Livestock production is very risky due to climate variability in semi-arid Sub-Saharan Africa. Using data collected from 400 households in the Borena zone of the Oromia Region, we explored what drives adoption of agricultural practices that can decrease the vulnerability of agro-pastoralists to climate change. Households with more adaptive capacity adopted a larger number of practices. The households’ adaptive capacity was stronger when the quality of local institutions was high. However, adaptive capacity had less explanatory power in explaining adoption of adaptation options than household socio-economic characteristics, suggesting that aggregating information into one indicator of adaptive capacity for site-specific studies may not help to explain the adoption behaviour of households. Strong local institutions lead to changes in key household-level characteristics (like membership to community groups, years lived in a village, access to credit, financial savings and crop income) which positively affect adoption of agricultural practices. In addition, better local institutions were also positively related to adoption of livestock-related adaptation practices. Poor access to a tarmac road was positively related to intensification and diversification of crop production, whereas it was negatively related to the intensification of livestock production, an important activity for generating cash in the region. Our findings suggest that better local institutions lead to changes in household characteristics, which positively affect adoption of adaptation practices, suggesting that policies should aim to strengthen local institutions. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Recently developed models and data describing the interactions of gas-phase semi-volatile organic compounds with indoor surfaces are employed to examine the effects of sorption on nicotine's suitability as an environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) marker. Using parameters from our studies of nicotine sorption on carpet, painted wallboard, and stainless steel and previously published data on ETS particle deposition, the dynamic behavior of nicotine was modeled in two different indoor environments: a house and a stainless steel chamber. The results show that apparently contradictory observations of nicotine's behavior in indoor air can be understood by considering the effects of sorption under different experimental conditions. In indoor environments in which smoking has occurred regularly for an extended period, the sorbed mass of nicotine is very large relative to the mass emitted by a single cigarette. The importance of nicotine adsorption relative to ventilation as a gas-phase removal mechanism is reduced. Where smoking occurs less regularly or the indoor surfaces are cleaned prior to smoking (as in a laboratory chamber), nicotine deposition is more significant. Nicotine concentrations closely track the levels of other ETS constituents in environments with habitual smoking if the data are averaged over a period significantly longer than the period between cigarette combustion episodes. However, nicotine is not a suitable tracer for predicting ETS exposures at fine time scales or in settings where smoking occurs infrequently and irregularly. 相似文献

