explosion pressure (Pmax), size-normalized maximum rate of pressure rise (KSt), minimum explosible concentration (MEC), minimum ignition energy (MIE) and minimum ignition temperature (MIT). ASTM protocols were followed using standard dust explosibility test equipment (Siwek 20-L explosion chamber, MIKE 3 apparatus and BAM oven). Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were undertaken as indicated by the following examples. Qualitative observation of the post-explosion residue for polyamide 6.6 indicated a complex interwoven structure, whereas the polyester residue showed a shiny, melt-type appearance. Quantitatively, the highest values of Pmax and KSt were obtained at the shortest length and finest dtex for a given material. For a given length, polyester displayed a greater difference in Pmax and KSt at different values of dtex than polyamide 6.6. Long ignition delay times were observed in the BAM oven (MIT measurements) for polyester, and video framing of explosions in the MIKE 3 apparatus (MIE measurements) enabled observation of secondary ignitions caused by flame propagation after the initial ignition occurring at the spark electrodes. 相似文献

Climate change modelers predict increasingly frequent "extreme events," so it is critical to quantify whether organismal responses (such as reproductive output) measured over the range of usual climatic conditions can predict responses under more extreme conditions. In a 20-year field study on water pythons (Liasis fuscus), we quantified the effects of climatically driven annual variation in food supply on demographic traits of female pythons (feeding rate, body size, body mass, and reproductive output). Reaction norms linking food supply to feeding rates and residual body mass were broadly linear, whereas norms linking food supply to female body size became curvilinear when a dramatic (flooding-induced) famine reduced the mean body size at sexual maturity. This study involved an evaluation of the potential for bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) in the effluent from a large municipal wastewater treatment plant. It was focused on the presence of PCBs in two types of effluents: the continuous effluent present during dry weather conditions and the intermittently present effluent that was present during wet weather due to incoming stormwater. The annual discharge of PCBs for both types of effluent was calculated based on a five-year dataset(2011–2015). In addition, the toxicity and bioremediation potential of the PCBs in the effluent were also assessed. It was found that the continuous effluent was responsible for the majority of the discharged PCB into the receiving river(1821 g for five years), while the intermittent effluent contributed 260 g over the five years.The average number of chlorine per biphenyl for the detected PCB congeners showed a 19%difference between the two types of effluent, which indicated a potential for organohalide respiration of PCBs during the continuous treatment. This was further supported by a high level of tri-, tetra-and penta-chlorinated congeners accounting for 75% of the anaerobically respired PCBs. Potential for aerobic degradation and thus biomineralization of PCBs was identified for both effluents. Furthermore, toxicity of 12 dioxin-like PCBs showed that normal operation of the wastewater reduced the toxicity throughout the wastewater treatment plant. 相似文献

Unexplained stillbirth is defined as a stillbirth with no known cause after the exclusion of common causes, including obstetric complications, infections, placental insufficiency or abruption, umbilical cord complications, and congenital abnormalities with or without known genetic cause. More than 60% of stillbirth cases remain unexplained. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the known genetic causes of unexplained stillbirth cases and to evaluate the current position and future directions for the use of genetic and genomic testing in expanding the knowledge in this field. A systematic search through several databases was performed using the keywords genetics and stillbirths in humans. Different methods to detect various types of causal genetic aberrations have been used in the past decades, from standard karyotyping to novel methods such as chromosomal microarray analysis and next generation sequencing technologies. Apart from common chromosomal aneuploidies, a promising hypothesis about genetic causes included genes related to cardiomyopathies and channelopathies. However, these were tested in the research settings, since molecular karyotyping is currently the standard approach in the routine evaluation of genetic causes of stillbirth. Hereby, we provide evidence that expanding knowledge using novel genetic and genomic testing might uncover new genetic causes of unexplained stillbirth. 相似文献