Thoracic (PM10), fine thoracic (PM2.5) and sub-micrometer (PM1) airborne particulate matter was sampled during day and night. In total, about 100 indoor and outdoor samples were collected for each fraction at ten different office environments. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and ion chromatography were applied for the quantification of some major and minor elements and ions in the collected aerosols. During daytime, mass concentrations were in the ranges: 11–29, 8.1–24, and 6.6–18 μg m?3, with averages of 20 ± 1, 15.0 ± 0.9, and 11.0 ± 0.8 μg m?3, respectively. At night, mass concentrations were found to be significantly lower for all fractions. Indoor PM1 concentrations exceeded the corresponding outdoor levels during office hours and were thought to be elevated by office printers. Particles with diameters between 1 and 2.5 μm and 2.5 and 10 μm were mainly associated with soil dust elements and were clearly subjected to distinct periods of settling/resuspension. Indoor NO3? levels were found to follow specific microclimatic conditions at the office environments, while daytime levels of sub-micrometer Cl? were possibly elevated by the use of Cl-containing cleaning products. This paper characterizes the emission rates of size fractionated particulate matter, inorganic aerosols, acid gases, ammonia and methane measured over four flocks at a commercial broiler chicken facility. Mean emission rates of each pollutant, along with sampling notes, were reported in this paper, the first in a series of two. Sampling notes were needed because inherent gaps in data may bias the mean emission rates.The mean emission rates of PM10 and PM2.5 were 5.0 and 0.78 g day?1 [Animal Unit, AU]?1, respectively, while inorganic aerosols mean emission rates ranged from 0.15 to 0.46 g day?1 AU?1 depending on the season. The average total acid gas emission rate was 0.43 g day?1 AU?1 with the greatest contribution from nitrous and nitric acids and little contribution from sulfuric acid (as SO2).Ammonia emissions were seasonally dependent, with a mean emission rate of 66.0 g day?1 AU?1 in the cooler seasons and 94.5 g day?1 AU?1 during the warmer seasons. Methane emissions were relatively consistent with a mean emission rate of 208 g day?1 AU?1.The diurnal pattern in each pollutant’s emission rate was relatively consistent after normalizing the hourly emissions according to each daily mean emission rate. Over the duration of a production cycle, all the measured pollutants’ emissions increased proportionally to the total live mass of birds in the house, with the exception of ammonia.Interrelationships between pollutants provide evidence of mutually dependent release mechanisms, which suggests that it may be possible to fill data gaps with minimal data requirements. The environmental attitudes of young people are a growing topic of interest for social scientists. Most research that aims
to explain differences in (youth) environmental attitudes focuses on the individual as the level of measurement. There is,
however, a growing body of evidence that illustrates that the context within which that individual operates can contribute
to their environmental attitudes. Based on the PISA 2006 data, and while controlling for individual characteristics, we tested
Inglehart’s ‘objective problems, subjective values’ hypothesis. This hypothesis divides the contextual influences on environmental
attitudes into (1) objective problems in the individual’s natural environment and (2) subjective values linked to post-materialistic
goals in life. We analyzed both the individual and the country level simultaneously, controlling for compositional effects,
by performing a multilevel analysis on the 2006 PISA data for youth environmental attitudes (398,750 15 year olds from 56
countries). At the individual level, the results are generally consistent with the literature; at the contextual level, the
stage of development of a country (as a proxy for post-materialistic values) is shown to be unrelated to environmental attitudes.
Both natural riches of a country and its environmental problems are shown to positively influence the environmental attitudes
of that country’s youth. These results are discussed in relation to the ‘objective problems, subjective values’ hypothesis.
The results also point towards the necessity of simultaneously assessing the effect of individual- and contextual-level characteristics

This study carried out a contingent ranking experiment to study how smallholder irrigators in South Africa would value potential changes in water rights. Three specific dimensions of water rights, relevant for the South African case, are considered: duration, quality of title, and transferability. Results indicate that smallholder irrigators are prepared to pay considerably higher water prices if improvements are made in the water rights system. This implies that the proposed interventions in the water rights system would improve the efficiency and productivity of the small-scale irrigation sector. The increased willingness to pay could furthermore also assist the South African government to reach the objective of increased cost recovery. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate tebuconazole sorption on common soil minerals (birnessite, ferrihydrite, goethite, calcite and illite) and humic acids (representing soil organic matter). Tebuconazole was used (i) in the commercial form Horizon 250 EW and (ii) as an analytical grade pure chemical. In the experiment with the commercially available tebuconazole, a significant pH-dependent sorption onto the oxides was observed (decreasing sorption with increasing pH). The highest sorption was found for ferrihydrite due to its high specific surface area, followed by humic acids, birnessite, goethite and illite. No detectable sorption was found for calcite. The sorption of analytical grade tebuconazole on all selected minerals was significantly lower compared to the commercial product. The sorption was the highest for humic acids, followed by ferrihydrite and illite and almost negligible for goethite and birnessite without any pH dependence. Again, no sorption was observed for calcite. The differences in sorption of the commercially available and analytical grade tebuconazole can be attributed to the additives (e.g., solvents) present in the commercial product. This work proved the importance of soil mineralogy and composition of the commercially available pesticides on the behavior of tebuconazole in soils. 相似文献

Little research has been done so far into the environmental fate and side effects of pesticides in the tropics. In addition, those studies conducted in tropical regions have focused almost exclusively on single species laboratory tests. Hence, fate and effects of pesticides on higher-tier levels have barely been studied under tropical conditions. To address this lack of knowledge, four outdoor aquatic model ecosystem experiments using two different test systems were conducted in Thailand evaluating the insecticide chlorpyrifos, the herbicide linuron and the fungicide carbendazim. Results of these experiments and comparisons of recorded fate and effects with temperate studies have been published previously. The present paper discusses the pros and cons of the methodologies applied and provides indications for i) possible improvements; ii) important aspects that should be considered when performing model ecosystem experiments in the tropics; iii) future research. 相似文献
